Celebrities are ditching the Hamptons for remote hidden gem

Daily Mail14-06-2025
Celebrities sick of spending their downtime in the Hamptons have been hiding away in luxurious yet discreet towns.
For years, the Hamptons has been an iconic getaway spot of Hollywood A-listers and wealthy New Yorkers desperate for a break from hectic city life.
But as the cluster of Suffolk County seaside communities became more popular and overcrowded, Hamptonites have started turning their heads toward Dutchess County - specifically Rhinebeck and Millbrook.
Within the confines of these scenic, calm and quiet neighborhoods, big names like Paul Rudd and Steven Spielberg blend in with everyone else - giving stars the break from the limelight they are often looking for.
'I think the thing is here, there's no paparazzi. No snapping photos and stuff,' Patrick Amedeo, the owner of Rhinebeck's Pizzeria Posto - which has seen its fair share of stars come through its doors - told the Daily Mail.
'I think they like that so they can come here with their families and relax. They can hide a little and then still enjoy the life here.'
In 2021, Pizzeria Posto employees half-jokingly told Dave Portnoy Rhinebeck was the 'new Hamptons' while the Barstool founder reviewed their pizza.
But with well-off seasonal residents, who flock in for summertime activities, and no shortage of a celebrity presence, mid-Hudson Valley realtor Byron Anderson said this title is not far off.
'That's all our market in the Mid-Hudson Valley. Yeah, lots of actors, musicians, artists, producers, music producers call this area home,' the Millbrook-based real estate agent told the Daily Mail.
The laid-back lifestyle, charming local businesses and jaw-dropping landscapes is what draws not only famous people, but well-off families from all over, to the Dutchess County gems.
'We have tons of buyers who've done the Hamptons - who are tired of the Hamptons for obvious reasons,' Anderson said of the Millbrook area.
'They're looking for quiet, serenity, and we have that in abundance. The Hamptons, it's wonderful, you're at the beach, it's beautiful. But houses are sort of on top of each other.'
Millbrook, a town 90 miles away from New York City with a population just above 1,400 people, has been long considered the 'lowkey' version of the Hamptons.
The area is best known for its ritzy lifestyle options and rich history. It has small town feel - far quieter than the Hamptons.
There is also a vibrant equestrian scene in the neighborhood, adding to the area's charm.
'It's just an easier quality of life. Some of the more sophisticated and some of the wealthiest [buyers] are looking for large parcels of land with natural resources...you simply can't get that in the Hamptons.'
Most famously, husband and wife actors Liam Neeson (pictured) and the late Natasha Richardson lived in a jaw-dropping mansion in Millbrook, which was surrounded by lush green grass and shrubs, and had a vast lake on the property
Anderson, who often visits the Hamptons himself with his family, said his clientele consists mainly of New Yorkers seeking out an oasis from high-stress city life.
But he has recently noticed more buyers flocking in from Florida and Connecticut, looking for a second - or third or fourth - home.
'We have a lot of back and forth from Palm Beach and quite a bit from Greenwich or surrounding towns,' he explained.
'Mostly because they've gotten a taste of a quasi-country lifestyle, but they're seeking a little bit more.'
A decent portion of buyers are 'weekenders' - or people who work all week in the city and visit their homes in Millbrook, Rhinebeck or the gorgeous tiny towns sprinkled in between on the weekends.
He also said he sees many families splitting their time between their properties.
'In Millbrook, there's one school in particular school called the Duchess Day School, enrollment has gone way up in the last few years,' he added.
'That was mostly COVID-driven, but it's largely remained at the new size. So most of those people, we kind of thought, 'well, when this is over, they'll go back to the city,' but no, they've kept their kids in school here.'
Amadeo revealed he has noticed an increase in international tourism, with people traveling from as far as Japan coming into his pizzeria.
Both Amadeo and Anderson pointed out that Millbrook and Rhinebeck are star magnets.
On Instagram, Amadeo has shared several snaps of the high-profile individuals who simply waltzed into his business for a bite to eat without a fuss.
These prominent figures, including Robert Funaro and Joe Caniano from The Sopranos; and Severance star John Turturro.
Rattling off additional names, Amedeo said Spielberg has dropped in a few times for a meal, as well as actor John De Toro.
He's also gotten friendly with Rudd, arguably Rhinebeck's most famous resident, who co-owns a neighborhood candy shop with Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
For its classic sweets and celebrity ownership, Samuel's Sweet Shop has become a Rhinebeck staple.
Rhinebeck, about 100 miles out from New York City, is home to about 2,500 residents.
Amedeo described the town as having 'more action' than its popular counterpart Millbrook.
Millbrook has long been a celebrity hideaway, with legendary actress Mary Tyler Moore once owning an 85-acre bucolic retreat in the Hudson Valley town.
Journalist Katie Couric resided in the picturesque village, known for horse riding and its alluring downtown, and raised her two daughters there, local radio station 101.5 WPDH reported.
Most famously, husband and wife actors Liam Neeson and the late Natasha Richardson lived in a jaw-dropping mansion, which was surrounded by lush green grass and shrubs, and had a vast lake on the property.
Both Rhinebeck and Millbrook are deep rooted in their history, with one Rhinebeck's oldest hotels - Beekman Arms and Delamater Inn - still up and running with its original allure.
'We have noticed that more people are interested in the history of the Hudson Valley,' Nicole Coulon, a manager at the inn, told the Daily Mail.
'A lot of our guests want to be immersed in the rich history the Village of Rhinebeck has to offer.'
The Mid-Hudson Valley appeals to affluent buyers for the peace and space the Hamptons cannot offer.
Realtor Anderson said there are properties on the market with up to 2,000 acres of land.
'If you're looking at the same price point, what that gets you in the Hamptons is a very large house on a very small piece of property,' he elaborated.
'Try to find something in the Hamptons for one or $2 million, very, very difficult.
The Hamptons have seen a population boom over the years - in East Hampton and Southampton, the Hamptons' most popular areas, the population shot up 20 percent from 2010 to 2020.
Millbrook only has just over 1,400 residents and Rhinebeck has roughly 2,600 people - a stark contrast from the 97,421 people swarming the Hamptons' 50-mile stretch.
'For one to $2 million here, you can find a lovely home on 10 or 15 acres. For five or 10 million, you can find a really fantastic home on 30 to 100 acres.'
He clarified Millbrook, Rhinebeck and other towns like Pine Plains, Clinton Corners and Stanfordville are simply calmer and more charming, more suited for people really looking for a break.
'East Hampton, for example, it's lovely, but it's kind of like Madison Avenue at the beach.
'You have Ralph Lauren and Laura Piana and Restoration Hardware and these great stores, but you're going from Soho or Meatpacking District or Madison Avenue, and having the same exact amenities.
'There at the beach, it doesn't really feel like a reset to me.'
As the Hamptons becomes increasingly trendy, swapping out the beach for the lakes, rivers and rolling hills of Dutchess County has seemed like the ideal decision for the elite.
'It's just a different quality of life... It's truly idyllic,' Anderson said.

Nicola Peltz wears her mother's vintage wedding dress in secret vow renewal ceremony officiated by her father Nelson... while David and Victoria remain thousands of miles away on yacht amid feud

Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz have shared pictures of their secret vow renewal ceremony officiated by her father Nelson, and while Brooklyn's parents were very much absent amid their feud, Nicola's parents had very key roles. When billionaire Nelson, 83, took centre stage at the big day which was held on his estate on August 2 in Westchester County, Brooklyn's parents were nowhere to be seen. Brooklyn and Nicola first tied the knot in a lavish £3million ceremony in 2022, when relations first began to sour with his parents in the run up to the big day. After shunning a dress made by her fashion designer Victoria in favour of a Valentino gown in 2022 - a choice which wasn't well received - Nicola once again snubbed her mother-in-law and wore her mother Claudia's, 70, 1985 vintage bridal gown. It is a poignant message to Posh and Becks', whom he and Nicola have grown increasingly estranged over recent months after failing to attend any of his father's 50th birthday celebrations in May. This time round, Nicola opted for another bridal style gown which had flower embellishments on the shoulder and puff sleeves, with a matching veil. All the while the Beckhams were said to be upset by the Peltzes in 2022 who they felt were taking over the wedding. The couple shared the images on Instagram on Monday, alongside the words 'only love.' Nicola wore the same original $1.8mill ring set adding a glinting filter onto the dazzling jewels. They also shared a video of their very casual proposal on TikTok alongside a song by Ysabelle Cuevas alongside the words: 'Lost in your eyes..' Brooklyn described the vow renewal as a 'really beautiful experience' while admitting he is still head-over-heels for his wife. Speaking for the first time about the day, the 26-year-old admitted he'd happily do it 'every single day' if he could. Brooklyn said the moment was all about creating a 'really cute memory' they'd treasure forever. Nicola was by his side as they exchanged longer vows than their original wedding, a detail Brooklyn confessed may cause a problem for his already inked tribute. The pair began dating back in October 2019, went Instagram official a few months later, and by July 2020, Brooklyn had popped the question (their engagement post pictured) Speaking to People he said: 'It was beautiful. We just wanted a really beautiful experience - a really cute memory. 'To be honest, I could renew my vows every single day with her. I think the most important thing that someone can do is find that person that they're going to spend the rest of their life with. 'It definitely shapes you as a person. It was really, really cute. It was really fun.' The eldest Beckham has his first set of vows tattooed on his arm and now admits he'll have to 'find space' for the new ones. The ceremony was a far cry from their first glitzy bash, with the couple opting for a smaller, more personal event surrounded by their four dogs. Far from being a party-loving celeb couple, Brooklyn says their favourite nights are spent at home, sipping wine and cooking together. The pair began dating back in October 2019, went Instagram official a few months later, and by July 2020, Brooklyn had popped the question. In another turn of events, the son of David and Victoria Beckham said he is keen to remind fans not to stress over life timelines, revealing that he didn't discover his career passion until his early twenties and now he's the proud owner of hot sauce brand Cloud23. The former footballer and Spice Girl enjoyed a spot of reading while topping up their tans after he was caught cheekily pinching her bottom The ceremony was a far cry from their first glitzy bash, with the couple opting for a smaller, more personal event surrounded by their four dogs Brooklyn added that Nicola played a major role in his business journey, pushing him to pursue food after he confessed he wasn't sure what career path to take. It all started, he admitted, after 'getting really drunk one night' and experimenting with making hot sauce in their kitchen. That tipsy trial run turned into a full-blown business, with Brooklyn spotting a gap in the market for high-end hot sauces with clean ingredients. Two flavours - Hot Habanero and Sweet Jalapeño - are now on sale and both featured in his recent Airbnb Originals Experience event in Los Angeles. Guests at the party were served spicy pickle martinis infused with his sauce before learning how to whip up chimichurri from celebrity chef Aaron May. Brooklyn revealed that cooking is his 'favourite thing', whether it's for Nicola, friends, or even the couple's beloved pets. His go-to dish is spaghetti bolognese - but with a twist - a whole bottle of red wine and a cork thrown into the pot for good luck. Brooklyn said: 'I add a whole bottle of red wine. The cheapest red wine is always the best for bolognese. I actually put 10 bay leaves in there.' He added: 'I don't know where I learned this, but I put the cork of the wine in the pot. I don't think it does anything. Then, I just marinate it for five hours.' And when he's entertaining, Brooklyn confessed candles, good music, and low lighting are his non-negotiable. Brooklyn's parents David and Victoria have been enjoying their annual summer break on their £16 million yacht in Europe. But he and Nicola have kept away amid an ongoing family feud, as the pair lived it up on a £85million vessel that dwarfs his parents' close by the week before. The family has been thrown into turmoil in recent months as it has been claimed Brooklyn has become increasingly estranged from his famous parents after failing to attend any of his father David's 50th birthday celebrations in May. It was also revealed that Brooklyn and Nicola's Instagram accounts no longer follow his younger brothers in the latest family drama. However, Brooklyn's friends told Daily Mail that Cruz and Romeo have actually blocked them on the social media platform. This would make sense given that Brooklyn and Nicola are still following Victoria and David. Brooklyn also didn't wish either his mum Victoria or dad David a happy birthday on social media - an unusual move for the Beckhams, who are known for their loving posts. This is in stark contrast to a post Brooklyn shared recently for his father-in-law and wrote on a picture of himself and Nicola with the billionaire: 'Happy birthday Nelson x We love you.'

Even liberal John Oliver is growing tired of Chuck Schumer's eyebrow-raising anti-Republican antics

Liberal late-night TV host John Oliver didn't hold back in his recent roast of a top elected leader in the Democrat party. Oliver called out New York Senator Chuck Schumer for his decades-long charade of pointing to two fake right-leaning voters numerous times over the course of his political career. The duo is allegedly a middle-class pair from Massapequa, New York, who have been fiscally concerned but socially moderate. 'Schumer first introduced the world to the Baileys in his 2007 book, Positively American, winning back the middle-class majority, one family at a time,' Oliver said. 'In it, he mentions the Baileys, an astonishing 265 times in 264 pages. He's apparently been talking about them for years before the book was published.' The host doubled down on his revelation that the Baileys are just figments of Schumer's imagination. 'They don't exist.' Oliver continued in his monologue. 'Seriously, he invented them,' the comedian stated, mocking the senator further before adding: 'That is a J.R.R. Tolkien-level of gratuitous backstory, and I don't say that lightly.' Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, speaks during a press conference after weekly Senate caucus luncheons at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 The show then cut to a sketch with two new characters, supposed to be the real-life version of Schumer's fictional Baileys. 'We're Republicans, Chuck. We're super Republican,' the actors claimed, they were revealed to have both voted for President Trump, Joe thrice, and Eileen twice. Oliver's producers then doubled down on their portrayal of grotesque Republican stereotypes. 'I think they're putting litter boxes in schools,' Joe says, before his wife Eileen responded: 'Every time a celebrity dies, I tweet, vaxxed.' The fictional duo then continued: 'I take Ivermectin, every day, out of spite,' rail against store clerks who 'don't say Merry Christmas, even in June,' and demand, 'Where's my straight pride parade?' At the end of the segment, the pair notes: 'Our own kids don't even speak to us, Chuck. You shouldn't either.' A representative for Schumer did not immediately reply to the Daily Mail's request for comment. Despite his formal position as Minority Leader of the United States Senate, Schumer isn't immensely popular, both among his own constituents and the general public. A Sienna College Poll released Tuesday found that only 39 percent of Schumer's constituents had a favorable view of the lawmaker. Forty-six percent of respondents had a negative view of the Senator. The top Senate Democrat ranked 26th out of 29 high-profile Democrats on the latest DailyMail+ Power List released Tuesday. Based on exclusive polling, the Mail's Power List captures public sentiment around likeability, trustworthiness, perceived bias, and knowledge among key figures. The data reveals who Americans like and trust and who they don't, and the verdict is as damning as it is surprising. The top five names on the list were all celebrities. Schumer's Senate colleague and Vermont Independent Bernie Sanders took the spot of the top elected official on the list at number six, with Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman coming seventh right behind Sanders. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker also appeared on the list ahead of Schumer, raking in ninth place. Last month, DailyMail+ launched the Power List by revealing the best-loved (and most loathed) morning-show hosts and news media stars. We also ranked the sports analysts who divide the opinion of millions of fans across the country and revealed the nation's most beloved NFL quarterback.
