The Somerset man making guitars for Idles and Massive Attack

BBC News10 hours ago
Rocker Josh Stopford spent a decade on the road with ska band Yes Sir Boss. But after retraining as a carpenter he has switched from playing with the stars to making guitars for them.Mr Stopford, from Frome in Somerset, has performed with Joss Stone, supported reggae legends Toots and the Maytals, gigged with Reef and appeared at Glastonbury multiple times.Since setting up in 2018, he has built and worked on instruments for Bristol legends Massive Attack and Idles, as well as The Vaccines, Gaz Coombes, The Stranglers, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and The The.
The 41-year-old told BBC Radio Somerset he made the change when he had his first child after 10 years of touring Europe. When he realised as a carpenter he could make guitars he "sort of couldn't believe I hadn't thought of it before"."It takes about two-and-a-half months from start to finish, it depends what you want," the dad-of-two said."But if what you want is complicated and fiddly, it's worth the wait.
"For me, doing the little details is the really great bit. It's all the finishing that makes it very exciting to me," said Mr Stopford.Musician Alex Lee, who has worked with Massive Attack, Goldfrapp, Placebo, Suede and the Royal Shakespeare Company, apparently feels the same way. He is planning on coming in to Mr Stopford's workshop at West Valley Guitars with some wood from his garage which he wants to use in an instrument."He was just really interested in the building part of it," said the carpenter.
At the moment Mr Stopford only builds electric guitars, which cost between £2,500 and £3,200.He said: "I would make acoustic but it's hard enough to make money with electrics."Acoustics, they take a lot longer and cost more to build, and launching into that feels sort of overwhelming." Besides, he finds electrics more appealing."I've found my thing and that's it," he said. "I've arrived."

Boots announces two beauty advent calendars for 2025 – and the waitlists are open now

Even with the rise of dedicated shops like Sephora and Lookfantastic, every beauty obsessive has trodden the hallowed halls of the beauty aisles at Boots. Despite stiff competition, it remains a key retailer, and Boots' beauty advent calendars are no exception. That's right: this year, the high-street retailer has launched not one, but two Christmas countdowns: the 24 beauty stars luxury advent calendar (£150, and the 24 days of skin advent calendar (£70, There are already more than 15 beauty advent calendars on offer, and it's only August. While Boots is keeping some of the magic of Christmas alive with just a sneak peek at these new 24-day bundles, I can spy a few clues of what's to come. I predict Korean skincare, luxury Drunk Elephant moisturisers and more. Boots usually takes a more affordable approach to beauty advent calendars and, while high-end department stores like Liberty and Selfridges charge more than £250, Boots' 2025 calendar keeps things more accessibly aspirational with options at £70 and £150. Scroll on for everything I know so far, including full worth, a first look at the contents and how to join the waitlist. Boots 24 beauty stars luxury advent calendar: £150, The beauty stars calendar is Boots' main advent offering, with a whopping £600+ worth. The retailer is keeping the full 24 days secret for now, but after peering at the press shot, I've spied some gems. Included are Drunk Elephant's protini polypeptide cream (£21, Sol de Janeiro's 76 perfume mist (£24, the Laneige lip glowy balm (£17.50, and Iconic London's get cheeky face powder palette (£35, Interestingly, skincare obsessives will get their very own advent. If you have a penchant for fresh skin and make-up-free days, then you'll find what you're looking for in Boots' 24 days of skin offering. Again, the worth of this calendar exceeds four times the amount you'll pay and, in addition to the products above, I've spotted Round Lab's birch juice sunscreen (£18.90, and Anua's PDRN hyaluronic acid capsule serum (£18, as well as some impressive Korean skincare heroes.

Final straw that drove Peter Andre to post bombshell statement about Katie Price – and heartbreaking reason behind it

PETER Andre has finally defended himself after being under fire from Katie Price for 16 years. They've been devoted parents to kids Junior, 20, and Princess, 18, since their split in 2009 but Katie has taken every opportunity to slam her ex. 5 5 5 Peter finally snapped in a blistering statement on Thursday, following Katie 's latest claims that their kids live with both Pete and her. In the same podcast, she said she had been frozen out of her daughter Princess 's blossoming career, which includes glam photoshoots, brand deals, and a new ITV reality show titled The Princess Diaries. Last night, Pete directly addressed her claims and sources tell The Sun he was pushed to the brink. One said: "Pete had to speak out now because things had just become unbearable. "Katie lies and lies about Pete, she talks about him and tells lies about the kids all the time and he was sick of it. "The fact is, she went on her podcast and said that Princess lived with her and that's just not true. "It's been a really difficult and upsetting time for the family - she's goading him and constantly speaking about him and none of it is true." Sources also noted how Katie booked herself into more face surgery in Turkey on the weekend that Princess's ITV show launched. Previously, Katie flew to Ibiza and partied with celebs like Wayne Lineker, Dean Gaffney and Jamie O'Hara, at the same time Princess was making her debut on the Spanish island in a catwalk show. The source said: "It's almost like Katie wanted to overshadow Princess's show and insert herself into the narrative - normally, you'd think a parent would step back and let their child enjoy their moment in the spotlight but Katie couldn't do that. Princess Andre breaks silence on Peter and Katie's bitter feud after his blistering statement "One minute she's admitting she wanted to film with Princess in Ibiza, then this week she's saying on her podcast she doesn't need to be in the show." Peter and Katie are doubtless proud of their children's impressive achievements. They have been thrust into the spotlight, thanks to their mum and dad being two of the UK's most well known celebrities. They've capitalised on that schooling, rightly so, with Junior releasing a No1 single and Princess signing a huge beauty deal and launching her own brand. The source continued: "This should have been a really exciting time for the family, instead it's overshadowed by Katie's rants. "It really affects everyone - it's hard for Princess as she loves her mum, but it's just drama and negativity at every turn." Over the past year Peter has also been accused by Katie's fans of being "cruel" and "emotional manipulation" during his marriage to Katie. TikToks have been doing the rounds showing carefully edited clips from Katie and Peter's reality shows. Moments show them snapping at each other, but with Pete coming off worse. It hasn't gone unnoticed by Pete who has found that the clips hatefully exclude any context. Peter Andre's statement in full Peter hit back after Katie's claims on her recent podcast that she was being frozen out of Princess's career - despite Princess living with her. Peter wrote on Instagram: "For sixteen years I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silence has been incredibly frustrating. "That ends today. "The latest comments about my children's welfare and living arrangements compel me to set the record straight. "For well-documented reasons, and for their safety, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood. "In 2019, the family courts issued a legally binding order to enforce this arrangement. I have never made this public before out of respect for my children." "In 2011 and 2015, publicly documented court cases found my ex wife had made false claims. She was ordered to pay substantial damages and legal costs, and to apologise, to me and my management. "The same falsehoods are being repeated today." "Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations that I have yet to address. Those will be dealt with in the coming months." His statement came just hours after Katie claimed that Princess was living with her on her latest podcast. She said: "I've missed out so much with Princess. I haven't watched the show, but, people have told me how proud I should be of the kids and how they Princess does talk highly of me all the way through it so although I'm not in the show she speaks about me all the time which is really sweet. "But why wouldn't she, because she lives with me. And this is another thing I need to clear up, the kids have never lived just with Pete, we've shared the kids." A source continued: "People online are making heavily edited TikToks using clips from the old reality shows where they take out Katie's audio so it looks like Pete is being cruel to her. "If you watch the original show, certain lines have been taken out. "Things like that where Pete is made to look bad really upset him." They continued: "Pete would like nothing more than for Katie to never ever speak about him in public ever again but she won't stop. "He's kept a dignified silence for so long, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns legal as she's gone too far now. He just wants a harmonious life for his family." A rep for Peter tells The Sun: "Peter has issued his statement as he is not prepared for this to go on any longer and it's affecting his family." 5
