Kuwait opens shrimp fishing season in economic zone
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 2: The Director General of the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources, Eng. Salem Al-Hai announced that the shrimp fishing season has officially begun on Aug 1, Friday, within Kuwait's economic zone — provided that an official fishing permit has been obtained. In a statement issued by the Authority, Al-Hai explained that the decision aims to support the sustainability of fish stocks and ensure the availability of shrimp in the local market following the end of the seasonal fishing ban. He urged all fishermen and stakeholders to strictly follow the relevant laws and regulations to protect the country's marine resources. Al-Hai also noted that shrimp fishing in Kuwait's territorial waters will be permitted starting September 1st, but only by trawling with eco-friendly 'Kofa' nets — a method designed to minimize environmental impact.

Rolls-Royce shares surge as engine maker lifts outlook
LONDON: Shares in Rolls-Royce surged by more than nine percent in London trading Thursday after the British maker of aircraft engines raised its full-year outlook on strong demand. The company reported a fourfold increase in first-half net profit to £4.4 billion ($5.8 billion), which compared with £1.1 billion in the first six months of 2024. The sharp rise was attributed to rising sales and a significant accounting gain linked to weakening of the dollar. Revenue increased seven percent to £9.5 billion in the reporting period. Rolls-Royce, which supplies engines to the world's biggest aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing, has undergone a major turnaround since chief executive Tufan Erginbilgic took the helm in 2023. 'Our actions led to strong first half year results, despite the challenges of the supply chain and tariffs,' Erginbilgic said in the earnings statement. Rolls-Royce benefits from a trade agreement between the UK and US struck in May, which removes tariffs on Britain's aerospace sector. The agreement places a 10-percent tariff on the import of British goods to the US, and lowers sector-specific levies including on automakers. Rolls on Thursday said it expects to 'fully offset the impact of the announced tariffs through... mitigating actions' by the group. It expects to deliver underlying operating profit of up to £3.2 billion for the year, compared with its previous forecast of between £2.7 billion and £2.9 billion. The group announced a dividend for the first half of the year, after reinstating shareholder payments last year. 'Rolls-Royce continues to soar above expectations, delivering yet another set of high-flying results and profit guidance upgrades,' said Aarin Chiekrie, equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. 'Revenues are being boosted by the upward trend in engine-flying hours, which are now cruising well above pre-pandemic levels,' he added. Around 0900 GMT, shares in Rolls-Royce were up 9.2 percent at £10.79 on London's rising FTSE 100 index. The UK government recently made Rolls its preferred bidder to build small modular nuclear reactors. Rolls-Royce SMR, which aims to cut the costs and complexity of building nuclear power stations, is hoping to be profitable by 2030. — AFP

KNPC to build 16 fuel stations in Kuwait
KUWAIT CITY, July 31: Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) has obtained approval to build 16 fuel stations this year, say sources from the oil sector. Sources disclosed that the stations will be located in new residential cities, while some densely populated residential areas will have additional fuel stations. Sources said the company aims to increase its sales of all types of gasoline to at least seven million liters by 2030, considering that its sales exceeded 5.105 million liters of gasoline by the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025; compared to 5.016 million liters in the previous year and around 4.891 million liters in 2023. Sources confirmed that the company is targeting increased revenues from car wash stations, whose revenues declined in fiscal 2024/2025 to KD393,300 compared to KD432,000 in the previous fiscal year. Sources indicated that KNPC is planning to develop its car wash stations to achieve the targeted returns. Sources stated that KNPC will establish new fuel stations in line with environmental cleanliness and international requirements, particularly the strategy of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) to achieve carbon neutrality. Sources added the company intends to implement many initiatives related to its projects and refineries in order to reduce carbon emissions. Moreover, sources confirmed that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KNPC Wadha Al-Khatib ensured that around 120 Kuwaiti employees under contractor contracts were treated fairly as their salaries, which exceeded the top of the grade scale, were not affected. Sources said these employees remain entitled to promotions and job placements under the regulations. Sources added that the Kuwaitis employed at Al-Dar Company, which implements service projects for KNPC, will soon receive their end-of-service benefits. Sources also stated that the executive management of KNPC prioritizes nationals, such that it periodically announces job advertisements to increase the percentage of nationals working in the company to compensate for the decline in 2025. They revealed that in the first quarter of this year, the number of Kuwaiti workers reached 5,864; compared to about 6,007 during the same period in 2024. The percentage of national workers in KNPC stands at 92.4 percent, which, sources stressed, is a good percentage. They went on to say that Al-Khatib's recent instructions to the leadership of the company center on the need to increase the national human capital and develop their functional capabilities. They added that KNPC organized many training courses for the national workforce in cooperation with local and international institutions.
