As the URC playoffs loom on the near horizon, the Stormers (in sixth place with 45 points) could hop into fifth position if they win their match and the Bulls defeat Cardiff earlier in the day.
The Cape side will undoubtedly target a full house of points when they take on the Dragons at the DHL Stadium, especially with the visitors boasting only one win to eight by the hosts in the competition to date.
The statistics also sway heavily in the Capetonians' favour with 425 points scored and 382 conceded to 308 and 534 points respectively by the Dragons. But with nothing left to lose, the Welsh side will be fired up and resolute in their quest to make a strong statement and salvage some pride in their last two matches of the season.

UPDATED Top 10 most-capped Test players list after Eben Etzebeth joins exclusive club

Saturday's opening Rugby Championship match between the Springboks and Wallabies at Ellis Park in Johannesburg marked a significant occasion for veteran lock Eben Etzebeth who extended his record as the most capped Springbok of all time to 134 matches. That feat also saw him break out of a tie with former Ireland scrumhalf Conor Murray in joint-11th place in the global pecking order to joint 10th position alongside Welsh prop Gethin Jenkins. Only two players ahead of Etzebeth in the list – James Slipper and Beauden Barrett – are still playing. Etzebeth should get the chance to claim 10th place on his own when the Springboks take on Australia for a second time this coming weekend in Cape Town. At still only 33 years of age, there is plenty of time for Etzebeth to further climb the list before he hangs up his studs. Western Province aims for accuracy against Cheetahs in Currie Cup clash

In the absence of Zain Davids, lock Gary Porter will lead Western Province against the Cheetahs on Saturday in Bloemfontein. Image: BackpagePix Western Province hopes their training session this past week against the Stormers squad will help to improve their accuracy when they face the Cheetahs on Saturday afternoon in Bloemfontein in the Currie Cup. They counted at least five possible scoring chances they did not take against the Griquas last weekend, and it's something they want to rectify as they search for a first victory. WP find themselves at the foot of the Currie Cup log, and a victory over the Free State side could propel them up from the bottom. However, it will be anything but an easy encounter at the Toyota Stadium (2 pm kick-off), although head coach Labeeb Levy believes they are continuously improving. He opted again for a youthful side, bringing in Junior Springbok captain Riley Norton at flanker and fellow U20 champion Gino Cupido at outside centre. According to Levy, he hopes the hit out with the Stormers helped his side in terms of their accuracy as they look to topple the home side. 'We went against the Stormers guys this week, and when you play a talented bunch of players, they force you to focus more, and if you are not, they will punish you,' Levy said about the training against the United Rugby Championship side. 'It wasn't full contact, like mimicking a match situation, but it was good parameters that we set up. We played against them for about 20 to 25 minutes, and there were a lot of positives. They also cut some of our plans down, which forced us to sharpen up. Our team for the Carling Currie Cup clash against the Toyota Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday. 📢 team announcement — WP RUGBY (@WP_RUGBY) August 15, 2025 'That session was very valuable, and hopefully we can see how it propels us into being just as sharp on Saturday.' Levy says they've put extensive work into their set piece, as they feel teams target them in that area, and they will look to improve more against the Cheetahs. Gary Porter, who steps in as captain in the place of the injured Zain Davids, said they won't read too much into the struggles of the Cheetahs after the Bloemfontein side had to dig deep against the Sharks last weekend. ⚔️ Iron sharpens iron. Great session with the @WP_RUGBY squad. — DHL Stormers (@THESTORMERS) August 12, 2025

From Snoop Dogg to Tom Brady, stars flock to English second-tier clubs

UK - When Snoop Dogg sang the praises of Swansea City, it signalled the unlikely arrival of the latest celebrity owner in the once unfashionable Championship, English football's second tier. The American rapper has joined the Welsh club's ownership structure, investing an undisclosed sum to rub shoulders with former Real Madrid stalwart and World Cup finalist Luka Modric, who has also sunk his money into the club. "The story of the club and the area really struck a chord with me. This is a proud, working-class city and club. An underdog that bites back, just like me," Snoop said in an introductory video. In North Wales, Wrexham are dreaming of an extraordinary promotion to the Premier League this season on the back of the enthusiastic and lucrative support of Hollywood star Ryan "Deadpool" Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney. Meanwhile, former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady has a minority stake in Birmingham City, very much the second club in England's second city after Premier League outfit Aston Villa. His arrival in 2023 was not met with universal approval, with one fan asking "Tom Brady, who's he?" in the Amazon Prime Video series "Built in Birmingham: Brady and the Blues" which follows his early, whirlwind involvement in the club that includes the sacking of manager Wayne Rooney. Brady says his is a "visionary role" and he tries - not always successfully - to pass on his experience of winning seven Super Bowl winner's rings to the Birmingham players and their young manager, Chris Davies. But why do so many celebrities want to invest a slice of their fortunes into the Championship? AFP | Michael Tran Christopher Winn, course leader at the University Campus of Football Business (UCFB), told AFP the principal reason was because they see it as an attractive investment - with the carrot of the Premier League's riches if the team can gain promotion proving irresistible. "There is the notion of long-term returns, in other words buying low (in a lower league) and selling high," Winn told AFP. "While on-field success and subsequent off-field returns are no guarantee, should the promised land of the Premier League be reached, a significant profit would likely be generated on any future sale of the club, in other words generating returns for investors well beyond their initial investment and operational outlay. "Granted, that does not mean the investors are all out to make a return - football can often be a game of utility maximisation after all, and for some a personally funded passion project." - 'We could make money' - Brady's friend and co-owner at Birmingham, the New York-based investor Tom Wagner, reveals in the documentary they originally tried to buy a Premier League team but the deal fell through. Then the chance to snap up Birmingham presented itself. AFP | Darren Staples "We thought we could make some money, have a good return, which is our ultimate objective, so we just couldn't pass it up," Wagner says. Birmingham manager Davies has quickly felt the effect of having a sporting icon breathing down his neck - he good-naturedly recounted to The Times that his attempts to relax on a family holiday in the Maldives were disrupted by Brady insisting on scheduling daily conference calls at the children's dinner time. In Wagner and Brady's first season, Birmingham crashed down into League One, or England's third division, but with Davies in charge they emphatically secured promotion to the Championship this year, romping away with the League One title with a record points total. That was largely due to the Americans' injection of funds for new players such as forward Jay Stansfield, acquired from Premier League club Fulham for £15 million ($20.3 million), a huge fee for League One. Celebrities are active behind the scenes at other Championship clubs. Birmingham kicked off the season last week with a 1-1 home draw against Ipswich Town, who count multi-million-selling music star Ed Sheeran among their financial backers. Ipswich confirmed last year that Sheeran had bought a 1.4% stake in his local club and he has been the shirt sponsor for the last four years - although in a cautionary tale for other star owners, his involvement did not stop Ipswich being relegated from the Premier League last season.
