LSU baseball runs ruled Nicholls in Monday night win

Yahoo25-02-2025

The rain could not prevent the matchup between LSU baseball and Nicholls this week. As a bonus, the hometown kid, William Schmidt got his first start on the mound. After a seven-inning run rule, Schmidt would be credited with his first win as a starter as the Tigers took the game 13-3.
The Colonels wasted no time putting pressure on him as they scored a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning to make it 1-0. In the bottom of the first, the Tigers roared their way out into the lead as Daniel Dickinson hit an RBI single, Cade Arrambide walked with bases loaded, and Stephen Milam hit a two-RBI single to make it 4-1 Tigers.

In the bottom of the second inning, Jared Jones hit his second homer of the season as a solo shot increased the lead to 5-1. The bats would then go quiet for both teams in the next two innings as neither team scored a run. Schmidt was pulled from the game in the top of the fifth inning after 4.2 innings of work. In that stretch, he gave up one earned and one unearned run on five hits, three strikeouts, and no walks.
A solid start for the talented Freshman and thanks to the Tigers getting a run rule he earned the first win of his career! He gave up the second run on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-2. DJ Primeaux entered to pitch for him and he got the Tigers out of the inning.

As the Tigers did in the first inning, they matched the run Nicholls scored and tacked on even more of their own. We got to see our first Monster Mash of the season in the bottom of the fifth as Milam hit a three-run shot to left field to make it 8-2. Derek Curiel hit an RBI single, and Jones hit an RBI single to increase the lead to 10-2 after five innings.

Jaden Noot entered the game to pitch in the top of the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, Nicholls scored another run on a fielder's choice to cut the lead to 10-3. In the bottom of the inning, two runners scored for LSU after an error in the outfield and then Mic Paul scored on a wild pitch as the Tigers used a run rule to beat Nicholls 13-3 in seven innings!
LSU will be off Tuesday but the Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday as they take on Dallas Baptist at 7 PM.

Westburg, Urias power Orioles to 10-1 win over Tigers

BALTIMORE (AP) — Jordan Westburg hit a three-run homer during a seven-run eighth inning and the Baltimore Orioles pulled away to a 10-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night. Zach Eflin (6-2) allowed a run over 6 2/3 innings for his third consecutive victory. Keegan Akin struck out pinch-hitter Jahmai Jones to strand two and escape the seventh when it was a one-run game. Ramón Urías hit a two-run shot off Casey Mize (5-3) before the Orioles got going against the Tigers' bullpen. Gunnar Henderson singled in a run off Tyler Holton in the seventh. Then Cedric Mullin got the eighth started with an RBI double off Brenan Hanifee before scoring on a wild pitch. Ryan O'Hearn followed with a two-run double off Beau Brieske, before Westburg hooked Brieske's 1-0 offering around the left-field foul pole. Colt Keith provided the Tigers' run on an RBI double that struck high off the out-of-town scoreboard in right. Mize (6-2) struck out seven and walked two over 5 1/3 innings. Key moment After Keith's double cut it to 2-1, Detroit inserted Dillon Dingler to pinch hit with runners on second and third. Eflin induced Dingler into a sharp grounder to third, and Urías fired home in plenty of time for Adley Rutschman to tag out Wenceel Perez as the potential tying run. Key stat Eflin has now posted a 1.47 ERA in three career starts against the Tigers (18 1/3 IP, 3 ER). Up next Detroit's reigning AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal (6-2, 2.16 ERA) looks for his first consecutive wins since mid-April after allowing only one run across his last three starts (23 2/3 IP). The lefty faces Orioles right-hander Dean Kremer (5-6, 4.98), who walked a season-high four batters and allowed five runs over 5 2/3 innings in a 7-0 loss at Detroit on April 27. ___ AP MLB:

Jackson Jobe needs Tommy John surgery in huge Tigers injury blow

The Tigers will be without one of their budding young stars for the rest of the year — and likely more. Right-hander Jackson Jobe will undergo Tommy John surgery, the team announced Wednesday in what is a crusher for its rotation. Jobe, 22, was placed on the 15-day IL at the end of May with a flexor strain, but now he will miss the last four months of 2025 and some of the 2026 season. Tigers pitcher Jackson Jobe pitches in the fourth inning against the San Francisco Giants at Comerica Park. Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images The third overall pick in the 2021 draft made his big league debut at the end of last season as the Tigers made an improbable run into the postseason as a wild-card entrant. He threw two scoreless outings in the regular season before tossing 1²/₃ frames in the postseason, yielding three runs. Through 10 starts this year, Jobe had a 4.22 ERA with a 1.49 WHIP but showed off a high-velocity fastball that averaged 96.1 mph and sat in the 81st percentile in the big leagues, according to Baseball Savant. In his final start on May 28 against the Giants, though, Jobe's fastball went from 97 mph to the 91-92 mph range by the time he exited in the fifth inning. 'When he came out of his outing, he reported that he had a little bit of soreness,' Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters at the time. 'We took him immediately to get evaluated.' IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Detroit, sitting at 44-24 and eight games up in the AL Central, still boast one of baseball's best pitching staffs, which is led by 2024 Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal. The Tigers' starting pitching ranks third in MLB in both ERA (3.08) and WHIP (1.13).
