UAE Committee for Talent and National Sports Support includes drift driver Khalifa Al Falasi in its dedicated programs
The inclusion of Khalifa Al Falasi into UAETSS' programs marks a pivotal step in its efforts to identify high-potential athletes, nurture their skills and empower them to achieve exceptional sport milestones at both regional and global levels.
His Excellency Sheikh Suhail bin Butti Al Maktoum, Assistant Under-Secretary for the Sports Development and Competitiveness Sector and Chairman of the UAETSS, met with Al Falasi at the Ministry's headquarters in Dubai. H. E. reaffirmed that talent discovery and development are fundamental priorities for the Ministry, forming key pillars for building an outstanding generation of athletes who can represent the country in regional and international events. This aligns with the goal to reinforce the UAE's position as a nurturing and supporting destination for talents and sustainable sporting excellence.
H.E. Sheikh Suhail bin Butti Al Maktoum further emphasised that UAETSS makes constant efforts to recognise and cultivate sport talents across various sports disciplines in the UAE. It offers comprehensive technical and administrative support, along with funding and training programs for honing their skills and empowering them. These efforts aim to establish an integrated ecosystem that promotes constant athlete development, enabling them to reach the professional elite level and compete internationally within a sustainable and professional environment. He added, 'The onboarding of the young Emirati drift driver Khalifa Al Falasi is a testament to the Ministry's commitment to nurture young sports talents and invest in human capital, in line with the directives of our wise leadership to boost the competitiveness of Emirati sports and reinforce its international presence.'
Khalifa Al Falasi, who is 17 years old, is the first professional Emirati driver to compete in FIA's global championship and he is also the youngest driver in the competition's history. He is supported and nominated by the Emirates Motorsports Organization (EMSO), the official governing body for motorsports in the UAE.
He has an exceptional regional record of achievements, which includes securing first place nationally in the 2024 Emirates Drift Championship during his professional debut season and winning third place in both the Red Bull Car Park Drift UAE and Red Bull Car Park Drift Oman qualifiers (Middle East category). In 2025, he achieved second place nationally in the Emirates Drift Championship (Professional category) and was recognised as the youngest professional drift driver in the Middle East.
The UAE Committee for Talent and National Sports Support continues to advance objectives through the Talent Committee Platform, which was launched by the Ministry of Sports in June 2025. This platform tracks the progress of exceptional talents and athletes, closely monitoring their achievements through latest digital tools for data analysis, technical assessment and growth indicators. This approach helps constantly optimise training and support plans.

Asia Cup in UAE: Samson's place is in bit of danger, says Ashwin
Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes Sanju Samson's chances in the playing XI are in "a bit of danger" after the inclusion of Shubman Gill in the team for the upcoming Asia Cup (September 9-28) in the UAE. The Indian team for the Asia Cup was announced on Tuesday, with Suryakumar Yadav leading the squad and Gill as his deputy. Praising the wicketkeeper-batter, Ashwin said, "I am very happy for Jitesh Sharma, a well-earned position for him. He played a great knock for RCB against LSG." India will kick off their Asia Cup campaign against the UAE on September 10, while the high-voltage game against Pakistan is scheduled for September 14, with both fixtures set to be played in Dubai. India will play their final group stage fixture against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi. After the group stage, the tournament will proceed to the Super 4, where the top two teams from each group will qualify. If India finish at the top of Group A, then all of their Super 4 matches will be held in Dubai. But if India finish second, then one of their Super 4 clashes will be held in Abu Dhabi and the remaining two in Dubai. The Super 4 stage will run from September 20 to 26. Dubai will host the final, which is scheduled for September 28.

Tanish, Naseer, Tanveer in Desert Vipers team for ILT20 Development Tournament
Tanish Suri, Ali Naseer and Khuzaima Bin Tanveer are among 15 UAE players selected to represent the Desert Vipers in the ILT20 Development Tournament scheduled to be played between August 24 and September 3 in Dubai. A draft was held on August 18 at the Dubai International Stadium and attended by representatives of all six teams involved. Jack Luffman, the Desert Vipers Development Lead, headed the Vipers contingent at the draft, where a selection of fifteen was made from a pool of 350 UAE players. Luffman, who has been heavily involved in scouting local talent in his role as Development Lead for the Desert Vipers, said he was especially proud of how far fast bowler Khuzaima Bin Tanveer has come along since being discovered by the Vipers at the Development Tournament last year. 'We have managed to retain Khuzaima for the Development Tournament and what is great is that he has already been retained by the first team for season four,' said Luffman. 'While he has not quite qualified yet for the UAE (based on residency rules), I am pretty confident that once that qualification is reached, he will be straight in. I think he is the best pace bowler in the country by a fair margin.' Speaking about some of the other players to look out for at this year's Development Tournament, he added: 'We are delighted that we managed to secure Nilansh Keswani, a young left-arm spinner, who again has been in and around the UAE side, but has had a very good domestic D50 tournament in recent times. 'Other players to look out for are Nabeel Aziz, another young spinner, Sanjay Pahal, an all-rounder, and batter Mayank Mayank, who we are delighted to have with us. He scored a lot of runs in this Development Tournament last year so hopefully he can do the same for us this year. 'The players can all put themselves in the shop window and see where that leads, whether that is with us as the Vipers or with another franchise. 'I think that is the great thing about this (Development) tournament: yes, I am looking at a list of fifteen players here that will be our priority during this next ten to fourteen days but we will obviously keep an eye on everything else that is going on and relay that back to our senior coaching team. So I think that is the advantage of a short, intense, local tournament.' Fifteen of the leading players from the UAE will not be involved in the tournament because of a T20I tri-series between UAE, Afghanistan and Pakistan that takes place in August and September but Luffman believes this will not impact the quality of the Development Tournament. 'Some might say the quality will be reduced but I just think that makes it even more competitive,' he said. 'That is because there are a lot more players who probably have not had the opportunity to play at this level previously. I think that players will be really up for it. They will be well prepared and really determined to do well. 'And that, of course, just brings the level of those games up a bit more with the competitiveness, the will to win, the will to get one over on your mates. 'I am really looking forward to it. I think the quality will be high. I think the desire is there for all people to see these young and up and coming cricketers as they try and make it to the big stage. And what a great way to try and do it at the ICC Academy. I think there will be lots of runs scored as there usually are there because it is quite small. 'I am pretty sure there will be some exciting cricket to watch and hopefully the Vipers will be at the forefront of that.' New arrivals handled the pressure well in La Liga opener, says Madrid coach Alonso
Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso said Trent Alexander-Arnold and the club's other new signings had performed well in their LaLiga opener on Tuesday and did not seem to be weighed down by the pressure of playing in front of an expectant home crowd. Defenders Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen and Alvaro Carreras all started in the 1-0 win over Osasuna while 18-year-old midfielder Franco Mastantuono came on as a substitute. "I didn't feel that the shirt or the Bernabeu weighed them down," Alonso told reporters of the new arrivals. "The four of them performed well, maybe not spectacularly. But they were solid, they didn't make any mistakes, they weren't nervous and they were well integrated into the team. "Those who started and Mastantuono, who came on in the second half, brought energy. This mix has been good with those who were already there ... As a first take, I can take a lot of positives from it." Rodrygo was an unused substitute against Osasuna, as media reports link the 24-year-old Brazil winger with a move to Manchester City, but Alonso said people should not read too much into his recent lack of game time. "Today it's just one game, we can leave the rest behind," he added. "What counts is this season and of course I'm counting on Rodrygo. It's just one game, we shouldn't read too far into the future." Kylian Mbappe's 51st-minute penalty earned the hosts victory. The France striker, last season's European Golden Shoe winner, scored early in the second half after he was fouled in the area by Osasuna defender Juan Cruz. It was enough to seal the points in Alonso's first game in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Madrid now unbeaten in their opening fixture of a league campaign since 2008. Mbappe finished as La Liga's top scorer with 31 goals in his first season in Spain, and is now wearing the number 10 shirt vacated by Luka Modric after the Croatian left for AC Milan last month. "I don't know if it's linked to the new number or not, or simply to his desire to win, but he wants to improve individual and collective performance and inspire his team-mates," added Alonso. "You can see his desire every day. Today he created those decisive moments that enable us to win matches." Madrid had a shortened pre-season after their run to the Club World Cup semifinals in July, but Alonso has been adamant that would not be used as an excuse after their request for the Osasuna match to be postponed to a later date was rejected. "To start on the right foot is key in La Liga. We know we weren't well prepared," Madrid defender Dani Carvajal told DAZN. "But we basically didn't suffer and it was a complete display." Ante Budimir headed over in a rare opportunity for Osasuna and Mastantuono was denied late on by Herrera. Osasuna finished the match with 10 men with Abel Bretones sent off in stoppage time for throwing an arm to block the run of Gonzalo Garcia.
