'Disruptive' Scotland build-up frustrates Malcolm

BBC News24-07-2025
Captain Rachel Malcolm says the Scotland players have been put in an "unfair position" by a "very disruptive" build-up to this summer's Rugby World Cup.Last month a source from the Scotland camp told the BBC players were "suffering with their mental and emotional health" as more than half the squad faced uncertainty over their contracts after the tournament.Chief executive Alex Williamson said the contract negotiations would be resolved before Scotland's opener against Wales on 23 August, although those discussions remain ongoing.Head coach Bryan Easson announced last week he would be stepping down after the World Cup, which Malcolm said came as "a shock" and she described the timing of the announcement, so close to the tournament, as "upsetting".Malcolm said having to deal with numerous off-field issues less than a month out from the event has disappointing. The BBC has contacted Scottish Rugby for comment."I think that the timing is the most frustrating," the 34-year-old flanker said."As players we want to have 1000% of our focus on performing for our country at the biggest tournament in our careers, but there's obviously been that distraction."I think all of us are very passionate that the game in Scotland needs to grow and all of us are very passionate about being a part of that process, but not at the detriment of our performance at this World Cup, which ultimately is the most important part of our careers as players."I think it's slightly unfair to put us in a position where that distraction's been there."My ethos as a captain is to make my players feel like superwomen, it's to make them feel valued and like they belong. And the processes which have gone on behind the scenes have definitely done almost the opposite of those three things, so it's definitely made my job a little bit tougher."
Easson departing after 'sticky' discussions
Malcolm said discussions with the Scottish Rugby hierarchy to try to resolve the contractual dispute only served to leave her feeling "more frustrated" and the union "probably haven't had too much sympathy towards our case".On the timing of the announcement of Easson's impending departure, Malcolm believes it was taken out of the head coach's hands."I don't think much of it was within his control, so obviously Scottish Rugby decided that was the time to do it and that's when it was done, so there's not much else we can do about that," she said."It's not ideal prep whatsoever. It's been very disruptive."Easson admits the timing of the announcement was problematic, with "sticky" discussions with Williamson taking place in the last month, and refused to be drawn on whether he was leaving the role of his own volition."My contract was up after the Rugby World Cup, we have been in discussions for a long time just to see what's happening and it's been sticky," he said."I'll be honest, discussions have been sticky, and it did take a while and I did have a discussion three or four weeks ago."It was felt that it was the right time to move on. Obviously I'd have preferred the timing to have been a little bit different, but it was just an adult conversation between two people."Professional sport is high-performance sport and I think one thing you do understand as a coach is that you're never going to be in one place for forever."

'A transfer that could rank in the Tim Cahill bracket of good signings'

We asked what you made of Everton's signing of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Chelsea in a deal worth about £ are some of your comments:Gregg: Very pleased with Kiernan's arrival. A great, creative, box-to-box midfielder with his best years ahead of him. Just what we needed. Will play well under David Moyes. Good value for money as well. Looking forward to watching him play in our new Like most players, I believe he will be much better than we have seen with regular game time. In the games he has played at Chelsea, he has looked composed and able to control a game, which has been lacking from the Everton midfield in recent This move has the word potential written all over it. KDH has the potential to be a dark horse for the England World Cup squad if he hits the ground running. A transfer that could rank in the Tim Cahill bracket of good signings. KDH and James Garner could be a midfield handful for anyone. I see this as a positive One of the best signings of this transfer window of any club - particularly at that price. He is a proven player with good experience, and the perfect fit for an Everton side managed by Moyes. Very He is a good addition to the middle of the park, but I can't help but notice we have literally nobody at right wing and two right-backs who aren't exactly reliable, for very different reasons. It is nice to have him as long as it doesn't affect reinforcements on the A great signing for Everton and a steal for the price we paid. He is a really good player who will only get better. Hopefully he will get a few more new team-mates in the coming few weeks too.

Alexander Isak not invited to Newcastle players' family barbecue

Alexander Isak's standoff with Newcastle hit crisis point after he was ordered to train separately by Eddie Howe and not included in a player-family bonding day with the rest of the squad. Howe had organised a barbecue with players and their families after the first day back at training, following a pre-season tour in Asia. However, Isak, who has told the club he wants to explore a move away from St James' Park, was told to come into the training after the event in order to be treated for a minor thigh injury. It came just days after Howe publicly insisted Isak needed to 'earn the right' to train with the rest of the squad after missing pre-season matches amid uncertainty over his future and a rejected £110m bid from Liverpool. The Newcastle manager has get-togethers with players' loved ones at the club's training ground throughout the season. This is to include families and help the squad bond. It appears Howe is standing firm over the 25-year-old's conduct during pre-season. On conclusion of matches in Singapore and South Korea, Howe insisted: 'No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal. You have to earn the right.' Howe had sent Isak home from Newcastle's pre-season opener at Celtic after the intense scrutiny over his future and interest from Liverpool. It then emerged that the Sweden international informed the club of his desire to move away from Newcastle this summer, despite having three years left on his current deal at St James' Park. With the club citing a minor thigh injury, he did not travel to Asia but instead flew to Spain where he underwent personal training sessions at his old club Real Sociedad. Howe revealed he heard about the trip to Spain through the media rather than from the player himself. Newcastle's valuation of Isak is £150m and they will stick rigidly to their price. Liverpool, meanwhile, have moved closer to selling Darwin Núñez to Al Hilal in a deal worth £46m plus add-ons.
