City police expands jurisdiction with addition of three stations
The decision, formalised through a government order on February 6, comes as these regions have experienced increased urbanisation and a shift in the nature of criminal activity. Until now, the stations operated under district-level administration, but with the jurisdictional change, the Circle Police Inspectors (CPCs) and Police Sub-Inspectors (PSIs) of these stations will be realigned under the city limits.
To ensure a smooth transition, officers from Bengaluru and Ramanagara districts will work on an Out-of-District (OOD) basis for one month before full administrative control is transferred to the city police.
Additionally, there are ongoing discussions about integrating urbanized areas of Madanayakanahalli and Vishwanathpura police stations—currently part of Bengaluru Rural district—into the Bengaluru City Police structure.
Political and departmental lobbying has also surfaced, pushing for more stations to be merged into the city limits. Areas under consideration include Vijayapura and Rajanukunte in the north, Bannerghatta, Jigani, Surya Nagar, and Sarjapur in the south and southeast. These regions are rapidly urbanising, with local bodies like Sarjapur and Jigani also being considered for inclusion under the Greater Bengaluru Administration Bill, 2024. However, sources confirm that no formal proposal has yet been submitted regarding these additional stations.

School unification policy: Kerala teachers' unions divided over referendum
Only four teachers' organisations on Tuesday expressed support for the government decision to hold a referendum with the aim of regulating the unions as part of the school unification policy. A meeting chaired by General Education Secretary K. Vasuki was convened to hear the views of the teachers' organisations on granting them recognition as the government attempts to proceed with the school merger as per the M.A. Khader committee report. Except for the pro-CPI(M) Kerala School Teachers' Association (KSTA), pro-Congress Kerala Pradesh School Teachers' Association (KPSTA), the pro-CPI All Kerala School Teachers' Union (AKSTU), and the pro-BJP National Teachers' Union, the remaining organisations that attended the meeting opposed the referendum. There are 42 teachers' unions, including category organisations that represent a particular segment such as primary, language, sports, or higher secondary teachers. KER amendment The government is of the view that such a large number of teachers' unions is not conducive to the functioning of the education system. It maintains that only teachers' organisations representing all categories of teachers should be given recognition, while category organisations should be avoided. It is with this intention that it wants to amend the Kerala Education Rules (KER) that allows the unions to have a distinct class of teachers and have representation that is not less than 25% of the total strength of that class. It also seeks to bring unions with government teachers under the KER from the current Kerala Government Servants' Conduct Rules, 1960. Divided lot At the meeting, the KSTA said only organisations with 20% of the total teacher strength should be given recognition. It also wanted a referendum to be conducted every five or six years. The KPSTA was of the view that the top 10 unions with support of at least 10% of the teachers be granted recognition. The AKSTU stance was that a committee should decide the percentage or any other guideline for the referendum after holding discussions. Protest against referendum However, the majority of the teachers' organisations registered their protest against the referendum. The Higher Secondary School Teachers Association (HSSTA) opposed the referendum alleging that it had a preconceived agenda of denying recognition to category organisations. It also alleged a bid to strip the organisation of its freedom by trying to bring it under the KER. The Aided Higher Secondary Teachers' Association (AHSTA) said that amendment to the KER by bringing government and aided teachers together was against the systems currently in place and High Court directives. It was decided to form an umbrella organisation of teachers opposed to the referendum. The Kerala Higher Secondary Teachers Union (KHSTU) said the KER did not say anything about a referendum; it only mentioned provisions for giving them recognition or denying it. Neither did the notice for the meeting explain how teachers' organisations with small numbers could influence functioning of schools as claimed by the government.

Arms dealer Salim Pistol worked as ‘channel' between suppliers and buyers: Delhi Police
Saleem Ahmed alias Salim Pistol, an arms dealer arrested from the Indo-Nepal border, was working as a middleman between foreign firearm suppliers and buyers in Delhi and the surrounding areas, according to police investigations. Official sources said Salim was interrogated by the Delhi Police and other security agencies after being arrested by the Special Cell at the India-Nepal border last week. He has been in police custody for ten days. While staying abroad, he allegedly posed as a businessman involved in the property trade. However, he was helping suppliers of illegal firearms connect with gangsters and criminals in India, said sources. 'He acted as a conduit and often provided foreign-made pistols to gangsters. It has been stated that he was the one who supplied the Zigana pistol to the shooters who assassinated Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in Punjab,' a source said. According to the dossier on Salim prepared by the Delhi Police, he dropped out of school after Class 8 due to poverty and began working as a car driver. In 1992, he got married and has two children. In the same year, he was allegedly involved in an assault case and was booked under Section 324 of the IPC (voluntarily causing hurt on grave and sudden provocation) at the Seelampur police station. According to the dossier, this was his first recorded offence. Later, he was involved in at least nine cases related to murder, theft, robbery, and violations of the Arms Act across various police stations in northeast Delhi, up until 2018. 'To support his vices, he, along with Mukesh Gupta alias Kaka, began committing auto thefts. On April 7, 2000, the duo stole a car from Chandni Chowk using a master key and were arrested a month later. They were found driving the same vehicle with a fake number plate,' the dossier states. On August 7, 2012, he and his associates were allegedly involved in an attempted robbery of Rs 20 lakh from a house in Jafrabad. He was arrested in connection with the case in 2013 and was later released on bail. An officer said, 'Salim used to supply firearms and was a well-known arms supplier among criminals and gangsters in Delhi and neighbouring states. This is why they used to call him Salim Pistol.' Salim was last arrested in 2018 in connection with an arms supply case. 'Interrogators are now trying to ascertain his links with foreign-based arms suppliers,' the officer said. The officer added that Salim's house is located in northeast Delhi's Jafrabad area, where his wife, children, and other family members reside. However, they refused to speak to the media when approached after his arrest.

A video from Bengaluru is going viral on social media, showing a woman shouting abusive words at traffic police in broad daylight. As per media reports, the incident happened on Thursday in Yelahanka New Town and grabbed attention online, not just for the argument but also for the harsh language used against the officers. The police have now taken the woman into custody, and legal action is being taken. Routine check turns into heated exchange According to a report by the Hindustan Times, the incident started when traffic police stopped a woman on a two-wheeler and clamped her vehicle. What should have been a routine enforcement quickly turned into a loud roadside argument. The woman began shouting at the officers right away. A man, who seemed to be with her, was also at the scene, and she defended him aggressively during the confrontation. Abuses and threats captured on camera In the video that has now gone viral, the woman can be seen and heard using expletives in Hindi while confronting both a male and a female police officer. Her language was aggressive and included personal threats. Watch the video here: She yelled at a male officer, saying: 'B*******d, don't say anything to my staff. How dare you touch his t-shirt?' She then turned to the woman constable and made a disturbing threat: 'Kapde utaar ke nanga karungi tujhe' (I will strip you naked). According to the HT report, at one point, a male officer tells her, 'You are a woman, that's why we are speaking respectfully. Otherwise, the situation would have been different.' In response, the woman challenged the officers by saying they should arrest her if they had the courage. Police file case, confirm custody Later that day, the Yelahanka New Town Police confirmed that the woman had been taken into custody and an FIR had been filed. In an official statement shared on X, Bengaluru City Police said: 'On this day, 14.08.2025, regarding this incident, a case has been registered at the Yelahanka New Town Police Station, the accused have been taken into custody, and a legal investigation has been initiated against the accused. '
