PETALING JAYA : An Umno leader has fired back at DAP over a grassroots proposal for Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional to contest 14 seats each in the upcoming Melaka state election.
Umno Youth secretary Hafiz Ariffin said his party was only emulating DAP MPs in Kuala Lumpur, who last year refused to give in to BN's call to be allocated several parliamentary seats in the city.
'For any DAP leader who wants BN's seats in Melaka, take a look in the mirror. Don't accuse others of being arrogant.
'This is what you showed us. We're just defending what's ours, just like what you did,' he said in a Facebook post.
Hafiz also cynically suggested that BN assemblymen in Melaka issue a joint statement stating that they would not give up their seats.
He was referring to a Malaysiakini report in November quoting DAP's Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai and Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun as saying BN should not gun for seats that DAP had already won.
Fong, a seven-term MP, said DAP would not allow BN to contest for seats his party held even if it would hamper ties between the unity government allies.
They were responding to BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's hope that the coalition could expand its presence in the federal territories by contesting five parliamentary seats in the next general election.
Perikatan Nasional won the Labuan and Putrajaya seats in the 2022 general election, while Umno vice-president Johari Ghani won BN's sole FT seat in Titiwangsa. The other 10 FT seats, located in Kuala Lumpur, have been held by PKR and DAP for multiple terms now.
Yesterday, Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh rejected a proposal from nine Melaka DAP branches for PH and BN to contest 14 seats each in the upcoming state election, telling DAP to 'dream on'.
Melaka Amanah chief Ashraf Mukhlis Minghat urged BN to keep an open heart and mind when holding seat talks instead of responding arrogantly to the grassroots proposal.

Tengku Zafrul says no by-election bid, will serve full Senate term

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz today dismissed speculation that he is seeking to trigger a by-election following his decision to leave Umno and apply to join PKR. The senator who is also serving as investment, trade and industry minister said no discussions had taken place regarding any by-election at either the federal or state level. 'Firstly, regarding speculation about participation in any by-election, whether at the federal or state level, I would like to make it clear that no such discussion has ever taken place, and it was never part of my considerations in making this decision,' he wrote in a Facebook post, after completing his Haj pilgrimage with his wife. He added that he strongly disagreed with holding by-elections without compelling reasons, as they come at a cost to the public. 'I firmly do not agree with triggering a by-election without urgent necessity, as by-elections also involve the time and money of the people. 'I will continue to carry out my responsibilities as a member of the Dewan Negara until the end of my service in December 2025,' he said Tengku Zafrul also reiterated that matters related to his ministerial position are entirely up to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'I am always ready to serve the country in any capacity,' he said, adding that he had left the corporate sector with the intention of contributing to public service. The banker-turned-minister clarified that his exit from Umno was a personal decision and not made under pressure. He thanked Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the party's supreme council and grassroots members for their support during his time in the party.

UMNO Divisional Meetings Begin, Zahid Urges Unity and Renewal

KUALA LUMPUR: Delegates from UMNO Divisions, Wanita, Youth, and Puteri have begun to gather for the UMNO Divisional Delegates' Meetings starting today until July 27. UMNO President and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, in a Facebook post, urged party members to make this conference a platform to strengthen political communication, renew promises, and reinforce determination. 'Let this conference be a platform for us to strengthen the three political approaches I outlined previously: Politics of Solution, Politics of Legacy, and Politics of Moderation. This is the foundation of our struggle that needs to be translated into every action, decision, and effort at all party levels,' he said. The Bagan Datuk Member of Parliament also wished UMNO members a successful conference, reminding them that the party must continue to amplify the voice of the people, empathize with the anxieties and aspirations of the youth, and stand strong as a party that is rearing to move forward, even as times change. 'Our strength lies not only in our historical heritage but in the unity of our hearts and the clarity of direction we uphold together. 'I believe that as long as there is sincerity in togetherness, and as long as this struggle is carried out with a pure spirit, UMNO will continue to flourish as a vessel of hope for the people and a pillar of stability and national progress,' he said. Previously, the UMNO Branch Conferences were held from April 7 to May 25, 2025, while the UMNO General Assembly is scheduled to take place from Aug 20 to 23, 2025.
