Voss behind McGovern, excited for Walsh's Blues return
After playing 17 games this year, McGovern has been unable to force his way back into Carlton's best 23 following his latest hamstring injury.
McGovern performed strongly in the VFL last weekend, but Carlton's only inclusion for Saturday's clash with Port Adelaide was star midfielder Sam Walsh.
The 30-year-old McGovern comes out of contract at season's end and is no guarantee to sign a fresh deal amid significant change at Carlton following a horror 2025.
When asked if he wanted the former Adelaide player to stay at Carlton next year, Voss replied: 'Absolutely'.
'While he's probably more on the back end of his career, rather than the front end, he's shown over the last couple of years that, some of the concerns he had around his body, there's less of those,' said the coach.
'There's nothing wrong with earning your right on the way back in.
'Being one of the older players and seeing some of the younger players playing well ... the only conversations I've had is that he's been excited by what he's seen, but he's also desperate to play.
'By not playing, clearly he's disappointed in not being able to do that.'
Third-generation Blue Jack Silvagni is another defensive pillar out of contract, weighing up options from Collingwood, the Western Bulldogs and Essendon.
Silvagni has met with all three of those clubs after already being ruled out for the rest of the season due to injury.
Voss joked Silvagni had 'been busy' but insisted he was still 'really confident' the son of the legendary Stephen Silvagni would continue at Ikon Park.
'We're at the end of the season, and they haven't signed yet,' Voss said.
'If you're lacking any confidence, it's probably around that, but in terms of needs and want to have them, we'd love for them to stay.
'But we're also realistic in where we sit in the season.'
Vice-captain Walsh will return for his first match since round 13 after recovering from a foot injury.
Voss said Walsh had been 'scratching at my door' to play, even though the Blues have just two games left this year and have long been out of finals contention.
'It's just a great sign when you've got one of your leaders that wants to see it through and wants to get out there and be a part of it,' Voss said.
'It hasn't necessarily turned to the results we're after, but we've been energised by some of the things we're seeing on the ground, seeing some of the younger players and what they've been able to do.'
Walsh has endured several interrupted pre-seasons in recent times, with serious back issues often troubling him.
The 25-year-old will be on managed minutes against the Power, but Carlton are hoping two games can help propel him into 2026.

But Hinkley told 3AW on Saturday he had not spoken to Carlton about the possibility of filling the Blues' vacant football manager role alongside his former assistant Michael Voss. Hinkley has two more games in charge of the Power after 13 years at the helm, including Saturday's clash against the Blues at Marvel Stadium. His assistant Josh Carr will take over from next season. ‘Diabolical': Horrible news for Brisbane Lions star
Brisbane's Jarrod Berry has suffered a 'diabolical' injury in a sad finish to the club's massive win over the Dockers on Friday night. The Lions secured a spot in the finals with a commanding 57-point win at Optus Stadium, but it has come at a cost with key midfielder Berry's return from a shoulder injury now a mystery. Join now and get your first month for just $1. Berry suffered a dislocated shoulder injury when he was shoved in the back by Andrew Brayshaw in the final quarter. The 27-year-old was clearly not expecting contact as a loose ball bounced towards him before Brayshaw cannoned into his back. You can watch the incident in the video player above. The contact sent Berry falling forwards where he put both hands out to brace for the impact of falling onto the turf. That impact was enough to force Berry's left upper arm bone to be dislodged from its shoulder socket. He was in obvious pain as he was helped from the field by medical officials with his shoulder looking all messed up. He was immediately subbed out of the game. Leading footy reporter Jon Ralph on Fox Footy called it 'diabolical for Jarrod Berry'. 'Not only given his injury history, but his importance to this side as a defensive midfielder,' the Code Sports journalist said. 'So it's a shoulder dislocation. Certainly, Brayshaw did nothing wrong apart from just tipping him forward there. '(But Berry) has had repeated shoulder surgeries all the way back through his draft year, and as recently as February last year. 'The only real option here is to try and strengthen it, which has limited success over the next three weeks. 'But those dislocations, they just re-occur so easily ... You only have to look at (Lions ruck) Oscar McInerney who (dislocated his shoulder in last year's preliminary final but tried to keep playing) and then missed the grand finals. 'So that is a horrible, horrible injury (for Berry) and he will know that the road ahead is very full of pitfalls.' Lions coach Chris Fagan said the injury 'didn't look good' during his post-match press conference. 'His other shoulder is the one he's had operated on,' Fagan said after the game. 'So now the other one's popped out. I don't know the full extent. Obviously, there'll be scans and stuff like that. It didn't look good. 'But sometimes they can find a way to strap them up and get them through the season and have an operation at the end of the year. 'It's not ideal. He's been one of our better players this year, very reliable leader. So fingers crossed for him.' The AFL has not announced its match review verdict from Friday night's matches but it is possible Brayshaw may be cited for the reckless contact. The win means the Lions have qualified for seven consecutive finals series.
