Tengku Zafrul thanks Umno comrades, affirms decision to join PKR
SEPANG: Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz expressed his appreciation to his comrades in Umno, but affirmed his decision to move to PKR.
Speaking to Bernama here on Saturday (May 31), he stressed that his decision to leave Umno and resolve to join PKR was made after deep consideration and entirely of his own volition, without coercion or influence from any party.
"This was not an easy decision, but I have thought it through carefully. I appreciate those who respect my right as an individual to choose my political path.
"I would like to thank the Umno president (Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi), as well as friends and Umno members who have helped, supported, and encouraged me throughout my time in the party,' he said when met at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) before departing for the Holy Land to perform the Haj.
He also asked to be given space to fully focus on the pilgrimage with his family, while apologising for any shortcomings with various parties.
"God willing, I will pray for the well-being of the country and the prosperity of all Malaysians while I am in the Holy Land,' he added.
When asked about calls from certain quarters for him to resign as minister, given the post was allocated under Umno's quota, Tengku Zafrul said: "I would like to focus on my pilgrimage, and I leave the matter entirely to the wisdom of the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) and the Umno president.'
On Friday (May 30), Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation as an Umno supreme council member, Kota Raja division chief, and an Umno member to join PKR.
His decision, however, has drawn various reactions, including from Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman, who urged that Umno's quota of seven ministerial posts be reinstated following Tengku Zafrul's resignation from the party.
Ahmad Zahid confirmed that Umno executive secretary Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan had received the official resignation letter from Tengku Zafrul.
However, PKR secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh said earlier that the party had yet to receive any official membership application from Tengku Zafrul.- Bernama

The lower chamber of parliament cleared the bill to revise a law on tackling gambling addiction by a majority vote. GRS to Bung: Don't play victim, we don't need you
Joniston KOTA KINABALU (June 3): Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) information chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai has fired back at Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, calling his latest remarks arrogant and disconnected from Sabah's political reality. 'Bung is the last person who should talk about loyalty or sincerity. He tried to bring down the very government he was part of, just to serve his own ambition. That speaks volumes,' he said. Joniston dismissed Bung's claim that GRS had betrayed Barisan Nasional (BN), describing it as a clear attempt to twist the narrative and deflect from his own actions. 'It's Bung who conspired with Warisan and PKDM in January 2023 to topple the government led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. 'He wasn't betrayed, he was the one doing the betraying. Even while sitting in the State Cabinet, he had no respect for his colleagues in the State government led by Hajiji as Chief Minister.' Joniston stressed that GRS has never been reliant on Umno and is fully prepared to face the upcoming state election independently. As such Bung should stop with his arrogance by insinuating as if GRS is so hard up to work with Umno-BN. He also pointed out that during the political crisis, several Umno assemblymen refused to support Bung's move and instead threw their backing behind Hajiji, alongside PH. 'If anyone needs to reflect, it's Bung. Why did even your own colleagues abandon your 'Langkah Kinabalu'? Why did PH support Hajiji, not you? The answer is obvious because the trust wasn't with you,' he said. Joniston, who is also PBS information chief, reiterated that his party would never forget the insult hurled by Bung when he once labelled PBS as 'melukut di tepi gantang'. 'You showed no respect for PBS or your allies, and now you expect cooperation? Don't be surprised if Sabahans continue to reject Umno just like they did in other states across the Peninsula. 'Sabah isn't your political lifeline. Don't treat this state like your fallback plan,' he said, stressing that GRS is now focused on what matters – unity, stability and delivering for the people.

Indonesia submits key document in bid to join Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development
JAKARTA (Bernama) -- Indonesia has formally submitted its Initial Memorandum to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), one year after the country received its accession roadmap at the 2024 Ministerial Council Meeting (MCM). Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto led the country's delegation to Paris from June 2 to 5 to attend the OECD MCM, the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday. Airlangga, who heads the country's OECD Accession National Team, handed over the document to OECD secretary-general Matthias Cormann on Monday, marking a major milestone in its bid to join the 38-member bloc. "The completion of the Initial Memorandum within one year reflects our strong national commitment to OECD accession,' he said, while acknowledging that the path ahead remains "a long marathon' requiring continued engagement with OECD committees. According to the ministry, the Initial Memorandum outlines Indonesia's self-assessment of its compliance with OECD standards across 32 chapters and 240 legal instruments. Its drafting involved 64 ministries and agencies across 26 sectors and eight cross-sectoral areas, under Presidential Decree No. 17/2024 and Ministerial Decree No. 232/2024, the ministry added. The OECD, founded in 1961 and headquartered in Paris, provides a platform for member countries to develop evidence-based policies, share best practices and address global economic, social, and environmental challenges. - Bernama
