CFL lifts Shawn Lemon's gambling suspension; veteran spotted at Alouettes facility
The CFL reinstated the veteran defensive lineman with conditions Wednesday. Lemon, 36, was suspended indefinitely on April 24, 2024, for wagering on league games in 2021 while a member of the Calgary Stampeders, including one game in which he played.
Following an appeal, an independent arbitrator upheld the suspension.
'Protecting the integrity of the play on the field is of the utmost importance and we will not tolerate players violating the CFL's match manipulation policy,' CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston said in a statement. 'Mr. Lemon's suspension, which was the longest in league history, was necessary and appropriate.
'He has taken full responsibility for his actions. He understands how wagering negatively impacts sports and has re-educated himself on league policy. He is now committed to helping other players learn from his mistake.'
The reinstatement comes with specific conditions. Any future violations of the league's match manipulation policy will result in a lifetime ban.
Lemon, who's currently a free agent, was seen exiting Montreal's Olympic Stadium wearing an Alouettes hat and sporting the team's backpack later Wednesday. He didn't immediately respond to an interview request from The Canadian Press.
'We just won't comment on him right now. He's not a part of our team just yet,' Alouettes head coach Jason Maas said moments earlier. 'But I think everybody that knows us and how we feel about Shawn, it hasn't changed.
'He's a great player, a great guy. He's been tremendous in our locker room … he's been nothing short of amazing when he's been in our building and I think everybody would say that to a man.'
Lemon won't be able to play immediately. He still faces a two-game suspension under the league's drug policy after testing positive for the banned stimulant phentermine, which is prescribed as an appetite suppressant.
Suspended players can't participate in regular-season or post-season games. It is at the club's discretion whether to allow players to participate in other team activities, such as training camp, pre-season games, practices or meetings.
Alouettes linebacker Darnell Sankey couldn't hide his excitement about Lemon's potential return.
'Lemon is a hell of a player, an even better man, and I feel like he definitely deserves another shot in this league,' Sankey said. 'He's done a lot of great things and he's an amazing player, and we're excited.
'We try to stay focused on who's here, and when he comes back, we'll welcome him back with open arms — if that's what happens.'
Lemon must complete all mandatory league education, including the CFL match manipulation policy and continue participating in counselling sessions he has been attending.
The CFL's original suspension of Lemon came two weeks following his retirement after helping Montreal defeat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 28-24 in the '23 Grey Cup. Lemon initially signed a one-year deal with the Alouettes in December 2023 to play a 14th CFL campaign.
The league said at the time no evidence indicated games were impacted by Lemon's wagering and that Stampeders coaches, teammates and team personnel were unaware of his actions.
A week before the CFL suspended Lemon, Jontay Porter of the Toronto Raptors was banned for life from the NBA. An investigation determined he disclosed confidential information to sports bettors, bet on league games and limited his time on the court — on at least one occasion — for betting purposes. Earlier, Ottawa Senators forward Shane Pinto was suspended for the first half of the 2023-24 NHL season — 41 games — for violating the league's sports wagering rules.
In June, Tucupita Marcano of the San Diego Padres was banned from baseball for life for betting on the sport. Oakland pitcher Michael Kelly and three minor-league players also received one-year suspensions for gambling-related violations.
Lemon appealed his suspension in May, which allowed him to report to Montreal's training camp and play with the CFL team. He helped the Alouettes open the '24 season with four straight wins before another arbitrator ruled July 4 to reinstate the league's original indefinite suspension.
Lemon's appeal was heard Aug. 2 and Aug. 5. He had continued to practise with the Alouettes but didn't play in any of their remaining 14 regular-season contests or their East Division final loss to Toronto.
Lemon became a free agent this off-season.
The six-foot-two, 242-pound Lemon is a three-time Grey champion. The native of Charleston, S.C., began his pro career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as a practice-roster player in 2011 and has spent time with every CFL team, some on multiple occasions, except Hamilton.
His other Grey Cup wins were with Calgary (2014) and Toronto (2017).
Lemon also spent time with the NFL's San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as two Arena Football League teams and another in the Indoor Football League.
Lemon has recorded 262 tackles, two special-teams tackles and 102 sacks over his CFL career. He also had three interceptions, 30 forced fumbles and returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
He was a CFL all-star in 2022 when he had 14 sacks with Calgary and was the West Division's top defensive player that season.

Edmonton QB Fajardo finally set to face former team as Roughriders host Elks
REGINA - After a week of speculation, the Edmonton Elks have confirmed that quarterback Cody Fajardo will have a homecoming of sorts against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday in Regina. Fajardo, who was dealt to Edmonton by Montreal in the off-season, played three seasons for the Riders before signing with the Alouettes prior to the 2023 CFL season. Fajardo went on to lead the Als to a 26-24 victory over the favoured Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 2023 Grey Cup game, being named game MVP after completing 21-of-26 passes for 290 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. In the first five games of the season, Fajardo has served as backup to Tre Ford. Both quarterbacks shared first team reps during practice this week with Elks head coach Mark Killam being coy about who would start against the Riders. 'You're just going to have to wait until we release the depth chart,' Killam said during a media scrum on Tuesday. On Thursday morning, the Elks sent out their depth chart for Friday with Fajardo pencilled in as the starter. Having also played for the Toronto Argonauts and B.C. Lions, this will be Fajardo's first start ever against the Riders. Saskatchewan head coach Corey Mace had a sharp answer when he was asked Thursday if he cared who the Elks were going to start at quarterback. 'We always care, but it just kind of narrows the focus a little bit,' he said. 'It'll be another night of preparation for the guys to narrow in. Now with that being said, you still could see both . . . . We were preparing for both but certainly there will be a little heavier emphasis now on Cody.' In his three seasons with Saskatchewan, Fajardo had a record of 27-17 as starter, totalling 11,046 passing yards with 53 touchdowns and 33 interceptions. After two seasons with the Alouettes, he was dealt to the Elks for McLeod Bethel-Thompson, with Davis Alexander replacing Fajardo as Montreal's starting quarterback. Earlier this week Fajardo told reporters what he thought the Elks need to do to be successful on offence. 'We've got to stay on the field, second down conversions, a lot of people are talking about it,' he said. 'The second thing is that narratives don't win football games, and they don't lose football games so everybody can write whatever they want.' Fajardo took over from Ford in the fourth quarter against the B.C. Lions on July 13, finishing five of seven passing for 78 yards and one touchdown in a 32-14 loss. Mace, who signed on as Saskatchewan's head coach in 2024, is familiar with Fajardo. In 2021, as a coach with the Calgary Stampeders, Mace's defence faced Fajardo in three games. Yet Mace explained that preparation is more about the present than the past. 'Sometimes you've got to be careful just looking at players as who they've always been. You kind of want to look at who they are current day,' he said. 'He's a heck of a quarterback, so we've got to be on our P's and Q's defensively to make sure we make it as tough as day possible on him,' Mace added. The Riders have come out of the starting game hot while the Elks have struggled. Yet the Riders know firsthand what can happen when a team underestimates an opponent. The Elks came into Regina last season with an 0-7 record while the Riders had a 5-2 mark, but the Elks posted a 42-31 victory with Ford passing for 250 yards and Javon Leake rushing for 169 yards and three touchdowns. Linebacker Jameer Thurman says the Riders will not be taking the Elks lightly on Friday. 'I don't think we're underestimating them,' he said. Stampeders wide receiver Damien Alford on a touchdown tear in CFL rookie season
CALGARY - Damien Alford says before his nickname was 'Moose', it was 'Bambi'. 'My freshman year, I was all skinny and didn't have that much weight on me,' recalled the Calgary Stampeders wide receiver Wednesday. 'My coach called me Bambi before the season started. As my career went on and I got bigger, stronger, I got more experience, I had a breakout game versus Army. He said, 'we can't call him Bambi no more. We've got to call him Moose.'' The 24-year-old from Montreal has quickly become an offensive threat in his rookie CFL season with five touchdown catches in his last three games. The Stampeders (5-1) ride a three-game win streak into Thursday's clash with the Montreal Alouettes (4-2) at McMahon Stadium. The six-foot-six, 224-pound Alford was the first overall pick in this year's CFL draft by Calgary after a season with Utah and four at Syracuse. It was the first time since 2014 that the Stampeders owned the first selection. 'This year was really just to come out, do what I got to do, learn from the best that are here, and whenever my name gets called to go on the field and execute the way I know I'm able to,' Alford said. Vernon Adams Jr., expressed an interest in large targets to throw at when Calgary acquired the quarterback from the B.C. Lions last November. The Stampeders signed the six-foot-four Dominique Rhymes — Adams' former Lions teammate — in free agency. Stampeders coach and general manager Dave Dickenson confirmed Wednesday that Alford also filled that desire. 'It plays into our thought process for sure,' Dickenson said. 'We knew Vernon likes those big targets and he trusts them. And also, there's just not that many of them, especially in the Canadian side.' Alford has caught five of Adams' eight touchdown throws over the last three games, but the quarterback says Alford is still a work in progress. 'He's a super-raw, super-talented kid,' Adams said. 'We think the world of him, but he's still learning and still learning some different things.' Complementing Alford's exploits in recent games has been a Calgary defence that's contributed four touchdowns while giving up the league's fewest at seven. 'I've never had a defence like this that has had my back the way they have my back,' Adams said. The Stampeders and Alouettes tied 19-19 at McMahon the last time the two clubs clashed Sept. 14, 2024. The Als are coming off a narrow 26-25 win over the Toronto Argonauts last week. With Montreal quarterback Davis Alexander on the six-game injured list with a hamstring ailment from that game, McLeod Bethel-Thompson gets his third start of the season. The 37-year-old veteran, looking for his first win of 2025, has thrown for 472 yards and three touchdowns. While Calgary leads the league in average rushing yards per game (130), Montreal's defence allows a league-low 5.8 yards per play. IN AND OUT Stampeder running back Jeshrun Antwi, who missed the last three games with an ankle injury, returns to face his former team of four seasons. 'We do feel like getting Antwi back against his former team, motivated and also good at special teams, but also one of our smarter guys that has played against this defence in practice a lot, he could be a big asset, not only just when he's playing, but on the sideline as well.' Dickenson said. Montreal returner Lincoln Victor, who attended the Ottawa Redblacks training camp, will make his CFL debut in place of James Letcher Jr. (broken hand). Safety Scott Hutter of London, Ont., makes his Alouettes debut after five seasons with the Edmonton Elks. Ticats defensive back Amos meets with CFL about hit on Ottawa quarterback Brown
TORONTO - Veteran defensive back DaShaun Amos had a hearing with the CFL on Tuesday regarding his hit on Ottawa Redblacks quarterback Dru Brown. Brown left Ottawa's 30-15 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the second quarter Sunday after being hit by Amos. The Ticats defensive back came clean off the edge on a blitz and delivered a blow that knocked Brown's helmet off. Replays showed Amos struck the bottom of Brown's facemask with the crown of his helmet. Brown's helmet flew off, though his chinstrap wasn't fully secured. Brown left the game and didn't return. Amos received a Grade 2 25-yard penalty for roughing the passer. The CFL is continuing to go through its discipline process. The six-foot-11, 190-pound Amos is in his first season with Hamilton. Before that, he spent three years with the Toronto Argonauts (2022-24), helping them win Grey Cup titles in 2022 and '24. The three-time Grey Cup champion began his CFL career with Calgary (2018-19, 2021). The two players exchanged messages on social media following the hit. 'First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers go out to Dru,' Amos wrote on X. 'As someone who has lost significant playing time due to injury, that's the last thing I would intentionally do to someone. 'The talk about lack of technique, I'll take it, but the cheap shot, dirty player talk? Got the wrong guy.' Brown responded that he has no animosity toward Amos. 'The people that matter know you're not that type of player,' Brown responded. Ottawa is on a bye week. Hamilton visits the B.C. Lions on Sunday night.
