Celebrities are ditching the Hamptons for remote hidden gem
Celebrities sick of spending their downtime in the Hamptons have been hiding away in luxurious yet discreet towns.
For years, the Hamptons has been an iconic getaway spot of Hollywood A-listers and wealthy New Yorkers desperate for a break from hectic city life.
But as the cluster of Suffolk County seaside communities became more popular and overcrowded, Hamptonites have started turning their heads toward Dutchess County - specifically Rhinebeck and Millbrook.
Within the confines of these scenic, calm and quiet neighborhoods, big names like Paul Rudd and Steven Spielberg blend in with everyone else - giving stars the break from the limelight they are often looking for.
'I think the thing is here, there's no paparazzi. No snapping photos and stuff,' Patrick Amedeo, the owner of Rhinebeck's Pizzeria Posto - which has seen its fair share of stars come through its doors - told the Daily Mail.
'I think they like that so they can come here with their families and relax. They can hide a little and then still enjoy the life here.'
In 2021, Pizzeria Posto employees half-jokingly told Dave Portnoy Rhinebeck was the 'new Hamptons' while the Barstool founder reviewed their pizza.
But with well-off seasonal residents, who flock in for summertime activities, and no shortage of a celebrity presence, mid-Hudson Valley realtor Byron Anderson said this title is not far off.
'That's all our market in the Mid-Hudson Valley. Yeah, lots of actors, musicians, artists, producers, music producers call this area home,' the Millbrook-based real estate agent told the Daily Mail.
The laid-back lifestyle, charming local businesses and jaw-dropping landscapes is what draws not only famous people, but well-off families from all over, to the Dutchess County gems.
'We have tons of buyers who've done the Hamptons - who are tired of the Hamptons for obvious reasons,' Anderson said of the Millbrook area.
'They're looking for quiet, serenity, and we have that in abundance. The Hamptons, it's wonderful, you're at the beach, it's beautiful. But houses are sort of on top of each other.'
Millbrook, a town 90 miles away from New York City with a population just above 1,400 people, has been long considered the 'lowkey' version of the Hamptons.
The area is best known for its ritzy lifestyle options and rich history. It has small town feel - far quieter than the Hamptons.
There is also a vibrant equestrian scene in the neighborhood, adding to the area's charm.
'It's just an easier quality of life. Some of the more sophisticated and some of the wealthiest [buyers] are looking for large parcels of land with natural resources...you simply can't get that in the Hamptons.'
Most famously, husband and wife actors Liam Neeson (pictured) and the late Natasha Richardson lived in a jaw-dropping mansion in Millbrook, which was surrounded by lush green grass and shrubs, and had a vast lake on the property
Anderson, who often visits the Hamptons himself with his family, said his clientele consists mainly of New Yorkers seeking out an oasis from high-stress city life.
But he has recently noticed more buyers flocking in from Florida and Connecticut, looking for a second - or third or fourth - home.
'We have a lot of back and forth from Palm Beach and quite a bit from Greenwich or surrounding towns,' he explained.
'Mostly because they've gotten a taste of a quasi-country lifestyle, but they're seeking a little bit more.'
A decent portion of buyers are 'weekenders' - or people who work all week in the city and visit their homes in Millbrook, Rhinebeck or the gorgeous tiny towns sprinkled in between on the weekends.
He also said he sees many families splitting their time between their properties.
'In Millbrook, there's one school in particular school called the Duchess Day School, enrollment has gone way up in the last few years,' he added.
'That was mostly COVID-driven, but it's largely remained at the new size. So most of those people, we kind of thought, 'well, when this is over, they'll go back to the city,' but no, they've kept their kids in school here.'
Amadeo revealed he has noticed an increase in international tourism, with people traveling from as far as Japan coming into his pizzeria.
Both Amadeo and Anderson pointed out that Millbrook and Rhinebeck are star magnets.
On Instagram, Amadeo has shared several snaps of the high-profile individuals who simply waltzed into his business for a bite to eat without a fuss.
These prominent figures, including Robert Funaro and Joe Caniano from The Sopranos; and Severance star John Turturro.
Rattling off additional names, Amedeo said Spielberg has dropped in a few times for a meal, as well as actor John De Toro.
He's also gotten friendly with Rudd, arguably Rhinebeck's most famous resident, who co-owns a neighborhood candy shop with Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
For its classic sweets and celebrity ownership, Samuel's Sweet Shop has become a Rhinebeck staple.
Rhinebeck, about 100 miles out from New York City, is home to about 2,500 residents.
Amedeo described the town as having 'more action' than its popular counterpart Millbrook.
Millbrook has long been a celebrity hideaway, with legendary actress Mary Tyler Moore once owning an 85-acre bucolic retreat in the Hudson Valley town.
Journalist Katie Couric resided in the picturesque village, known for horse riding and its alluring downtown, and raised her two daughters there, local radio station 101.5 WPDH reported.
Most famously, husband and wife actors Liam Neeson and the late Natasha Richardson lived in a jaw-dropping mansion, which was surrounded by lush green grass and shrubs, and had a vast lake on the property.
Both Rhinebeck and Millbrook are deep rooted in their history, with one Rhinebeck's oldest hotels - Beekman Arms and Delamater Inn - still up and running with its original allure.
'We have noticed that more people are interested in the history of the Hudson Valley,' Nicole Coulon, a manager at the inn, told the Daily Mail.
'A lot of our guests want to be immersed in the rich history the Village of Rhinebeck has to offer.'
The Mid-Hudson Valley appeals to affluent buyers for the peace and space the Hamptons cannot offer.
Realtor Anderson said there are properties on the market with up to 2,000 acres of land.
'If you're looking at the same price point, what that gets you in the Hamptons is a very large house on a very small piece of property,' he elaborated.
'Try to find something in the Hamptons for one or $2 million, very, very difficult.
The Hamptons have seen a population boom over the years - in East Hampton and Southampton, the Hamptons' most popular areas, the population shot up 20 percent from 2010 to 2020.
Millbrook only has just over 1,400 residents and Rhinebeck has roughly 2,600 people - a stark contrast from the 97,421 people swarming the Hamptons' 50-mile stretch.
'For one to $2 million here, you can find a lovely home on 10 or 15 acres. For five or 10 million, you can find a really fantastic home on 30 to 100 acres.'
He clarified Millbrook, Rhinebeck and other towns like Pine Plains, Clinton Corners and Stanfordville are simply calmer and more charming, more suited for people really looking for a break.
'East Hampton, for example, it's lovely, but it's kind of like Madison Avenue at the beach.
'You have Ralph Lauren and Laura Piana and Restoration Hardware and these great stores, but you're going from Soho or Meatpacking District or Madison Avenue, and having the same exact amenities.
'There at the beach, it doesn't really feel like a reset to me.'
As the Hamptons becomes increasingly trendy, swapping out the beach for the lakes, rivers and rolling hills of Dutchess County has seemed like the ideal decision for the elite.
'It's just a different quality of life... It's truly idyllic,' Anderson said.

Beach Boys' Mike Love says he feels late bandmate Brian Wilson's 'presence' as he's inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame just one day after his friend's death
Beach Boys' Mike Love said he felt the 'presence' of his Brian Wilson when he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on Thursday just one day after his death. Brian passed away on Wednesday aged 82 after being diagnosed with a neurocognitive disorder similar to dementia. Attending the ceremony in New York, Mike was inducted by John Stamos and paid tribute to his cousin and 'brother in music.' Accepting his honour on stage, he admitted: 'I do feel his presence.' 'I especially must thank my cousin Brian Wilson. My first cousin by blood but brother in music, together we set the stage for some of the most successful music collaborations of all time,' The Hollywood Reporter states. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. John said of Mike: 'He made the whole world want to be us: sun-kissed, carefree, full of promise. 'His lyrics were cinematic. What's a song without a hook? What's a hook without a picture in your head or a memory in your heart? Mike Love knows how to write that song.' Mike performed Beach Boys classic, California Girls as well as I Get Around, Kokomo and Good Vibrations. Brian shot to fame as the frontman of the Beach Boys, for which he served as the principal songwriter as well as the co-lead vocalist. Last year, weeks after the death of his longtime wife Melinda, it emerged that he had been diagnosed with a neurocognitive disorder similar to dementia. Brian's children announced his death on his official Instagram page this Wednesday, alongside what appeared to be a recent photo. 'We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. We are at a loss for words right now,' they wrote. 'Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy.' Brian formed the Beach Boys in 1961 with his brothers Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and their friend Al Jardine. The original name of the band was the Pendletones, and they exploded onto the scene with their 1961 song Surfin', written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love. Over the course of the 1960s the group became one of the most beloved in America, releasing albums like Surfin' Safari, Surfin' U.S.A. and Surfer Girl. Their 1966 hit God Only Knows was branded 'the greatest song ever written' by Beatles legend Paul McCartney. Along with their pioneering musical style, the band also conjured up an intoxicating image of a carefree California lifestyle of sunshine, palm trees and sea air. However Wilson's involvement with the Beach Boys shifted dramatically when he suffered a nervous breakdown in 1964, followed by two more in the next couple of years. He promptly withdrew from touring but retained his backstage control of the band as a writer and producer, masterminding their 1966 magnum opus Pet Sounds and providing lead vocals on many of the tracks. Pet Sounds struggled commercially at first, but ultimately earned a reputation as one of the most acclaimed pop albums ever created. Paul McCartney has cited Pet Sounds as a particularly profound influence on him, one that spurred him to write more experimentally for the Beatles, leading to their own seminal album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. 'First of all, it was Brian's writing,' said McCartney in 1990. 'I love the album so much. I've just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life - I figure no one is educated musically 'til they've heard that album. I was into the writing and the songs.' Wilson plunged into heavy drug use during the 1960s, including LSD, and the combination of his mounting substance problem and psychological issues like schizoaffective disorder contributed to his increasing retreat from public life. One of his symptoms was paranoid delusions, and he continued hearing voices in his head during the last decades of his life. On the other hand, the psychedelics also served as creative fuel, with Wilson reportedly composing the music for one of the Beach Boys' most enduring singles, the 1966 release Good Vibrations, while tripping on LSD.

Clinton aide Huma Abedin weds billionaire Soros heir in lavish Hamptons ceremony as Mother Nature weighs in on nuptials
Former Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin was all smiles despite the rainy weather as she wed the heir of billionaire philanthropist George Soros today at a lavish Hamptons celebration attended by at least one ex president and other Democrat A-listers. The bride, 49, looked radiant in an elegant off-the-shoulder, floor-length cream gown with buttons in the back as she wed financier scion Alex Soros, 39, exclusive pictures show. The custom dress by Givenchy featured a delicate belt and olive branch embroidery with the bride and groom's initials sweetly woven into the design, according to Vogue magazine, which had a deal to cover the nuptials. The gown made by Sarah Burton was one of two dresses Abedin wore for her nuptials, with the other designed by Erdem Moralıoğlu. Our exclusive photos show Democrat insider Abedin looking relaxed and happy as she greeted famous guests – which included Vogue editor Anna Wintour - at the Soros' sprawling 12-bedroom Hamptons estate in Water Mill. Abedin was closely accompanied by her son, whom she shares with disgraced politician, Anthony Weiner, 60, who she divorced after he was jailed for sexting a minor. Weiner, who is attempting a NYC political comeback with a city council run, is not thought to have attended the wedding. The Soros' 12-bedroom, 10-bathroom Georgian mega mansion was surrounded by tight security, including sniffer dogs and Secret Service agents guarding Abedin's former boss Hillary and ex-president Bill who were driven down the long driveway in a motorcade of blacked out SUVs. Former president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle were also on the guest-list, according to Page Six. George and Amal Clooney, and the fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg and her husband, the media mogul Barry Diller, were also thought to have been among the high-profile attendees. Scores of blacked out chauffeur driven minivans and luxury cars queued to ferry the couple's well-heeled guests through the estate's main gate. Huge white tents were erected on the property, giving guests shelter from the almost constant rain and cold that threatened to overshadow the couple's special day. But not everyone was in a celebratory mood for the nuptials. Locals claimed residents were not told in advance about the large-scale event, which saw police drafted in to manage the backlogs of traffic that built up along the road. One woman, who did not want to be named, criticized the family as 'the worst kind' of 'limousine liberals', and accused them of being hypocritical in funding apparently anti-police initiatives while local cops handled their wedding traffic outside. In a bizarre moment, a group of college students in fancy dress arrived close to the front gate of the property and took a selfie. On Friday, the happy couple hosted a rehearsal dinner for dozens of family members and friends at the waterfront estate of Soros' mother, Susan Weber, on Shelter Island, in the exclusive enclave of Dering Harbor. The Mail's exclusive pictures showed Abedin dazzling in a mid-length champagne-colored dress with flutter sleeves and matching heeled sandals as she mingled with guests. The groom-to-be complimented his bride in a light brown suit with matching shoes. Soros boasts an impressive portfolio of at least 11 homes, including two in the Hamptons, and another in Katonah, an exclusive area in Westchester, New York. The famously private philanthropist, reportedly worth $25billion, has transferred a raft of properties to the names of his closest advisers over the years. It is understood many guests are being ferried to the wedding from upmarket hotels in nearby Bridgehampton in a fleet of chauffeur blacked-out minivans. Guests were said to be in good spirits and some even joked whether any Republicans would be invited to the Dem society wedding. Soros and his father are among the most prolific fundraisers in the Democratic Party. Soros has been named heir to his father's $25billion empire. Abedin was one of Clinton's top aides in her tenure as Secretary of State during President Obama's first term. She hit the headlines when it was revealed her husband, then a Democratic US Congressman from New York had texted nude pictures to young women. Weiner resigned his post but ran again in 2013 when again he was found to have sexted pictures. Abedin divorced him and he was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison and he had to register as a sex offender. Abedin and Soros met in the fall of 2023 at Nicky Hilton's birthday party, and they were engaged in New York City in May 2024.

Kim Kardashian goes topless in racy NYC hotel room photos after ex Kanye West crashed Diddy trial
Kim Kardashian tantalized her 356 million Instagram followers on Saturday as she shared bits of sexy new content. The 44-year-old entrepreneur went topless in two racy posts featuring grainy VHS footage captured by video creator Indiana, who she has worked with before. Kim stripped off while posing seductively in a hotel room bed and showing off her famous hourglass figure. She teased in the caption, '2am nyc time,' as her fans cheekily referenced the similarity between the new posts and her infamous 2007 sex tape with ex-boyfriend Ray J. 'It reminded me of an era,' one person wrote in the comments. Kardashian's latest posts come after her controversial ex-husband Kanye West, 48, appeared at Diddy 's ongoing sex trafficking and racketeering trial on Friday in New York City. Kim covered up slightly in some outtakes, sporting a black Chrome Hearts bikini top and boxer shorts. Another variation of her look saw the SKIMS mogul don a striped, button-up men's shirt. To match her pinup look, Kim sported heavy makeup that included smokey, dark eyeshadow, blush, and ultra-glossy lips. Her video post was soundtracked to Aerosmith's 1993 ballad Crazy. The mother-of-four — who shares North, 12 on Sunday, Saint, nine, Chicago, seven, and Psalm, six, with Kanye — wore her long raven locks in an off-center part with flirty volume for a tousled bedhead look. She also made it a point to zoom in on her layers of Chrome Hearts jewelry as she piled on silver chain necklaces with the brand's recognizable cross logo. Kanye and Kim were married from 2014 until the television star filed for divorce in February 2021. It was finalized in 2022. The Chicago-bred rapper-turned-designer stunned the ongoing trial for Shawn 'Diddy' Combs as he showed up to support the disgraced music mogul on Friday, hugging his son in a show of solidarity.
