UK Secretly Relocated Afghans after Data Leak
The Ministry of Defence leaked highly sensitive information in early 2022. This data, including names and details of Afghans seeking UK relocation, appeared on Facebook later that year. Affected individuals immediately faced Taliban threats.
Consequently, the former Conservative government launched a clandestine relocation program after Ministers feared the Taliban would target those named in the leak. This program remained hidden under a strict court-ordered 'superinjunction' until Tuesday.
Defence Secretary John Healey publicly apologised for the breach on Tuesday. 'This serious data incident should never have happened,' Healey told Parliament. He extended a 'sincere apology' to all affected individuals, including MPs and military personnel named in the files.
The incident ranks among Britain's worst security breaches. Thousands of lives faced extreme risk, particularly Afghans who supported British forces before the 2021 withdrawal. The relocation scheme has cost taxpayers approximately £400 million so far. It relocated around 4,500 Afghans and their families, Healey confirmed. Political Repercussions
A Ministry of Defence review summary, also published Tuesday, stated over 16,000 affected people reached the UK by May 2024. Some used existing schemes. The leaked dataset contained information on nearly 19,000 applicants and families; a High Court summary cited over 33,000 affected individuals.
The government secured the superinjection in 2023. Officials argued public disclosure could trigger Taliban killings. Now, the government faces lawsuits from breach victims. These cases will add significantly to the final cost.
Meanwhile, the new Labour government, elected in July, has launched its own review. Healey stated no further Afghans will receive asylum solely due to the leak. A review found little evidence of a Taliban revenge campaign against former officials.
This revelation surfaces amidst tight UK public finances and rising support for the anti-immigration Reform UK party. British forces originally deployed to Afghanistan in 2001 following the 9/11 attacks.

During the call, the European diplomats told Araqchi of 'their determination to use the 'snapback' mechanism — which allows for the reimposition of all international sanctions against Iran — in the absence of concrete progress' towards a new deal on Iran's nuclear program 'by the end of the summer', the French Foreign Ministry said. In June, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said that the Europeans would be 'justified' in pursuing a snapback of UN sanctions lifted under a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and major powers. The speculation about Tehran's nuclear program has been increasing since Israel bombed Iranians nuclear facilities on June 13. The US became directly involved in the conflict between Israel and Iran on June 22 after launching airstrikes on the Iranian nuclear facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. British MP Announces ‘Independent Gaza Tribunal' to Investigate UK Involvement in Israel's Genocide
British MP Jeremy Corbyn has unveiled an independent 'Gaza tribunal' to investigate the UK's involvement in Israeli genocide in Gaza, according to Arab News. The Independent MP, who was the former Labour Party leader, has been criticizing Israeli military operation in Gaza since October 2023. Bill to Investigate British Complicity On June 4, Corbyn introduced a bill into the UK House of Commons urging the government to establish an independent inquiry into UK's complicity in Israeli war in Gaza, including the supply of weapons, surveillance aircraft and use of Royal Air Force bases. However, the bill was rejected at its second reading earlier this month. Independent Gaza Tribunal On Thursday, Corbyn announced that he would hold a Gaza tribunal in September as 'the public deserves to know the full scale of their government's complicity in genocide.' Furthermore, he mentioned the UK's ill-fated decision to join the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 and said: 'Just like Iraq, the government is doing everything it can to protect itself from scrutiny. Just like Iraq, it will not succeed in its attempts to suffocate the truth.' He further assured that they will bring about justice for Palestinians. UK Involvement in Genocide Despite the fact that the British government suspended 30 arms export licenses to Israel due to Gaza War, Corbyn and pressure groups insisted that the UK is still supplying other weapons, such as parts for F-35 fighter jets. Call for Recognizing Palestinian State 'By not recognizing [Palestine] as a state, we undermine our own policy of a two-state solution and set an expectation that the status quo can continue and see the effective erasure and annexation of Palestinian territory,' the letter said. The MPs also described the plan as 'ethnic cleansing' warning that such a move means the forcible transfer of civilians and the erasure of Palestinian presence as well. UN calls for ‘immediate halt' to Afghan deportations
The United Nations insisted no one should be sent back to Afghanistan, after Germany on Friday deported 81 Afghans convicted of crimes to their Taliban-controlled homeland. The UN rights office warned that surging numbers of Afghans being forced to return to their conflict- and crisis-torn country from elsewhere in the region especially but also further afield was creating 'a multi-layered human-rights crisis.' 'UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk calls for an immediate halt to the forcible return of all Afghan refugees and asylum-seekers, particularly those at risk of persecution, arbitrary detention or torture upon their return,' spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva. She stressed that sending people, even those convicted of crimes, back to a country where they risk facing serious abuses 'violates the core international law principle of non-refoulement.' The comments came after Berlin said it had deported 81 Afghan men convicted of crimes in Germany, the second such operation. Germany, like most countries, stopped deportations to Afghanistan and closed its embassy in Kabul following the Taliban's return to power in 2021. But it resumed expulsions last year, when the previous government of Social Democrat chancellor Olaf Scholz expelled 28 Afghan convicts. Friday's deportations come as Afghanistan is already reeling from the returns of more than 1.9 million people since the beginning of the year from Iran and Pakistan. Iran has deported some 500,000 people in the past month alone, Shamdasani said. The UN warned last week that as many as three million could arrive by the end of the year. 'People returning to Afghanistan, whether by compulsion or of their own volition, find a country facing an acute humanitarian and human-rights crisis,' Shamdasani said. 'They also face structural and systemic discrimination, gender persecution, issues related to ethnicity, obstacles to full reintegration into society, and a dearth of work and livelihoods as a result of a struggling economy.'
