Coronation Street cast hit by fresh blow as budget cuts continue to bite
The Coronation Street cast have been hit by a fresh blow amid the ongoing budget cuts - which have seen a number of changes in the long-running ITV soap throughout the year
The cast and crew of ITV soap Coronation Street are reportedly said to be "furious" over the latest impact of budget cuts. Earlier this year, it was reported the long-running soap had made changes to filming in a bid to cut back on expenses.
Now, the cast and crew have been hit with another huge blow, as the latest impact has reportedly left them forking out for their own summer party.
In January, it was reported the show had infuriated some of the cast by reducing the number of established characters filming inside the iconic Rovers Return pub in a bid to save money. The show has also seen a number of departures this year including Colson Smith (Craig Tinker) and Charlotte Jordan (Daisy Midgeley).
The latest change reportedly means the cast have had to organise their own summer party, which each person paying £22 per for the bash. They'll also be paying for drinks on top of the sum, which covers venue, entertainment and security.
A source told The Sun: 'It's been a difficult few months and people were really looking forward to the party, but it puts a bit of a dampener on things that they have to pay.
'It might not be a lot to some of the bigger known stars but for some staff it is. The fact that drinks aren't included is a real blow too. People aren't really that surprised though considering the constant budget cuts.'
The Mirror understands that the Coronation Street crew organised the party, not ITV bosses, and the whole team is said to be looking forward to the event. The Mirror have contacted Coronation Street and ITV for comment.
The news comes months after it was announced the soap would be cutting down to five hours a week, rather than six. However, it's not the only ITV soap to have their hours cut, as Emmerdale will also follow suit.
The change is set to take place at the beginning of 2026. From January, there will be a soap 'power hour', with Emmerdale airing for half an hour each day at 8pm.
Coronation Street will air straight after at 8.30pm each day, again for half an hour, as the drama from the Cobbles returns to its daily offerings.
However, there's also a huge positive in January for both soaps, as for the first time ever, they'll join forces in an unprecedented, one-off special episode to launch the broadcaster's new power hour.
It will mark the first time a crossover has happened in British soap history, will see characters from both soaps come together in a celebration of the soap genre.

Former Coronation Street star Georgia May Foote has suffered a huge loss after a fire ripped through her beauty business on Wednesday. The actress-turned-beautician, 34, who is best known for playing Katie Armstrong on the ITV soap, explained how the storage unit near Manchester caught ablaze. She said a slew of small studios and businesses, including her own, were affected by the blaze in an update shared to Instagram. Speaking in the clip, Georgia said: 'Unfortunately my little business was affected by a huge fire within the storage works unit in Middleton last night. 'Not only has my business burned down, but so has many other people's most loved possessions.' The former Strictly contestant then pleaded with fans to come forward with a donation, to help cover the costs of all the stock and equipment lost in the fire. Georgia continued: 'Even though as beauticians we can move into a new space, our stock and tools which we spend years collecting have all gone. 'We can no longer work, my friends and beauticians have to start again, with no way of making the money to buy these tools. I'm asking you all to give a little to help my friends rebuild their business.' The actress has endured a tumultuous time of late as she's recently opened up about a series of health struggles, including the skin condition vitiglio. Last year she appeared on This Morning Live, where she spoke about the condition which is caused by a lack of pigment in the skin. Then after a holiday to Egypt in May 2024, she shared a photo of her hands with the caption: 'Every time I go on holiday and I get a beautiful tan, I see how much my vitiligo has spread more than ever before. 'I would be lying if I didn't say it gets to me. It makes me feel super insecure at times. But seeing how the people around me support me and still love me the same makes my heart feel full. 'I've noticed people staring, having a good old nosey with their faces screwed up, and that's when my heart drops. 'So this is just a friendly reminder to those people to be kind. I'm sure the way it makes you feel is nothing in comparison to how the person with it feels.' After a holiday to Egypt, the Strictly Come Dancing runner up shared a picture of her hands and uploaded a lengthy post urging people to be kind The TV actress then expressed her wish to be a spokesperson for the unsightly condition. 'I'm proud to be a voice for people like me with the condition. I battle with how I feel about it every day,' she said. 'Today's one of those days I remember there is nothing I can do about it. So here we are. Showing it in all its glory (I do have lipstick on, but my whole colour has now gone in and around my lips).' During her time on Corrie, Georgia's character Katy was the youngest daughter of Owen Armstrong (Ian Puleston-Davies) and the sister of Izzy Armstrong (Cherylee Houston). Georgia enjoyed some spicy storylines, including a surprise pregnancy and an affair. But then in 2017 showrunners gave her character an offscreen death, after she was written out via a car accident, closing the door on any future comebacks. Aside from showbuisness, Georgia is married to musician Kris Evans and the pair celebrated a year of being married last July.

But today more is expected of us. Blame social media if you want. The world has moved on. Men are expected to care more about how they dress. But in the UK it seems we didn't get the memo and while Europeans got more stylish, British blokes spun off at a tangent, like a divergent timeline in Marvel's Loki series. But you can do better. Now we are re-establishing better relations with our continental brethren, it's time to smarten up our act — and the good news is, it's not hard. How do I know? Because I did it. I too was once like you, a hopeless summer fashion victim. I wore cargo shorts, West Ham footie shirts pulled over my dad-bod beer belly, and athleisure sandals. I didn't realise and was frog-marched from the pool by lifeguards who made me purchase tight trunks from a vending machine. Walking back into the pool in my tiny new Lycra swimwear was like the walk of shame in Game Of Thrones. Today a 5-inch inseam is as daring as I get (which is good style advice for any man). My fashion salvation happened after I met a younger, stylish woman, who is now my wife. Stephanie, 45, knocked me into shape and taught me how to dress. It didn't take a lot of effort and I even get compliments occasionally from my 23-year-old daughter and 18-year-old son. So, as you head off for your hols, take a few tips from me. Ditch the football shirts, no one in Mykonos cares about Burnley FC. Ditch anything with big logos on it. Wear leather sandals or espadrilles. Choose linen or seersucker short-sleeved shirts. You can't go wrong with a polo shirt and tailored shorts in neutral palettes. Replace your battered baseball cap with a Panama hat. Treat yourself to some understated sunglasses. Bodies should get some attention too. Before 2006, we could get away with a hairy dad bod, but then the film Casino Royale hit the big screen, and when Daniel Craig emerged from the sea like God chiselled from marble he ruined it for all of us. Now we're expected to look presentable in swimwear. So, get your back waxed, manscape your chest hair. Have a fake tan, but don't go mad. Ask for a light one. Get your eyebrows shaped and tinted. It's not unusual any more and makes a big difference, I promise. No one is going to think any less of you. Maybe swap a pint for a glass of rosé occasionally, or a mojito. Just a few small tweaks and the new stylish you will fit right in on beaches from the Costas to the Greek islands. Make the UK cool again, just don't mention Brexit.
