Tze Yong out of Singapore and Indonesia Opens with knee strain

KUALA LUMPUR: Men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong has pulled out of next week's Singapore Open and the Indonesia Open (June 3-8) after suffering a knee strain during his Malaysia Masters match on Wednesday.
In a statement, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) confirmed that world No. 239 Tze Yong sustained the injury during his first-round clash against Hong Kong's world No. 21 Angus Ng and will be sidelined for two weeks.
It's a blow for Tze Yong, who had only just returned to competition last month at the Badminton Asia Championships after a 14-month layoff due to a back injury.

Pearly-Thinaah clear first hurdle at Indonesia Open

National women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M Thinaah are hoping to add the Indonesia Open title to the Thailand Open title they won last month. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : National women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M Thinaah cleared their first hurdle in the Indonesia Open and moved into the last 16 after defeating Taiwanese pair Sung Shun Yun-Yu Chien Hui in Jakarta today. The world No 4 duo were made to work by the 15th ranked pair, winning 21-16, 21-17 in a match that took 41 minutes. It was the second time that they had faced each other, with Pearly-Thinaah winning on both occasions. Pearly-Thinaah, who are looking to bag their first World Tour Super 1000 series title, won the Super 500 Thailand Open last month. In the last 16 tomorrow, they will meet Indonesian pair Lanny Tria Mayasari- Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti, who defeated Malaysia's Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing 19-21, 21-16, 21-19 in a match lasting 69 minutes. Surprise qualifiers for the second round were Malaysia's Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting, who defeated home pair Isyana Syahira Meida-Rinjani Kwinara Nastine 10-21, 21-14, 21-17 in a tough encounter also lasting 69 minutes. Earlier, mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai took only 31 minutes to beat Thailand's Phuwanat Horbanluekit- Fungfa Korpthammakit 21-12, 21-16 in 31 minutes to move into the second round. The world No 5 shuttlers will meet home pair Amri Syahnawi-Nita Violina Marwah, ranked No 25, for a place in the quarter-finals tomorrow. There was disappointment elsewhere when two Malaysian men's doubles pairs were eliminated in the first round. Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi fought hard but lost to world No 4 pair Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang from China 21-23, 20-22 in a match lasting 40 minutes. Choon Hon Jian-Haikal Muhammad were also shown the exit after losing to Japan's Hoki Takuro-Yugo Kobayashi 13-21, 9-21 in 29 minutes. Pearly-Thinaah stay sharp with commanding opening win in Jakarta

KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 4 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah showed no signs of fatigue as they kicked off their fourth consecutive week of competition with a confident first-round victory at the Indonesia Open on Wednesday. Pearly-Thinaah barely broke a sweat against world No. 15 Sung Shuo Yun-Yu Chien Hui of Taiwan, sealing a 21-16, 21-17 win in just 41 minutes at Istora Senayan in Jakarta. The match marked their second win over the Taiwanese pair, having also beaten them in the opening round of the same tournament last year. Despite the result, Thinaah admitted that they weren't fully satisfied with their performance. "To be honest, we're not really happy with today's performance," she said. "It's a new court for us — this year it's a Victor court and the shuttle feels a bit different from what we expected. "But we tried to do what we could, and we also discussed it among ourselves and with the coaches. Tomorrow, we'll be more prepared and aim to do better." Pearly shared that the distinctive blue court surface was something new but not a major issue. "Of course, it's a bit different. It's our first time playing on a blue surface," she said. "But it didn't affect us much — maybe just some of our own mistakes that gave away easy points." The Malaysian pair have been on a grueling run of competitions, beginning with their title-winning campaign at the Thailand Open, followed by a semi-final showing at the Malaysia Masters and a quarter-final finish at last week's Singapore Open. Still, Pearly stressed the importance of mental focus and resilience. "I think everyone is tired, not just us," she said. "But we always remind each other to stay focused, and we just want to keep fighting for every match." They will next face Indonesia's world No. 20 Lanny Tria Mayasari-Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti for a place in the quarter-finals. Lanny-Siti denied an all-Malaysian second-round clash when they overcame world No. 23 Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing 19-21, 21-16, 21-19. There was also cause for celebration for world No. 47 Carmen Ting-Ong Xin Yee, who clinched their first-ever win at a prestigious Super 1000 event. The Malaysian pair battled back from a game down to defeat Indonesia's world No. 59 Isyana Syahira Meida-Rinjani Kwinara Nastine 10-21, 21-14, 21-17. In the men's doubles, world No. 32 Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi put up a strong fight against China's world No. 4 Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang but fell just short, losing 23-21, 22-20. Meanwhile, world No. 39 Haikal Nazri-Choong Hon Jian were outplayed by former world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi, going down 21-13, 21-9 in just 29 minutes.

Soon Huat-Shevon off to flying start in Indonesia

KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 5 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai got their Indonesia Open campaign off to a flying start with a comfortable win in the first round in Jakarta on Wednesday. The independent mixed doubles pair, who are also husband and wife, made light work of Thailand's world No. 112 Phuwanat Horbanluekit-Sapsiree Taerattanachai, cruising to a 21-12, 21-16 victory in just 31 minutes at the Istora Senayan. Soon Huat-Shevon are looking to end their title drought, having last stood atop the podium at the Swiss Open and Malaysia Masters in 2023. The second round will pose a tougher test, with the Malaysians set to face either Taiwan's world No. 28 Lu Ming Che-Hung En Tzu or Indonesia's world No. 25 Amri Syahnawi-Nita Violina Marwah on Thursday.
