Police captain kills girlfriend and her brother in murder suicide
A police captain has killed his girlfriend and brother before turning the gun on himself in a double murder suicide in Protea.
Three others were injured in the shooting on Saturday night.
Murder suicide
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said a police captain's girlfriend, who was also a Saps officer, was shot at their home.
'It is alleged that the group was at home celebrating the birthday of the captain's girlfriend, who is also a police officer.
'The captain reportedly called the girlfriend to the side, and that is when people saw him draw a firearm, and shoot her and her brother dead while three other civilians sustained injuries. He then turned the gun on himself,' Nevhuhulwi said.

Tragic
Nevhuhulwi said two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder and an inquest docket were opened at Protea police station for further investigation.
The provincial commissioner of the police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni said he is saddened by incident and sent his heartfelt condolences to the affected families.
'We give our members these tools to protect themselves against criminals, so it is very disheartening to see the very same tools being used to kill their loved ones.
'I urge our members to make use of Employee Health and Wellness facilities to assist them to deal with any problems they may be facing, whether work or personal, EHW is always there', said Mthombeni.
CIT suspects killed
Meanwhile, five cash-in-transit (CIT) suspects were shot dead during a confrontation with police in Johannesburg.
The gun battle between the suspects and the man in blue occurred in Crown Mines on Thursday afternoon.
Shootout
Nevhuhulwi said officers operationalised intelligence information on suspects planning to commit a cash-in-transit robbery in Johannesburg.
'Their vehicle was spotted on the M1/M2 highway split, and they sped off when they noticed the police. As a chase ensued, the suspects started shooting at the police, who retaliated. The suspect's vehicle crashed into a palisade fence.
'All five occupants were fatally shot. Preliminary investigation reveals that the same vehicle was involved in a murder and cash-in-transit robbery that occurred on 14 July 2025 at Kingsley in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).'
Nevhuhulwi said Mthombeni commended the joint forces for their coordinated and swift response.

Australian police charge Chinese national with 'foreign interference'
Australian police said Monday they had charged a Chinese national with "reckless foreign interference", accusing the woman of spying on local Buddhists for Beijing. Assistant police commissioner Stephen Nutt said the unnamed woman had been covertly gathering information on the Guan Yin Citta Buddhist association in Australia's capital, Canberra. Nutt said she was working under the command of China's Public Security Bureau, the country's main domestic law enforcement body. "We allege the activity was to support the intelligence objectives of China's Public Security Bureau," said Nutt, from the special investigations division of the Australian Federal Police. "It is a crime carried out by, or on behalf of, a foreign principle involving covert or deceptive conduct." The woman -- who cannot be named for legal reasons -- is an Australian permanent resident. She was arrested and charged with "reckless foreign interference" after police raided a number of houses in Canberra over the weekend. "During the searches, a number of items, including electronic devices, were seized and will undergo forensic examination," police said in a statement. Reckless foreign interference carries a maximum of 15 years in prison. China's sprawling security apparatus has long been accused of infiltrating community organisations as a way to keep tabs on expats and dissidents. Nearly 500 illegal miners due to appear in Barberton court
JOHANNESBURG - Almost 500 illegal miners brought to the surface from a mine in Barberton in Mpumalanga last Friday are set to appear at the Barberton Magistrate's Court on Monday. The group faces charges of contravening the Immigration Act and trespassing, while others are facing charges of possession of gold-bearing material. Their arrest follows an intense operation by law enforcement and mine security as part of Operation Vala Umgodi in the province. The police initially estimated that 1,000 miners had been arrested but later revised that number down by half. Mpumalanga police spokesperson. Ppho Nonyane-Mpe: "Members of the SAPS, including the team that is working there in collaboration with home affairs officials, are currently busy with the purifying the number in terms of how many will be charged for what type of offence."
