How the founder of an ‘orgasmic meditation' startup ended up on trial
She was once hailed by Gwyneth Paltrow as a 'magnetic' sex guru who held the key to female pleasure. But after a damaging 2022 Netflix documentary and an FBI investigation, Nicole Daedone, a proponent of 'orgasmic meditation' and the founder of orgasm company OneTaste, is on trial with her former head of sales Rachel Cherwitz after being indicted on a charge of running a conspiracy involving forced labour.
It's an extraordinary fall from grace. Just a few years ago, Paltrow was enthusiastically interviewing Daedone, 58, on her Goop podcast, while Khloé Kardashian chose Daedone's book Slow Sex: The Art and Craft of the Female Orgasm for her book club, saying: 'Orgasmic meditation is the key to ultimate satisfaction.'
The practice involves female participants removing all clothing from the waist down and then having their clitoris manually stimulated by another person (often male) to induce sexual pleasure.
But many of those involved with OneTaste are now viewing their experiences in a very different light, claiming that their vulnerability was exploited and that they were pressured into going too far. Is this simply regret reframed as accusation, or the emerging dark side of the powerful cult of wellness?
OneTaste has a vivid if nebulous origin story. In her 2011 TEDx talk, Daedone shared how in 1998 she had met a man at a party who practised 'contemplative sexuality'. Daedone has since been hazy on said man's identity – she's described him variously as a monk, a Buddhist, or just a 'cute guy' – but she did explain in frank detail what they did together.
Daedone lay down naked while the man shone a torch on her vagina and described the colours; her labia, apparently, were 'coral'. He proceeded to stroke her clitoris in a manner, she said, 'no firmer than you would stroke your eyelid,' and her response was life-changing. 'I just broke open, and the feeling was pure and clean.' Daedone then had her moment of revelation: 'Female orgasm is vital for every single woman on the planet.'
And female orgasm has been a long-standing interest of Daedone's. She had previously been part of The Welcomed Consensus, a group specialising in female orgasm (along with friendship, sensuality and communal living). One member claimed she could sustain an orgasm for three hours, 'not including cigarette breaks'.
In 2004, Daedone founded company OneTaste with coach and author Robert Kandell in order to share the practice, which she branded 'orgasmic meditation' (or OM, pronounced 'ohm'), with the masses. Their first base was a loft in San Francisco, and they quickly attracted 50 regulars, in their 20s and 30s, who took part in communal OM workshops.
Those ritualistic sessions involved a woman lying on pillows (a 'nest' in Daedone's winsome lingo) with her legs bowed open (or 'butterflied'), naked from the waist down. Her fully clothed partner would don latex gloves, apply lubricant, and stroke her clitoris. The aim was to reach a satisfactory conclusion within 15 minutes: Daedone would set a clock timer.
Over the next decade, OneTaste expanded its operations, setting up retreat centres in New York, Las Vegas and, in 2014, London, branded as TurnOn Britain. On the company's website, Daedone claims that at its peak it had 35,000 customers worldwide. Around 400 of those lived full time in the centres, renting rooms and working as dedicated staff who sold and delivered courses for OneTaste.
But despite Daedone's rhetoric, this was not a philanthropic effort. According to a 2018 report in Bloomberg Businessweek, an introductory workshop cost $199 (£151), a weekend course $499 (£378), a retreat $4,000 (£3,000), and an annual subscription giving you access to all the courses was a whopping $60,000 (£45,000). If you wanted full training to become a certified coach, that set you back $16,000 (£12,000).
Daedone published her book Slow Sex in 2012, comparing her philosophy to the Slow Food movement. OneTaste also sold everything from branded lubricant and pillows to instructional DVDs.
It certainly didn't hurt that the chic wellness movement was skyrocketing. The New York Times put Daedone, a glossy advocate, on the cover of its style section in 2009. She also used trendy therapy speak, inviting women to 'sit in their power', and presented her practice as spiritual enlightenment and connection rather than sex. In her TEDx talk, which racked up more than two million views, Daedone spoke about the western woman's crisis: 'I work too hard, I eat too much, I diet too much, I drink too much, I shop too much, I give too much – and still there's this sense of hunger that I can't touch.'
It was a well-crafted narrative; by 2017, OneTaste had an annual revenue of $12 million (£9 million), bases in nine cities and 150 employees. Then Hollywood came calling. In 2018, Gwyneth Paltrow invited Daedone on to her Goop podcast, telling her followers that Daedone's practice was 'the yoga of sex' – the ideal sales pitch for the wellness age.
According to Bloomberg, staffers looking for new clients were encouraged to target young, beautiful women and awkward but well-moneyed tech bros, and to grab their attention with openers such as: 'How's your orgasm?' Former OneTaste lead instructor Ken Blackman noted that Silicon Valley was the ideal original market, since it could frame OM as 'a new operating system for human connection'.
Former staffers told Bloomberg they played ice-breaker games at the start of OneTaste workshops that prompted participants to share vulnerable stories about their anxiety, loneliness or sexual trauma; staff took notes so they could hone future sales pitches for similarly troubled clients. OneTaste has denied this characterisation.
Daedone herself had a turbulent childhood. Growing up in California with a single mother, she got pregnant accidentally aged 16 and had an abortion. In 1994, aged 27, she made the horrifying discovery that her birth father was dying in prison after being convicted of molesting two girls. At that point, she said, 'Everything in my reality just collapsed.' It was then that she began her spiritual studies.
For OneTaste sales director Rachel Cherwitz, she had been diagnosed as anorgasmic (unable to achieve orgasm), and was recommended the company by her yoga teacher. She said that OM 'spoke to me in a pretty deep way'.
But whether or not Daedone and Cherwitz's motives were originally pure, OneTaste became a formidable business empire. Former staffers have said they were terrified of Cherwitz's daunting goals. Ahead of events where staff were expected to recruit new customers, she would allegedly motivate her team by showing them a YouTube video of lions hunting in a pack. Staffers reportedly used porn movie terminology, referring to themselves as 'fluffers' (someone employed on porn sets to keep the male performer erect). One told Bloomberg: 'You fluff someone to get them energetically and emotionally hard. You were the dangled bait, like, 'You can have more of this if you buy this $10,000 course.''
Clients were allegedly encouraged to take out multiple credit cards so they could pay for more and more courses. Former director of reach Joanna Van Vleck said in 2018, 'We took money from people that we shouldn't have,' and added that the company had revised its policies.
But it wasn't just participants shelling out thousands. Ruwan Meepagala worked for OneTaste for two years and left with $30,000 in credit card debt. When he complained about not getting paid, he said he was accused of having a 'scarcity mindset'. Other staffers reported being forced to work for free after getting into debt with the company, comparing it with a pyramid scheme.
Hamza Tayeb was drawn right into the centre of OneTaste, even marrying Cherwitz. He recalled taking part in an event called Magic School in 2015 involving ceremonial piercing and dancers holding snakes. Daedone bestowed the title of 'priests and priestesses of orgasm' upon a chosen few, including Tayeb. Another former staffer said: 'It was a religion. Orgasm was God, and Nicole was like Jesus.'
In 2018, after Bloomberg's damning report, OneTaste shut down its offices and retreats, pivoting to online education instead. In 2022, it rebranded as The Institute of OM.
But the company had another crisis that year thanks to the investigative Netflix documentary Orgasm Inc. Its director Sarah Gibson said she was contacted by Emmy-nominated writer and director Lena Dunham and encouraged to look into 'the wellness industrial complex and unregulated alternative healing modalities'.
Gibson's interviews with former OneTaste employees painted a grim picture. One said the organisation 'went from utopia to a hell hole'. Former staffer Ayries Blanck declined to be interviewed, according to the documentary, 'out of fear of reprisals,' but her story was told: in 2015, OneTaste paid her a $325,000 (£246,000) settlement after she claimed she was ordered to sleep with managers and clients, which she considered to be sexual assault.
The FBI began an investigation into the company in 2018 for possible sex trafficking, prostitution and labour law infractions, and in June 2023, Daedone and Cherwitz were indicted on a count of conspiracy for forced labour. The indictment claimed that the pair had instructed members to 'engage in sexual acts they found uncomfortable or repulsive' in order to reach enlightenment, that resistance 'was not tolerated', and that the company withheld promised wages and commissions.
It also accused OneTaste of subjecting participants to surveillance and indoctrination. Daedone and Cherwitz both pleaded not guilty. They face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Last week, their criminal trial began in New York. US attorney Sean Fern told the jury: 'They recruited vulnerable women to perform sexual labour for their benefit' in return for 'power, prestige and money'. Fern also claimed: 'The victims came to OneTaste seeking personal growth. They left as shells of their former selves.'
Cherwitz's lawyer, Mike Robotti, criticised the prosecution's 'frightening tales', and compared OM with 'yoga or CrossFit'. Robotti claimed that OneTaste employees 'were having fun, and they were having sex. The exit door was always open.'
Daedone's lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, has defended Harvey Weinstein, R Kelly and Bill Cosby. She said in her opening statement that the complainants are now married with kids and don't want people to know 'what they were doing in their 20s'. She continued: 'Grown people made grown decisions they don't want to stand by.'
She has already scored one victory by getting a key piece of evidence thrown out: Blanck's handwritten journals, which featured in the Netflix documentary. It was later discovered that some portions had been copied from journals that were originally typewritten.
Other former employees are now giving testimony, including one known as Becky. She told the jury that she was expected to perform OM 'with anybody off the street' when she was 23, adding: 'I was the perfect mark.'
With little neutral evidence in play, it's a classic courtroom battle of competing narratives: Daedone's idea of sexual enlightenment and freedom versus former practitioners' alleged accounts of abuse and exploitation. It remains to be seen whether the jury decides that this temple of bliss was actually a world of pain.

What's YOUR personality type? Scientists say all men fit into 6 categories – take the test to see if you're an alpha, bravo, delta, gamma, omega, or sigma
From Fight Club to Gladiator, many films feature characters described as 'alpha males'. But did you know that there are actually six categories of men? According to scientists, all men are either alphas, bravos, deltas, gammas, omegas, or sigmas. So, which one are you? Experts from IDRlabs have developed a quick Male Hierarchy Test that will reveal which category you fit into. 'The typology of male social hierarchies has become part of internet culture and is a categorization system that sorts heterosexual men into archetypes,' IDRlabs explained. 'The system has variously been called a piece of modern mythology, pseudoscience, and a great heuristic for navigating social relationships. 'Where in the male social hierarchy would you be?' The Male Hierarchy Test features 31 statements, which respondents are asked to respond to on a five-point scale ranging from Disagree to Agree. Statements include things like 'Being in debt doesn't worry me as long as I can see a way out of it,' 'I demand a lot from the people around me,' and 'I do not panic easily.' At the end of the test, you'll be told which personality type you have, based on your answers. 1. Alpha Male Alpha males are described as the 'leaders of the masculine social hierarchy'. These men tend to be charismatic, decisive, and willing to take risks at the top - and are usually successful with women. However, it's not all fun and games. 'To maintain their position in the hierarchy, alphas must grapple with the immense burdens of responsibility as others look to them for guidance and direction,' IDRlabs explained. Examples of alpha males from TV shows and films include Captain America, Tommy Shelby from Peaky Blinders, and Maximus from Gladiator. 2. Bravo Male Bravo males are the 'lieutenants' of the masculine social hierarchy, according to IDRlabs. And contrary to popular belief, bravos are not at the bottom of the hierarchy - they're actually near the top. 'They are usually found in close proximity to the alpha, where they act as his trusted advisors and perform essential roles in the hierarchy,' the experts explaind. As loyal 'staff' to the alpha, bravos also get to enjoy many of the benefits of high social status. In fact, they tend to be well-liked by women, and are even seen as friendlier than alpha males. Ron Weasley from Harry Potter, and Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings are both examples of classic bravo males. 3. Delta Male Delta males are described as the 'workers' of the masculine social hierarchy. They consist of 'normal guys' who are not necessarilty interested in fighting for dominance, and instead pride themselves on 'getting the job done'. However, this attitude can land them in trouble. 'Because they tend to be frank and straightforward, expecting sincerity and decency in others, deltas may sometimes be exploited – by friends, family or romantic partners – who are associating with the delta to milk them for favors and resources rather than because they like them,' IDRlabs explained. 'Deltas would do well to remember that their earnestness and resources are likely to attract freeloaders.' Delta males from TV and film include Marty McFly from Back To The Future, and Frodo Baggins from Lord of the Rings. 4. Gamma Male Examples in TV and film Alpha - Captain America, Tommy Shelby, Maximus Bravo - Ron Weasley, Samwise Gamgee Delta - Marty McFly, Frodo Baggins Gamma - Jack Sparrow, Tony Stark, Han Solo Omega - Peter Parker, Walter Mitty Sigma - James Bond, Bruce Wayne, and John Wick Gamma males are the 'intellectuals' of the masculine social hierarchy. These men tend to be 'book smart', but lack the social skills, money, looks, or mental toughness needed to establish dominance. 'Because intellect is their strength, gammas often overstress the intellectual side of life, believing that it alone should determine who makes it to the top,' IDRlabs said. 'To gammas, it will often seem unfair that their intellectual inferiors are the ones to rise to the top.' Since gammas tend to be dissatisfied with their position, women tend to pick up on their frustration and dismiss them. Examples in TV and film include Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, Tony Stark from Ironman, and Han Solo from Star Wars. 5. Omega Male At the bottom of the masculine social hierarchy is the omega male. These men usually lack social skills and tend to be introverted, with no self-confidence. Unfortunately, these traits mean they are usually unpopular - particularly among women. Peter Parker from Spiderman, and Walter Mitty from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty are classic examples of omega males. 6. Sigma Male Finally, we have sigma males, who shun the masculine social hierarchy altogether. These 'lone wolves' turn their backs on the norms of society, and pursue their own path instead. This can make sigmas unpopular with alphs and bravos, who don't trust them. However, among women, sigmas usually prove to be a hit. 'Women often find the self-determination and detachment of sigmas attractive, so sigmas are likely to do well with the opposite sex,' IDRlabs explained. James Bond, Bruce Wayne, and John Wick are all examples of typical sigma men. In a recent study, scientists found that being a vegetarian makes both women and men less attractive as potential partners. Male vegetarians are also viewed as less masculine, according to the researchers. 'Women who reject traditional masculinity based on strength and dominance may perceive male vegetarians differently than those who embrace traditional masculinity,' they said.

How Prince Harry's wild Las Vegas night with Ryan Lochte ended in scandal
When Prince Harry and Ryan Lochte descended on the Las Vegas strip - with bikini-clad models and gallons of alcohol - scandal was sure to follow. The star swimmer had taken a month out of the water after dominating the London Olympics with two gold medals. He headed straight for Sin City that August for a belated birthday party, after turning 28 during the Games. He once told Kelly Osborne: 'I went with my friends, I just wanted to relax and have some downtime.' But what he wasn't counting on was bumping into Prince Harry, who'd also fled to the Strip for a recharge after representing the Royal Family as an Olympic ambassador. The then 27-year-old had been showered in praise for his maturity during the huge event - but that quickly changed after his run-in with Lochte. So when the Prince went largely unnoticed by revelers at a party hosted by Jennifer Lopez the night before meeting Ryan, he would have been forgiven for thinking the old saying of 'what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas' really was true. As J-Lo walked the red carpet at the afternoon event, hours before playing a show, Harry threw a beachball around in a pool with friends without anyone looking twice at him, even in his baggy red Bermuda shorts. The following night, they were at the luxurious Wynn Hotel and had been drinking since waking up. At around 2am, the Prince spotted Lochte, either recognizing him from his London heroics or noticing all the women that had surrounded his table. 'I curled into the corner of a leather banquette and watched a procession of young women come and go,' Harry recalled of the night in his autobiography Spare, which didn't mention Lochte. Soon enough, the swimmer and his friends were interrupted, approached by a man none of them knew. 'Prince Harry is here,' he told Lochte. 'You want to meet him?' The following night, they were at the luxurious Wynn hotel and had been drinking since waking up. Ryan said: 'Let's go!' accepting immediately. For a man whose life revolved around being number one, he was left thrilled to be in demand from royalty. He would later tell the Daily Mail: 'It was a huge honor to meet him. He's a great guy.' But after a little bit of mingling, Harry stopped Lochte from leaving. 'I was like, "Alright, I'm going to head back to my table with my friends, it was nice meeting you," and he was like, "Wait,"' Lochte said. 'He was like, "You want to get in the pool and race me? Right now?"' Lochte couldn't say no. He had just beaten the great Michael Phelps to win gold in the 400-meter individual medley in London. Why not add Prince Harry to the list? With music blasting, Harry whipped his top off and jumped in before Lochte followed, joining the groups of guys and girls who had also taken the party into the early hours. The crowds split either side of the duo to form a faint 10-meter racetrack. A girl in a bikini waited at the end to mark the finish line. Ryan admitted: 'Watching him swim, he does have good form. I was surprised. But of course, I won.' Ryan also previously told the Daily Mail of the race: 'He was a great competitor but in the end it was Team USA all the way! 'I was surprised that he challenged me. I didn't know if he had any skills in the pool but I definitely wasn't going to take it easy on him.' Surrounded by admirers, the pair stayed in the water to soak up the attention - Harry never did find his shirt again. They left the venue at around 4:30am, splitting the party in two and taking it back to their respective hotel rooms. But after a long day of drinking, only one of them was smart enough to keep the following antics behind closed doors. While Ryan confiscated the phones of those who joined him back at his hotel, Prince Harry was covertly pictured in his VIP suite by a guest, playing strip pool, naked with a scantily-clad woman next to him. Harry wrote of that day in Spare: 'We ordered breakfast, Bloody Marys. It was pool-party season in Vegas, so a big blowout was raging. 'My mates invited four or five women who worked at the hotel to join us (at the end of the night), along with two women they'd met at the blackjack tables... They looked dodgy.' After playing pool with his bodyguards, Harry admits he 'suggested we up the stakes' with strip pool. He continued: 'I was the big loser, reduced to my skivvies. Then I lost my skivvies. It was harmless, silly, or so I thought. Until the next day. 'Standing outside the hotel in the blinding desert sun I turned and saw one of my mates staring at his phone, his mouth falling open. 'I was naked before the eyes of the world. I berated myself. How had I been so stupid? Why had I trusted other people? 'I'd counted on those dodgy girls to show some basic decency and now I was going to pay the price forever. Those photos would never go away. 'My sense of guilt and shame made it hard at moments to draw a clean breath.' Ryan told Inside Edition: 'It could happen to anyone. I just tried my best to make sure that no cameras came in (to my party).' It sparked major humiliation for Harry and the Royal Family, just weeks after starring at the Olympics alongside his brother, William, and sister-in-law Kate. The late Robin Leach, a veteran entertainment columnist for the Las Vegas Sun, wrote at the time: 'That's why people come to Vegas. To let their hair down and behave badly.' Ryan said he didn't get an invite from the Prince to his suite: 'He never said anything like that. After our race, we went our separate ways.' A year later, the athlete would describe his encounter with Harry as 'a one-time thing.' It is thought that the pair haven't met again. Weeks after the shock pictures of Harry emerged, he was back serving with the army in Afghanistan as part of a 20-week deployment that ended in 2013. Certainly for Harry in the following years, the optics of being pictured with Ryan would have served as a reminder of a night where he ended up tarnishing his family's reputation. The swimmer eventually got back in the pool - he joked in one interview that racing Harry reignited a competitive streak inside of him - and headed to the Rio Olympics in 2016, where he was embroiled in his own needless controversy. Ryan, along with fellow USA swimmers Gunnar Bents, Jack Conger, and Jimmy Feigen, fabricated a story about being robbed at gunpoint by thugs posing as cops in Rio. The story unraveled spectacularly in front of a global audience. The scandal did major damage to Ryan's credibility and he lost sponsorship deals with Speedo and Ralph Lauren. He was also charged in Brazil with falsely reporting a crime but a judge threw the case out in July 2017. Whether he broke a law or not, for Harry it would have been another stark reason not to rekindle the friendship.

Love Island's Montana Brown risks backlash as she shares video of fiancé Mark O'Connor balancing their son Miley, five months, on his hands
Montana Brown risked fan backlash as she shared a video on Instagram of her fiancé Mark O'Connor balancing their baby son Miley on his hands on Sunday. The Love Island star, 29, welcomed Miley, five months, with her fiancé Mark O'Connor via a home birth in January and also share son Jude, 23 months. In a Father's Day tribute post, Montana posted a clip of Miley dressed in a baby grow as Mark carefully held him up with one hand. She also posted a throwback clip of Mark doing the same act with Jude, when he was a baby. Montana captioned the post: 'Happy Father's Day to the best dad ever @markoconnor23... Poor Miley...' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Before adding on the other clip: 'Poor Jude too [laughing face emoji]'. In February, Montana admitted she felt 'guilty' about not spending as much time with Jude since giving birth to Miley. Montana shared the confession alongside a collection of adorable family snaps, including one where she was holding both baby Miley and little Jude. She captioned the pictures: '2 weeks of baby bliss ✨ the jump from one to two has been interesting, naturally I'm more with Miley and Mark is now spending more time with Jude so I feel like Jude isn't very happy with me. 'I'm sure it will settle but I'm actually really enjoying the newborn phase. I'm finding it easier than the adjustment from 0-1 maybe because it's not all so new and I knew what to expect but I definitely feel guilty not spending as much time with Jude. 'Trying to soak up all the little moments as I feel really lucky ✨.' Montana recently opened up about the challenges of having a home birth when her baby daughter Miley was breech. She said she was advised by her NHS midwives to give birth in hospital but she insisted she wanted to follow her head and heart and stay at home. She captioned the pictures: '2 weeks of baby bliss ✨ the jump from one to two has been interesting, naturally I'm more with Miley and Mark is now spending more time with Jude so I feel like Jude isn't very happy with me' The reality star enlisted the help of a private doula for her home birth, who assured her both she and her daughter were safe. Montana took to Instagram on Sunday to share that her home birth was 'magical' but she had felt really when her waters broke due to Miley being breech, with one of the baby's legs popping out first. However she thanked her 'rock' Mark, doula Emiliana and midwife Heather for relaxing her before Miley 'flew out' two pushes later. Sharing snaps from her birth, Montana could be seen cradling her newborn with Mark kissing her forehead, while in another picture the couple gave Jude a cuddle. As Montana prepared to give birth at home, pictures showed her receiving comfort from Mark throughout, from sorting hot water bottles to helping her stretch.
