However, despite a difficult season at Old Trafford, he still wants to prove the doubters wrong.
Ruben Amorim is likely to shake up his goalkeeper options this summer with second-choice Altay Bayindir expected to leave.
However, his current plan is to keep faith with Onana but buy someone who will put serious pressure on the 29-year-old.
He plans to spend the budget he has got available on other areas of his team – notably on reshaping his forward line.
Meanwhile, he will hope Onana can return to the form that persuaded ex-boss Erik ten Hag to pay £47 million for him two years ago.
Clubs in Saudi Arabia have also shown interest in Onana, but he is determined to fight for his future with United.
Aston Villa's World Cup winner Emi Martinez is pushing for a move to United and could be available this summer.
SunSport exclusively revealed Onana's desire to fight for his place in the Red Devils starting XI.

Rangers Dor Turgemen deal in doubt over Middle East conflict
Turgeman has been on the radar at Ibrox and some reports even suggested a deal to bring him from Maccabi Tel Aviv could be close. Russell Martin was believed to have made the 21-year-old a top target after taking the job and he is also well known to 49ers Enterprises having been on Leeds' radar previously. A new striker is high on the agenda at Ibrox with last season's top scorer Cyriel Dessers looking to be on the way out to AEK Athens. Talks had been opened over Turgeman but may now be grinding to a halt, because of the rising tensions between Israel and Iran. Read more: Sport 5 report that Maccabi are now thinking it may be unwise to sell on key players as they will find it tough to attract replacements from overseas. The report suggests the striker "certainly" won't be sold prior to the Champions League qualifiers against Cypriots Pafos next month. And they may also decide to significantly up the asking price for any of their players who are attracting interest, to make selling up more palatable. Rangers may need to move on to alternative targets with Danilo and Hamza Igamane the only striking options left if Dessers is sold.

Rennes 'flooded' with Kyogo offers as stance revealed
The Hoops hero has had a nightmare time of it since moving to France in a £10million deal in January and was frozen out for much of the latter part of the season. The manager who signed him was quickly sacked and later admitted he didn't have a say in the signing of the Japan international. His replacement, Habib Beye, ended up freezing Kyogo out and he wasn't seen towards the end of the campaign. A return to Celts has been floated and would be almost unanimously welcomed by supporters, but it would seem there is plenty of other interest. Read more: Birmingham City were strongly linked having returned to the Championship after promotion and have a track record of signing plyers who are proven in Scotland, including ex-Hoops midfielder Tomoki Iwata. But French outfit L'Equipe say they are far from the only ones with a string of enquiries are claimed. The reports adds Rennes would prefer to sanction a permanent exit but may be willing to green light a temporary one.
