ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - One person was killed and another was injured when their motorcycle was targeted by a drone in the Penjwen district of eastern Sulaimani province on Saturday, a local official confirmed.
'A Turkish drone targeted a motorcycle between Shewagwezan and Taymiz villages. It was carrying two people. One was killed and the other injured,' Ziyad Abdullah, mayor of Garmk subdistrict, told Rudaw.
An investigation has been launched into the incident and the two male victims have yet to be identified.
Penjwen Mayor Hemin Ibrahim confirmed the attack, stating that 'it was a Turkish drone.'
Ankara has not commented on the incident.
Turkey frequently carries out attacks on suspected Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) targets throughout the Kurdistan Region. The PKK has declared a ceasefire and taken the first step towards laying down its arms, while in Ankara, parties in the parliament are discussing forming a commission to oversee a peace process. Despite this progress towards ending the four-decade conflict, Turkish forces have continued their military operation against the PKK, mainly in northern Duhok province.
Over the past month, there have been multiple drone attacks on the Kurdistan Region, especially its oil fields. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has blamed the attacks on Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a charge Baghdad has denied.
These attacks have stopped since Thursday, when Erbil and Baghdad finalized a deal to end their tensions over finances and Kurdish oil exports that have been halted since 2023.

Turkiye launches natural gas exports to Syria

Shafaq News – Kilis Turkiye has begun exporting natural gas to Syria under a new agreement, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced Saturday at the inauguration of the Turkiye–Syria pipeline. The gas, supplied by Azerbaijan, is being delivered through the Turkish border province of Kilis to Aleppo, following the restoration of damaged pipeline infrastructure. Bayraktar said the connection, completed on May 21, allows for the export of up to 2 billion cubic meters (BCM) of natural gas annually. #Canlı 📡Türkiye-Suriye Doğal Gaz Boru Hattı Açılış Töreni — T.C. Enerji ve Tabii Kaynaklar Bakanlığı (@TCEnerji) August 2, 2025 The gas will be used to power a 1,200-megawatt (MW) plant in Aleppo, generating electricity for an estimated 5 million households. Bayraktar revealed that Turkiye is also increasing electricity exports to Syria. Electricity currently flows through eight transmission points, and capacity is expected to rise by 25 percent. Plans are also underway to reactivate the Birecik–Aleppo line, which previously had a capacity of 500 MW. Once operational, combined exports could reach 900 MW—enough to supply around 1.6 million homes. Turkiye had previously supplied electricity intermittently to northern Syria. The pipeline from Kilis to Aleppo has a daily capacity of 6 million cubic meters.

Yazidi commander says hand Shingal security over to Peshmerga

Also in Iraq Suspected Anfal executioner had plastic surgery to avoid detection Water level plummets in Iraq's largest dam Amnesty urges Iraq's parliament to reject controversial free speech bill Iraqi parliament to vote on controversial protest bill A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A Yazidi commander on Friday called for Kurdish Peshmerga forces to be put in charge of security in the Yazidi-majority Shingal (Sinjar) district of northern Iraq where multiple armed groups and forces operate, impeding the return of thousands of residents who fled when the Islamic State (ISIS) attacked 11 years ago. 'Until Shingal's security file is handed over to the Peshmerga, the multiple forces and security problems will continue and the displaced will not trust to return to their homeland, and life in Shingal will not normalize,' Haider Shasho, commander of the Ezidikhan Protection Forces that are a Yazidi division within the Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga Ministry, told Rudaw. In 2020, the Iraqi federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) signed the Shingal Agreement to restore governance, security, and stability to the district and resolve a number of issues that have prevented the return of its inhabitants. Under that deal, Baghdad was to assume responsibility for security, expelling all armed groups and establishing a new armed force recruited from the local population. The agreement has never been fully implemented and thousands of Yazidis are still unable to return home. 'There are many conspiracies against Shingal and there are political parties in Iraq conspiring against Shingal. That's why the Shingal Agreement has not been implemented until now and the crisis and problems of the district remain ongoing,' Shasho said, calling on international actors to intervene and exert pressure on Baghdad to implement the deal. Shingal is part of the disputed areas between Baghdad and Erbil. The areas stretch across several provinces, including Nineveh, Diyala, Salahaddin, and Kirkuk. Article 140 of the Iraqi constitution, which remains unimplemented, provides a process for the KRG and the federal government to settle their disputes. 'We wish that if Shingal's security file is not handed over to the Peshmerga, at least those Peshmerga who are Yazidis should have their duties transferred to Shingal,' Shasho suggested, explaining that 'would provide important psychological assistance' to the Yazidis, 'most of whom are displaced and living in camps.' The Yazidis are an ethnoreligious group in northern Iraq that were subjected to countless heinous atrocities, including forced marriages, sexual violence, and massacres when ISIS captured the city in 2014, bringing destruction to many villages and towns populated by the minority group and committing genocide. They were forced to flee to displacement camps, mainly in the Kurdistan Region. Political disputes over the region between Baghdad and Erbil, as well as the presence of armed groups like the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), have disrupted reconstruction of the city that suffered heavy destruction during the war against ISIS. International actors, such as the United Nations and the United States, have repeatedly called on Iraqi and Kurdish authorities to implement the agreement and 'break the political deadlock' in the city. Shasho said the PKK forces in Shingal 'should also lay down their arms' after the group dissolved itself and announced it was ending its decades-long armed conflict with Turkey. 'While the PKK is recognized as a banned organization in Iraq and has now dissolved itself, its armed members continue in Shingal and the Iraqi government supports them,' Shasho claimed. The Yazidi Shingal Resistance Units (YBS) and Ezidkhan Asayish were formed by the PKK to oust ISIS. They control parts of the district. The PKK and its proxies have rejected the Shingal Agreement. Suspected Anfal executioner had plastic surgery to avoid detection

Also in Iraq Water level plummets in Iraq's largest dam Amnesty urges Iraq's parliament to reject controversial free speech bill Iraqi parliament to vote on controversial protest bill Iraq arrests accused Anfal executioner A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A man accused of torturing and executing Kurds in a remote southern Iraqi prison during the genocidal Anfal campaign underwent plastic surgery to avoid recognition and evade justice for decades, a senior local security official said on Friday after news broke of his arrest. Hajaj Ahmed Hardan al-Tikriti, nicknamed 'Hajaj Nugra al-Salman,' was arrested after a months-long investigation. The Iraqi National Security Service (INSS) described him as 'one of the most wanted henchmen of the former regime' of Saddam Hussein. 'Hajaj had previously undergone plastic surgery on his face, the purpose of which was to avoid being recognized,' Kawa Sheikhani, security advisor to Salahaddin's governor, told Rudaw. When he was arrested, Tikriti was living in Salahaddin where he worked 'in animal husbandry and has eighty sheep and four cows,' according to Sheikhani. In 1988, Hussein's Baathist regime launched a genocidal Anfal campaign, systematically targeting Kurdish villages and arresting thousands. Young men were often executed, and women, children, and the elderly were sent to the notorious Nugra Salman desert prison in Iraq's southern Muthanna province near the Saudi Arabian border. The INSS said Tikriti 'committed a series of crimes against humanity against hundreds of Iraqi citizens, particularly those of Kurdish origin who were forcibly exiled to Muthanna province. These crimes included torture, murder, and rape inside this infamous detention center.' Tikriti's family had claimed he died, according to the INSS. Survivors remember Nugra Salman as a place of daily beatings, hunger, and fear, made worse by Tikriti's brutality. More than 182,000 people were killed and over 4,500 villages were destroyed in eight phases of the Anfal campaign that culminated with the 1988 chemical weapon attack on Halabja.
