Gary Lineker's net worth, love life and unusual set-up with model ex-wife

Daily Mirror26-05-2025

Gary Lineker has enjoyed a successful career as a footballer and broadcaster, but has now stepped away from BBC's Match of the Day - and his personal life has been just as eventful
Gary Lineker, who bid a tearful goodbye to his time on Match of the Day on Sunday, hasn't shied away from opening up about his love life.
The sports TV presenter, 64, confirmed his last appearance on BBC's Match of the Day after 26 years in the hot seat was coming earlier than expected despite schedules to cover the FA Cup and next summer's World Cup. The sudden exit came after Gary was hit with backlash for sharing and then deleting a pro-Palestine video featuring an 'antisemitic' rat emoji.

Despite this, Gary has been one of the most recognisable faces on television thanks to his hugely successful football career and role as a pundit. But it's not just his career that has made headlines, as he's notably gone through two public divorces, has spoken about one unusual set-up and has earned a whopping amount from his time with the BBC.

Impressive net worth
Gary is one of the most iconic footballers of his era, turning out for Leicester, Everton, Spurs and Barcelona, and earning 80 caps for England. Despite his illustrious football career, the majority of his fortune hails from his television work, given he hung up his boots before the Premier League's financial explosion.
He first joined the BBC 's Premier League highlights programme in 1999 when he took over from Des Lynam and has been part of some of the show's most unforgettable moments. In addition to his longstanding role with the BBC, the 63 year old has also been associated with TNT Sports and is well-known for leading promotional campaigns for brands such as Walkers crisps.
Gary's net worth is thought to be around a whopping £30 million. His eye-watering wealth is significantly bolstered by his hefty BBC earnings - the broadcaster divulged in its annual salary report that Gary pocketed between £1,300,000 and £1,354,999 in 2023/2024.
Despite already being the BBC's top earner for the previous seven years, Gary had offered to take a substantial pay cut of about £350,000 to stay on MOTD but is now set to depart from the show.
Love life

The ex-England goalscorer has been married twice and shares his four children with his first wife, Michelle Cockayne, whom he married in 1986 and divorced 20 years later.
In 2007, the star began dating Danielle Bux, who was 20 years his junior, and they later married in Italy. But their marriage only lasted six years before the pair announced they were splitting in early 2016, reportedly due to their differing opinions on starting a family.
In 2019, Gary explained: "Danielle and I are best mates, we still speak three times a day, we text all the time. When she comes to London, she stays with me, and when I go to LA, I see her."

Gary is thought to still be single and has candidly opened up about his dating life. Back in 2021, he claimed to be unbothered about intimacy anymore, conceding he was at an age where his testosterone levels had dropped. More recently, he has insisted he doesn't miss being married and is content that his working life and sons occupy the bulk of his time.
In an interview with The Times, Gary said: "I like being on my own... I don't feel lonely. I have the odd date here and there, but nothing, not in terms of a long relationship. I've been married most of my adult life. Two really good marriages, I'm friends with both."

Unusual set-up
The pundit described his second wife Danielle as his 'best mate' and refused to comment on his sex life. He insisted: "I am still single. I am not going down that route! I have been there before and tried to explain myself and I got slaughtered by my friends." Gary also denied ever using dating apps and refused to let his sons set up an online profile for him.
After Gary and Danielle split, she went on to marry Nate Greenwald, an American entertainment lawyer, in 2019 and the couple welcomed their now-four-year-old daughter, Romy. Although, the exes still come together with their families.
Back in Christmas 2023, Danielle posted a photo with Gary alongside her eldest daughter Ella, whom she shares with a former partner Adam Willis. She captioned the photo "Our annual Christmas dinner", and Gary shared the picture with the comment, "Always a delight".

The sports presenter previously explained how he continues to keep in touch with his ex, and Danielle's current husband never gets 'jealous' of their relationship.
"He's not got a jealous bone in his body," Gary said to the Radio Times. "We get on really well. We go out for dinner when I'm in LA. It might be unusual and people might go, 'That's weird ' but, frankly, I don't care. What is normal? Is it better to get divorced and end up fighting, screaming and shouting? Or is it better to get on if you can?"

Revealed: The staggering amount Florian Wirtz will be paid a WEEK if he completes Liverpool move - with German set to earn more than Virgil van Dijk

Florian Wirtz is set to earn a staggering salary if he completes a move to Liverpool this summer. Arne Slot is looking to splash out to improve an already impressive squad after they won the Premier League and a deal for German playmaker Wirtz is edging closer. They would have to break the Premier League transfer record to secure Wirtz's signature after Bayer Leverkusen priced the 22-year-old at £120million. Liverpool have offered £100m plus an extra £13m in add ons but the German side are holding out on a fee which would overtake the £115m which Chelsea paid Brighton for Moses Caicedo. The attacking midfielder has made it clear that Liverpool are his choice and a move is reportedly 'considered a done deal'. The Reds will also spend big on Wirtz's salary, with the German set to be handed a five-year contract worth £355,000-a-week, according to Bild. The enormous salary would make him Liverpool's second highest paid player, above the £350,000-a-week Virgil van Dijk earns, but just below Mohamed Salah's weekly £400,000 earnings. Although Liverpool will have to break the bank for Wirtz, he previously admitted he is not motivated by money. 'I don't even care about how much money I have in my account or what I might earn in the future,' he told Sports Illustrated Germany this year. 'Of course, you should make sure you get a good contract. But for me, the sporting perspective is much more important than the money. 'And I think my parents would be angry if I were too fixated on money. After I moved to Leverkusen at 16, my parents managed my salary and sent me €150 (£126) a month. 'That shaped me. It was important to my parents that I didn't do anything stupid with my salary.' The German star is edging closer to an Anfield switch and has been convinced by Slot's clear plan of where he will play in Liverpool's set-up as a No 10. And on Wednesday, Wirtz appeared to nod when asked by MailSport if he was 'excited for Liverpool ' after Germany's Nations League defeat by Portugal. Wirtz would become Liverpool's third signing of the summer, and their second from Leverkusen after the champions scooped Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5m. The right wing back penned a five-year contract at Anfield last week after completing his medical last month.

6 surging Rangers transfer headlines that go beyond Coady and Turgeman as £20m vision faces strict timeline

Russell Martin and sporting director Kevin Thelwell are scouring the globe for new recruits New Rangers boss Russell Martin is looking to add some new talent to the Ibrox dressing room before pre-season kicks off. That gives sporting director Kevin Thelwell until June 23 to snap up some new talent - with Conor Coady and Dor Turgerman on the agenda. ‌ Negotiations have started with Leicester City over a potential deal to bring in experience Coady - while rising talent Turgerman has opened the door to a move by admitting he is ready to leave Maccabi Tel Aviv. ‌ But with the American revolution in full flow at Ibrox, CEO Patrick Stewart has promised Martin he'll be handed a significant chunk of the £20million set to be injected in the Premiership giants by their new owners.. So, who else could be coming in? And who could be shown the door? Record Sport takes a look. Metinho Troyes' midfielder Metinho has caught Rangers' eye after a successful loan at FC Basel last term. But the Light Blues' face a battle to land the £5million-rated star as they prepare for his signature with the Swiss champions - who are looking to make the deal permanent despite not holding an option to buy. BaZ report it is "unclear" if Basel will be able to secure a return and meeting the valuation - leaving the door open for a move to Ibrox. Largie Ramazani Reports in Spain suggest Leeds United's Largie Ramazani is a target for the Light Blues' this summer - just a year on from his £10million move to Elland Road from Almeria. And former Leeds' goalkeeper Paul Robinson has urged the club to cut their losses with the winger, telling MOT Leeds News:" He's struggled to get in the side this season and I think at times, to his detriment, he's been an impact player off the bench. And I think that's maybe how the manager sees him. ‌ "And if they can get better than what they've got, which is what they have to do to stay in the Premier League, he could be one that's allowed to leave. 'He had a little spell of games, didn't he, in the Championship, but didn't play regularly, week in and week out. And he may be one where Leeds need to cut their cloth accordingly. He may be one that's allowed to move on.' Cyriel Dessers The striker has already revealed he has interest from Greece this summer - but while on international duty he has set himself the goal of scoring more for Rangers. ‌ When asked about his lack of recent caps for Nigeria, he said: 'I'm not the one making the choices. So, the only thing I can do is to perform well and score goals at my club … to ensure that I'm ready to be called up. 'Once I'm called upon, I should be able to show what I can do for the team. That I would have to do with goals, hard work and dedication,' ‌ Nedim Bajrami Nedim Bajrami will hope to impress his new boss when he returns for pre-season - with Record Sport understanding the Albanian is keen to stay in Glasgow and fight for his place in the team. After a disappointing first season in Scotland, reports in Albania suggest that clubs in Germany and Italy are on alert for a potential deal. Harry Darling He has already been signed twice by Russell Martin at MK Dons and then for Swansea City - but Record Sport understands Rangers are currently not in the race for his signature as his contract ticks down. Director of football Richard Montague says Swansea remains hopeful Harry Darling will sign a new deal with the club - despite reports that Norwich City are leading the race for the soon-to-be free agent. ‌ He told Wales Online: 'The ball is very much in Harry's court. "We made him what we thought was a very strong offer and I believe he would think is a very strong offer. Jamie Vardy It would be a landmark signing for the new owners - and Rangers are said to be among the club chasing Jamie Vardy after his Leicester City exit. ‌ The signing race for the 38-year-old appears to have lost a club - with Wrexham transfer consultant Les Reed telling the i: "Let's take an equivalent of Jamie Vardy. "Everyone thinks he's out of contract, there's no transfer fee, Wrexham could do that. You're talking about players who are on £140,000 a week. "We are a million miles away from that. There is a certain level of Premier League player who, if they are on £100k to 150k-a-week, are still going to get closer to that if they move to the MLS or Saudi Arabia than if they go to Wrexham." The 37-year-old also insisted he had VIP tickets for a meet and greet with former Rangers stars. But his victims called in the police after eventually realising they had been duped by Glen. It lead to him appearing in the dock at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week. He pleaded guilty to defrauding five victims a total of £1,665 in a year-long scam from 2022 to January 2023. Glen, of the city's Townhead, could have faced a jail-term but Sheriff Anna Reid ordered him to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work. Emma McShane was his first victim after getting in touch for tickets for ex-One Direction star Styles. She paid £400 and Glen then said he would post the briefs through her letterbox on the day of the concert. He then claimed there had been an unexpected issue. Fiscal Leo McGinn told the court: 'He said he would provide a refund and in the following days he gave various excuses as to why he did not. 'A partial refund was eventually given to Miss McShane.' Calvin Harris hits back with furious TikTok video after being accused of COPYING new single by 90s popstar Glen was also contacted by Nicola Drummond on Instagram about a Calvin Harris gig. Miss Drummond sent Glen £100 to Glen's bank account but the tickets never appeared. It was only after she alerted police that the scammer refunded the £100. The court heard Glen's school friend Michaela Barr bought four tickets for the TRNSMT music festival in Glasgow. She coughed up £290 only for Glen to claim the briefs were provided on a 'first come, first served basis'. Miss Barr was forced to claim the cash back from her bank. Stephanie Delaney - another ex-schoolmate - sent him £130 for Justin Bieber tickets and after repeat messages about a refund he coughed up just £50. The court heard Nicola Cragg - a friend of seven years - was another he swindled. She had contacted him to buy six tickets costing £745 for a 'VIP football event' at Glasgow's Hilton Hotel featuring ex-Rangers stars. Mr McGinn said: 'Miss Cragg became suspicious in August 2022 and asked Glen to confirm the venue of the event. 'Glen said there had been a mix up with the tickets, that part of the event had been cancelled and £300 was owed to her.' The briefs did show up on Miss Cragg's Ticketmaster account - but she never got the rest of her money. Kevin Corr, defending, told the court Glen claimed to have had contacts in the event industry and had been known to legitimately sell tickets in the past. He added: 'He fell into alcohol and substance misuse which was a factor on his life. 'This led to him burying his head in the sand to the ticket arrangements that went on.' Glen has previously featured on the 'Scotland Scammers' Facebook page outing fraudsters. The message claimed 'a broken hearted little girl' had spent her own money hoping to see US singer Olivia Rodrigo while another user claimed their daughter had been tricked into handing over cash for Taylor Swift.
