RG Kar horror: Victim's mobile number allegedly accessed via WhatsApp in CBI custody
The matter came up for a hearing at a special court in Kolkata on Monday afternoon, where the counsel of the victim's parents submitted a written synopsis of his observations on the CBI probe into the matter so far and in that written submission, this particular allegation was made.
According to him, the mobile number of the victim's junior doctor was accessed through WhatsApp a few months after the tragedy when the mobile phone was in the custody of CBI and then her name was 'exited' from a WhatsApp Group where she was an erstwhile member.
Initially, the cops of Kolkata Police seized the mobile phone in the morning of August 9 last year when the victim's body was recovered from the seminar hall within the hospital premises. However, within 10 days, the city police had to hand over that mobile phone to the CBI after the central agency took charge of the investigation following an order of the Calcutta High Court.
On Monday, the counsel of the victim raised the question of how the mobile number of the victim could be accessed through WhatsApp when the mobile phone itself was in CBI custody.
As the CBI counsel argued that the victim's parents could have informed the investigating officials about their complaint, the judge of the Supreme Court advised them to do so.
In his counterargument, the counsel of the victim's parents informed the court although previously the parents had provided the central agency with information, the latter did not revert to them about the progress of investigation on the basis of that information passed down to the investigating officials.

Morbi businessman caught in web of losses, betrayal ends life
Rajkot:A 42-year-old businessman from Morbi died by suicide on Monday, allegedly after being trapped in a vicious web of financial losses and extortion, including threats of a false rape case by a woman he was in a relationship with. On the complaint lodged by deceased Ashok Padaliya's brother-in-law Prakash, the A-division police booked his partners - Amit Charola, Bhavesh Vidhja, Bipin Detroja, Manoj Sanandia, the woman Manisha Gohil and one Archit Mehta. Ashok left a suicide note naming the six. FIR states that around seven years ago, Ashok had leased a ceramics factory on Laghdirpur Road in Morbi for a monthly rent of Rs nine lakh. Amit, Bhavesh, Bipin, and Manoj joined as partners. Ashok was responsible for purchasing raw materials for the factory, while Bipin handled the accounts. Profits and losses were shared equally among the partners. When the business began incurring losses, Ashok was tasked with arranging funds. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Ashok's father fell ill which required personal attention. Taking advantage of the situation, the four partners ordered unrelated raw material in Ashok's name from various traders and sold the factory's tile production. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors are going crazy for these comfy, stylish, easy-on shoes Ultra-Comfortable Shoes Undo They equally divided the proceeds but not give Ashok his share. After Ashok's father's death, he discovered the factory was closed. Upon questioning his partners about the raw materials and production, they claimed that the factory had incurred huge losses due to the economic downturn, resulting in a debt of approximately Rs five crore, to be shared equally. Ashok requested his partners to pay their share of the debt so he could do the same, but they insisted he first cover their share, promising to repay him later. Consequently, Ashok sold his land and property to pay off Rs 4.37 crore. Despite repeated requests for repayment, his partners evaded him and eventually threatened him, leaving Ashok in constant distress. Around the same time, Ashok developed a romantic relationship with Manisha from Ahmedabad and frequently visited her. Meanwhile, Manisha came into contact with Archit from Gandhinagar, and the duo together extracted nearly Rs 70 lakh from him under various pretexts. The complaint states that Archit then threatened Ashok via WhatsApp calls from Manisha's phone, warning him that his family would be harmed if he did not pay more money. A few days before the incident, Ashok asked for Rs 2 lakh from his brother, stating that he would be forced to consume poison if he did not receive the money. Ashok told him that Manisha had called him to meet in Junagadh where she and Archit demanded Rs 25 lakh, threatening to implicate him in a rape case if he did not comply. On Aug 11, Ashok consumed poison and died during treatment in the Morbi govt hospital. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). The central probe agency registered the instant case on March 14, 2023. The accused was one of the directors of the accused chit fund firm, which defrauded about Rs 25 lakh of public money (cheating, criminal breach of trust in furtherance of common intention, and fraudulently making default in repayment of deposits on maturity, along with benefits.) by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like After the investigation, a charge sheet was filed by the CBI on September 28, 2024, against the accused. The accused has been produced before the Magistrate Court, Kolkata, and the court has granted a transit remand for three days for producing him before the Special Judge (CBI), West Tripura, Agartala, in the Tripura chit fund case. The trial in the case is continuing. The CBI on February 7 this year arrested three absconding accused from Hyderabad, Hojai (Assam) and Vellore (Tamil Nadu) in connection with the Tripura chit-fund scam case. Live Events The CBI sources had said that Minnatullah Barbhuiya was arrested in Hyderabad, Kamrul Islam Barbhuiya from Hojai (Assam), and Imdadullah Barbhuiya was arrested in Vellore (Tamil Nadu). All three absconding accused are residents of Assam's Hailakandi district. Minnatullah Barbhuiya and Kamrul Islam Barbhuiya are Directors of Kama (Indian) Projects and Services Ltd. The CBI had re-registered a case in pursuance of the notifications issued by the Tripura government and the government of India, by taking over three cases separately filed in West Agartala, Kumarghat and Teliamura police stations in September 2014, March 2013 and August 2012, respectively. Sources said that the central probe agency took over the cases from Tripura Police to investigate the allegations of collection of huge money from the people and the investors assuring huge profit/return of invested money without having any authority from SEBI, RBI and other authorities and thus misappropriated the whole money by operators/management of M/s Kama (India) Projects and Services Ltd. During the investigation, it was revealed that the prime accused persons -- Minnatullah and Kamrul Islam and Imdadullah -- who are the co-accused in criminal conspiracy and in misappropriation of public money, had not joined the investigation in the case to date and were absconding from their last known address and since long. Hence, NBWs (Non-Bailable Warrants) were issued by a Special CBI Court in Agartala to apprehend and secure their presence in the investigation of the case. The CBI on February 3 arrested another accused, Bikash Das, a resident of Assam's Hailakandi district, from Bhiwandi in Maharashtra, in connection with the Tripura chit fund scam case. Das was wanted in two FIRs by the CBI, related to the alleged chit fund scam cases, referred to the CBI by the Tripura government. Special CBI Judge Agartala earlier declared him a proclaimed offender, who had been absconding since 2013, and issued a standing warrant against him on August 16, 2024. The CBI had also announced a cash award of Rs 20,000 for apprehending him. The Tripura High Court last year ordered a scheme to return money to the customers cheated by chit fund companies.

Family petitions CM for NIA probe into death of woman in Kothamangalam
A nine-member Special Investigation Team led by Muvattupuzha DySP has been formed to probe the case related to the death of a 23-year-old woman found hanging in her house in Kothamangalam last week. The decision came on a day when the family of the victim petitioned the Chief Minister and the State Police Chief demanding a probe by the National Investigation Agency into the incident. In her petition, the victim's mother raised the spectre of attempted forcible religious conversion of her daughter by the accused Rameez, 24, who had since been arrested and remanded in judicial custody, and his family. She alleged that her daughter was locked up by the accused and family in their house and was physically assaulted as she had mentioned in her suicide note. She further accused the police of having invoked only light charges against the accused. The Kothamangalam police have booked the accused under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 69 (sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means etc) and 108 (abetment to suicide). He was also booked under BNS Section 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) on charges that he slapped her. The police are investigating the potential involvement of more persons, especially a friend of Rameez who the victim had accused of having visited her home multiple times. The police are also trying to track down more witnesses and record their statements. Though they were reports that parents of Rameez would be interrogated and arraigned in as accused for abetment to suicide, the police have not summoned them yet though they have not completely ruled out such a possibility during the course of the investigations. The police have also moved for the custody of Rameez for more detailed interrogation. Meanwhile, the autopsy report confirmed the death by hanging and provided evidence to substantiate charges under Section 69 of the BNS invoked by the police. The police have ruled out the allegations of attempted forcible religious conversion and stated that it appeared to be a case of a failed love affair. The two had been batchmates during graduation at a college in Aluva and had decided to marry. However, Rameez reportedly backtracked and did not respond to her calls and messages of late. He also reportedly blocked her on WhatsApp. The woman was found hanging in her house in Kothamangalam on Saturday (August 09, 2025). Initially, the Kothamangalam police registered a case for unnatural death. However, the police stumbled upon the note, reportedly written by the victim, during the preparation of mahassar on Sunday, following which additional charges were invoked.
