Udhayanidhi to open projects in Karur
Udhayanidhi Stalin
will inaugurate 13 development projects developed at Rs 56.25 crore and distribute govt welfare assistance in Karur on Wednesday, said Karur MLA V Senthilbalaji.
The main event will be held at the newly constructed Tirumanilaiyur bus stand at Rs 40 crore.
Other projects to be inaugurated include the Karur Kamaraj daily market, the Vengamedu fish market, and a science park on the collectorate premises. Welfare schemes including housing grants will be handed over to 18,331 beneficiaries. Earlier, Senthilbalaji laid the foundation for a modern swimming pool at the Karur corporation boys' higher secondary school to be built at Rs 1.69 crore. The project is expected to be completed within six months.

Veena visits Bindhu's kin, assures aid
Kottayam: A day after opposition parties staged statewide protests demanding her resignation, health minister Veena George visited the family of D Bindu, the 52-year-old woman who had died after a portion of a building at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kottayam, collapsed three days ago. Bindu had been staying at the hospital to care for her daughter, who was admitted as an inpatient, when she was trapped under the debris. The minister assured the family that the govt would cover the full cost of their daughter's surgery, with further treatment decisions to be taken after a medical board meeting on Monday. She added that the state would also consider the family's other demands, including compensation and a job for Bindu's son. "As far as I'm concerned, this family's sorrow is my sorrow. I met her husband, mother, and other relatives and shared their grief. The govt will stand by them in every possible way," George said, adding that chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan would announce the relief measures after a state cabinet decision. Bindu's husband, Visruthan, said that the family was hopeful about govt support and stated that the family is satisfied with the interventions made by the authorities. CPM state committee member K Anil Kumar, who accompanied the minister, also promised assistance for completing the family's house construction. Meanwhile, Kottayam MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan demanded Rs 25 lakh in compensation for the family, a permanent job for Bindu's son and free treatment for her daughter. UDF leader Ramesh Chennithala, who also visited Bindu's home, demanded a safety audit of all state govt hospital buildings. He criticized the health minister for fearing protests and avoiding a daylight visit to Bindu's residence. "People are unhappy with the health department's reckless actions," he stated. "There's no medicine or basic supplies, forcing doctors to treat poor patients only if they bring their own. We have good doctors, but what can they do without medicines?"

Vidisha (Madhya Pradesh) [India], July 6 (ANI): Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday said that the government is preparing a new, stricter law to address the problem of duplicate fertilisers and seeds. He stated that the current law imposes only a small fine of around Rs 500, allowing offenders to escape easily. Speaking to the reporters, Chouhan said, '...We are working on bringing a new law to tackle the issue of duplicate fertilisers, seeds... The law will be strict as the present law is not that strict, but just about a compensation of around Rs 500, and hence those who commit this get released easily.' Earlier, Chouhan described Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee as an 'ardent' nationalist leader and noted that the tricolour is now 'flying high' in Kashmir. Govt officials, police personnel and HSIIDC officers are exempted from this order." However, the farmers from these areas filed a petition in court, alleging the govt was buying their land at unfairly low rates. They appealed to the court to direct the govt to increase the compensation amount. In response, the court ordered the govt to pay Rs 2 crore per acre to those farmers. When the farmers from the other nine villages heard about this decision, they too began staging protests, demanding an increase in compensation for their acquired land. After a long struggle, the govt agreed to pay them Rs 46 lakh per acre and got them to sign affidavits to prevent further legal action. Farmers were initially paid Rs 21 lakh each, with a promise of receiving the remaining Rs 25 lakh later. However, that additional compensation has still not been paid. As a result, the farmers of nine village have been staging an indefinite sit-in protest since Feb 2024.
