Liverpool man accused of football parade crash faces new charges

A British man accused of driving his vehicle into crowds celebrating Liverpool's Premier League title win faces an additional 24 criminal charges, prosecutors revealed Thursday at his latest court hearing.
Former British Marine Paul Doyle, 53, appeared tearful as he joined the hearing at Liverpool Crown Court via videolink from prison, when details of the new counts stemming from the May 26 incident emerged.
Merseyside Police now say 134 people were injured when Doyle allegedly drove his Ford Galaxy Titanium into crowds who were leaving Liverpool's waterfront after a victory parade.
The 31 charges in total now filed involve 29 victims, aged between six months and 77, the court heard.

Six relate to children including two babies – one aged six months at the time and one aged seven months – who were injured when the car hit people massed on Water street in the city centre.
Supporters of the city's world-famous football team had thronged its streets to celebrate the club's record-equalling 20th English top-flight title when scenes of joy turned to horror.
Doyle, a father-of-three from the Croxteth neighbourhood in the city, was initially charged with seven offences, including dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
He now faces multiple additional counts under that and other charges, including 19 for attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, three of wounding with intent and one of affray.
Doyle, wearing a grey T-shirt, did not enter any pleas during the 20-minute hearing, which several relatives of the victims and more than 20 members of the media attended.
Judge Andrew Menary adjourned the case until September 4, when Doyle is expected to enter pleas.
Earlier this year, a provisional trial date was fixed for November 24, with the case expected to last three to four weeks.

'We do identify the hotspots, and if you look at some annual statistics, more than 40,000 cellphones have been confiscated,' Groenewald said. He said that they are cleaning their facilities because the more contraband they can get rid of, the more proof they have that they are doing their job well. 'So we will continue with that, we will even increase the raids, and the people must understand that it is prohibited, and we will act accordingly,' Groenewald said. On overcrowding, Groenewald said they have admitted it is a huge problem. In Parliament, he has responded several times. They also account to the Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services in Parliament. 'Our main problem is actually when it comes to remand detainees. We have people in our facility who are awaiting trial for more than 10 years. There are six of them. Now that is part of the criminal justice system. There are ways, in terms of legislation, where we can request and go back to court, but it's not very successful,' Groenewald said. He also said they have about 3,000 remand detainees who could not afford the bail of R1,000 or less. 'There's a process trying to establish a bail fund where we can try to do that,' Groenewald said. Additionally, about 26,000 foreigners are in correctional facilities. Approximately 13,000 are remand detainees.

Louisiana sues Roblox game platform over child safety
AFP/File | Lionel BONAVENTURE LOUISIANA - The US state of Louisiana has filed a lawsuit accusing Roblox of facilitating the exploitation of children, prompting the online game platform to reject the claim as "untrue" on Friday. A lawsuit filed by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill contends that Silicon Valley-based Roblox facilitates distribution of child sexual abuse material and the exploitation of minors. "Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety," Murrill maintained in a release. The lawsuit charges Roblox with "knowingly and intentionally" failing to implement basic safety controls to protect children. Nearly 82 million people use Roblox daily, with more than half of them being younger than 18 years of age, according to the suit. "Any assertion that Roblox would intentionally put our users at risk of exploitation is simply untrue," the company said Friday in a posted response to the filing. "No system is perfect and bad actors adapt to evade detection," the company added, stressing that it works "continuously" to promote a safe online environment on the platform. The Roblox online gaming and creation platform was founded in 2004 and allows users to play, create and share virtual experiences. Roblox is one of the most popular online platforms for children, "offering a vibrant world of interactive games, imaginative play, and creative self-expression," according to the nonprofit Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI). A FOSI guide available at its website "walks parents through the basics of Roblox, the ways children commonly engage with it, and how to use built-in features like content filters, chat settings, and screen time controls" for safety. Roblox announced major safety upgrades late last year, introducing remote parental controls and restricting communication features for users under 13.

Fifa's Players' Voice Panel to aid Bournemouth's Semenyo after racist abuse
Fifa president Gianni Infantino condemned racist abuse directed at Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo during a Premier League match against Liverpool, saying the world soccer governing body would reach out to the Ghana international to offer their support. Semenyo was targeted by a man in the crowd at Liverpool's Anfield Stadium during the first half on Friday, with referee Anthony Taylor stopping play to address the incident. Taylor spoke to both managers and captains before play resumed. Merseyside police said a 47-year-old man had been ejected from Anfield. On Saturday, they confirmed the man from Liverpool had been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and taken into custody to be interviewed. On Saturday, Semenyo thanked his teammates, Liverpool, match officials and the 'entire football family' for their support.
