Volkswagen Polo Edition 50 celebrates, well guess…

Auto Expressa day ago

Volkswagen has revealed a new Polo Edition 50 to celebrate the popular supermini's half century of existence. Priced from £26,350, it'll be available in what VW calls limited numbers in the UK, with sales kicking off later this month.
Unique to the Polo Edition 50 is the Crystal Blue paintwork, further enhanced by 17-inch alloy wheels and unique Edition 50 badges. Uprated LED front and rear lights are also standard fit, helping give the whole car an almost luxurious feel above and beyond the usual found in the supermini class. Inside, VW has fitted more Edition 50 badges, plus a gloss black dashboard insert and privacy glass on the rear windows. Equipment has also been upgraded with a panoramic glass roof, dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera and keyless access and starting.
Under the bonnet is a single 89bhp three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine option, matched to a five-speed manual transmission. There's no sign of a dual-clutch option, or more powerful powertrains, leading to an unusual combination of a very high equipment list paired with one of the lower-specification engines.
Yet while it might be easy to sign this special edition off as a rather thin effort in celebrating 50 years of an iconic model like the Polo, VW has much bigger plans later in the year when its all-electric ID.2, or ID.Polo, arrives as the lynchpin for the brand's entire future line up.
While the Polo isn't going anywhere quite yet, it'll be the new ID.2 which represents VW's actual celebration of offering an affordable model to buyers wanting the Volkswagen experience, just as the first Polo did 50 years ago. Only now, it won't have a combustion engine.

So what's there to high-five about now, Ms Reeves? Critics blast Chancellor's tax and spend plans - as it emerges the economy SHRANK by 0.03 per cent

Rachel Reeves ' plan to renew the British economy was left in tatters yesterday after figures revealed it was slamming into reverse. The Office for National Statistics said gross domestic product shrank by 0.3 per cent in April – the worst monthly performance for a year and a half. It came less than 24 hours after the Chancellor declared that only Labour could fix Britain as she set out the Government's spending plans. Yesterday she admitted that the latest numbers were 'clearly disappointing'. Yet much of the blame for the slump was laid squarely at her own door – with firms pointing to the impact of Ms Reeves' £25billion raid on employer national insurance. Donald Trump 's tariff wars and the end of a stamp duty holiday also took their toll. It added to the growing sense of disenchantment with Labour's handling of the economy as firms also face higher business rates and a raft of new workers' rights. The figures will knock the wind out of the Chancellor's sails after the UK had appeared to enjoy a much brighter start to the year, with GDP growing by 0.7 per cent in the first quarter – the fastest pace among the G7 group of advanced economies. Tory business spokesman Andrew Griffith said: 'It's bad news that growth has fallen but when you introduce a £25billion jobs tax, hike business rates, drive investors overseas and spawn hundreds of pages of red tape, lower growth is precisely what you get. 'You can't tax and spend your way to growth. The quicker this socialist Government wakes up to that, the better.' Separate figures today from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation showed the number of those seeking jobs has seen the biggest increase in four and a half years, as redundancies surge and work opportunities shrink. And evidence mounted that entrepreneurs are becoming fed up with Labour's anti-business policies, as a survey from accountancy firm S&W showed 39 per cent were considering moving their companies abroad because a lack of support. It came as Tesco, Britain's biggest supermarket, said costs being piled on to it by the Government were resulting in higher prices for consumers. 'There are definitely continued inflationary pressures on the market,' said chief executive Ken Murphy. 'I think you've got to look at things like the impact of all the new taxation and regulatory costs on the industry.' The downturn in April was the worst since October 2023 and bigger than the 0.1 per cent contraction expected by economists. The figures covered a period when President Trump introduced his 'Liberation Day' tariffs that caused a wave of market turbulence and upended decades of global trading arrangements. They showed a £2billion slump in UK goods exports to the US, the biggest fall on records going back to 1997. There was also a big drop in output from the car industry – one of the sectors worst affected by tariffs. And the end of the stamp duty holiday took its toll as a surge in market activity at the start of the year, as buyers rushed to beat the deadline, screeched to a halt. The deteriorating picture will only add to fears that the Chancellor will raise taxes again this autumn. It follows figures earlier this week showing the economy has lost more than a quarter of a million jobs since her last Budget. Suren Thiru, of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, said: 'These figures suggest that the UK's economic fortunes took a notable nosedive in 'Awful April'. 'April's decline is probably the start of a more sobering period for the UK economy with the damage from spiralling costs and intensifying global uncertainty set to slow growth sharply this quarter. Weaker growth makes generating the revenue Government needs to support its sizable spending plans more difficult, increasing the chances of further tax rises in the autumn Budget.'

Cadillac sweep front row in Le Mans 24 Hours qualifying

June 12 (Reuters) - Cadillac locked out the front row in qualifying for the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race for the first time on Thursday with Britain's Alex Lynn securing pole position. Lynn set a best time of three minutes 23.166 seconds in the number 12 Team Jota Cadillac at the Sarthe circuit with New Zealand's Earl Bamber putting the sister 38 car alongside and 0.167 slower. Lynn shares his car with compatriot Will Stevens and Frenchman Norman Nato while Bamber's teammates are 2009 Formula One world champion Jenson Button and French four-times Champ Car champion Sebastien Bourdais. "I can't tell you how much I wanted this," said Lynn, who missed out on pole last year by a mere 0.138, over the team radio. "One tenth last year hurt a lot. "I'm truly honoured to be able to put in a performance like that in front of everyone and deliver for Cadillac in the way they deserve," he added after getting out of the car. "This is a magical circuit and this is a special feeling. I can't describe it. We will enjoy this tonight, have a good sleep and re-set." GM-owned Cadillac are the first American marque to take outright pole at Le Mans since Ford in 1967. The number five Porsche Penske was third fastest, after threatening to take pole, with France's Julien Andlauer, Denmark's Michael Christensen and France's Mathieu Jaminet. The number 15 BMW qualified in fourth place with Belgian Dries Vanthoor, Swiss-Italian Raffaele Marciello and Danish former F1 driver Kevin Magnussen. Defending champions Ferrari, outright winners for the past two years, had Italian Antonio Fuoco, Denmark's Nicklas Nielsen and Spaniard Miguel Molina in seventh place in last year's winning car number 50. The 93rd edition of the race starts on Saturday at 1600 local (1400GMT).

New Zealand PM Luxon to meet President Xi in China, then head to Europe

WELLINGTON, June 13 (Reuters) - New Zealand's Prime Minister Christopher Luxon will visit China and Europe next week, meeting with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang and leaders of the European Union, the government said in a statement on Friday. 'China is New Zealand's largest trading partner and a vital part of our economic story,' Luxon said. 'The challenging global outlook makes it vital that we are sharing perspectives and engaging China on issues that matter to New Zealand.' This is Luxon's first visit to China since he became prime minister in late 2023. His predecessor, Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, visited in June 2023. The visit to China will focus on growing trade, which was worth over NZ$38 billion ($23 billion) last year, as well as look to strengthen education and tourism links and to maximize opportunities for New Zealand businesses, the government said. Luxon will then head to Europe to undertake bilateral visits to Brussels and The Hague where he will meet with leaders, including from the EU, to discuss trade, security, and the shifting geopolitical landscape, the statement said. He will also participate in the NATO summit in the Netherlands and hold one-on-one talks with several NATO leaders. 'Prosperity is only possible with security, and our discussions will focus on connections between the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific security environments,' Luxon said.
