
Man dies in early morning fire during Gawai Day in Bintulu
BINTULU: It was a gloomy Gawai Day celebration after a man died when a fire broke out at his house on Jalan Sibiew, near SJK Siong Boon, early this morning.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said the victim, identified as Wong Jun Din, in his 50s, was believed to have been trapped inside the house when the fire started at 2.32am.
"The victim is believed to have been trapped but was successfully pulled out by other residents in an unconscious state, with burn marks all over his body, before being confirmed dead by the Health Ministry medical team at the scene," the centre said in a statement.
In a separate incident, five single-storey terrace houses with permanent structures were completely destroyed in a fire at Kidurong MLNG Housing, Jalan Abang Usop, Bintulu, on Saturday night.
The centre said a team from the Kidurong and Bintulu Fire and Rescue stations was deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 11.43pm.
"The fire was extinguished by 6.25am today."

Bayan Lepas blaze kills 19 goats, damages cars and lorry near shed; cause under probe
GEORGE TOWN, June 2 — Nineteen goats were killed when the livestock shed they were placed in caught fire in Kampung Jawa Bayan Lepas here today. Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director (Operations) John Sagun Francis said they received an emergency call at 12.58 pm about the fire and that 19 goats placed in the shed died while only one was rescued. He said the fire also affected three cars and a one-tonne lorry parked near the shed, with damage to the vehicles estimated at between 30 and 90 per cent. He added that the nine-man team from the Bayan Baru Fire and Rescue Station took nearly an hour to put out the blaze. (Fire and rescue department pic) PETALING JAYA : Two people were killed and 12 others injured in a collision involving three vehicles at Jalan Machang-Pasir Puteh, near Kampung Banggol Judah in Kelantan late last night. The crash occurred at 11.15pm, claiming the lives of Zulkifli Salleh, 54, who died at the scene, and Zakquan Abdullah, 12, who succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Operation commander Suhaimi Razali, from the Machang fire and rescue station, said both victims were in a Proton Waja together with four women, Sinar Harian reported. 'The accident involved three vehicles, a Chevrolet pickup truck, a Perodua Kancil, and a Proton Waja. One of the cars is believed to have been coming from the opposite direction,' he was quoted as saying. 'The man who died was trapped in the vehicle and we had to extricate him.' Suhaimi said the injured included two women and three men in the pickup truck, as well as a man and two children, aged four and seven, who were in the Kancil. Machang police chief Ahmad Shafiki Hussin confirmed that a report had been lodged over the incident.

One killed, 13 injured in three-vehicle crash in Machang
KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — A man was killed and 13 others were injured following a collision involving three vehicles on the Machang-Pasir Puteh road in Kampung Banggol Judah late last night. The fatal accident occurred at around 11.55pm and claimed the life of 54-year-old Zulkifli Salleh at the scene, Sinar Harian reported. According to Senior Fire Officer II Mohd Suhaimi Razali from the Machang Fire and Rescue Station, the deceased was travelling in a Proton Waja along with four women and a 12-year-old child. The collision involved three vehicles — a Chevrolet pickup truck, a Perodua Kancil, and the Proton Waja — all believed to be heading from opposite directions. "The man who died was trapped in the vehicle, and we carried out a size-up to extricate him," Mohd Suhaimi was quoted saying Two women and three men people from the pickup truck sustained injuries in the crash. The Perodua Kancil driver and his passengers, including a man and two children aged four and seven, were also injured. All victims were handed over to the police for further investigation, with Machang District Police Chief Superintendent Ahmad Shafiki Hussin confirming the report.
