In Conversation with Upasana Taku: Fintech, Family Holidays & Finding Balance
In a candid conversation with Khyati Rajvanshi on Magical Memories, presented by Club Mahindra in association with The Indian Express, Mobikwik co-founder Upasana Taku shares the milestones and memories that shaped her journey. From Kerala holidays to California road trips, her story is one of resilience, purpose, and joy beyond entrepreneurship.
Before boardrooms and balance sheets, Upasana grew up in the quiet towns of Gandhidham and Surat. Her childhood was joyful and rooted in education, music, and middle-class values. 'We were not well-to-do, but we were always happy,' she recalls. With a physicist father and a music teacher mother, her early life was anything but ordinary.
'I was very tomboyish,' she laughs, recalling cricket games and aunties noting her bowling. While studies, debates, and books were key, rare holidays left lasting memories. 'I still remember our big vacation to Ooty, Kodaikanal, and Kovalam. That's when I first tasted beer at 16, on a beach with grilled fish and my whole family around. It's a core memory.'
Upasana started her career in U.S. financial services, but trips to India revealed a huge gap in digital finance. 'In 2007-8, online payments in India were barely a thing,' she recalls. 'And I kept thinking – there's a billion people here, and so much could change.'
Determined to make a difference, she co-founded Mobikwik with her partner (now husband), describing the journey as an 'expedition like Everest.' 'There were days we didn't know if we'd survive it,' she admits. 'But it was worth every step.'
For Upasana, holidays are intentional, not extravagant. 'We recently sat down and counted our trips post-parenthood and realised we needed more,' she laughs. Some trips, like their Pacific Coast Highway road trip, are about adventure. 'Everyone at Pismo Beach definitely knew the Punjabis had arrived,' she quips. Slovenia is a favourite: 'From hiking to kayaking in Lake Bled, to cycling through the countryside, it was just the three of us, and it was magical.'
Upasana offers her advice for those balancing business and life, especially women entrepreneurs: 'If possible, don't start a company with your partner', she says candidly. 'But if you do, set boundaries early. Respect work hours. Make sure you enjoy life.' Her mantra is clear: focused work, intentional breaks, and never missing out on life in the name of hustle. 'We all burn out if we don't get enough rest, relax or unwind. But when we come back, we come back stronger.'

Building Pune: How a proposed 25-km flyover can ease traffic congestion on Pune-Solapur highway
The Maharashtra government has decided to address traffic congestion on the Pune-Solapur highway by constructing a 25-km flyover from Hadapsar to Yavat, according to officials. The project will be implemented by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC). In a recent resolution, the government announced that the elevated route from Hadapsar to Yavat on National Highway 65, between Pune and Solapur, will be developed to address traffic issues. 'Traffic jams are witnessed on the existing highway. The route is important for Pune and Solapur district to transport agricultural products, industrial goods and for other commercial purposes,' said Pradnya Walke, a Deputy Secretary in the state government. The 25-km six-lane flyover will be constructed from Hadapsar to Yavat on the existing highway, which will also be expanded to six lanes underneath. Also, a 6.5-km stretch of the highway from Yavat to Solapur will be expanded to six lanes. 'The estimated project cost is Rs 5,262.36 crore, which will be implemented on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis. The state government will impose a toll on all vehicles once the project opens for public use,' said an MSIDC officer. The toll will only be collected through FastTag, GPS, or other advanced technology systems as specified by the MSIDC. He added that the state government will review the toll rates every three years. The state government will provide funds for existing highway expansion only, and the remaining work will be done through a public-private partnership. If the proposed flyover has to be diverted due to the proposed Pune Metro rail line, then the MSIDC will have to seek permission from the state government. The proposed flyover on the Pune-Solapur highway is similar to the proposed Wagholi-Shirur flyover on the Pune-Ahmednagar highway and the greenfield project between Pune and Aurangabad. The state government aims to improve the traffic situation on highways while also reducing the impact at entry points and within the city of Pune. Plans are in place to divert heavy vehicles through a proposed ring road that will connect all highways passing through the city. The construction of the flyover from Wagholi to Shirur is expected to begin soon, while the missing link on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway is nearing completion. This missing link, which bypasses Lonavala on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, is expected to save passengers over half an hour in travel time and reduce fuel consumption for vehicles. From Dwarka Expressway to Golf Course Extension, places in Delhi-NCR where home prices have risen the most in 10 years
If you bought a house in Dwarka Expressway a decade ago, chances are its value has almost tripled, and in Greater Noida, its value in the same period has grown by a factor of 3.25, according to a report by ANAROCK Research. 'The reason for the price rise is largely because of the various infrastructure developments, and improved connectivity in these areas, which inevitably boosted homebuyer demand over the years. Moreover, these were the top areas with maximum new supply in the last several years,' Santhosh Kumar, Vice Chairman, ANAROCK Group, told The Indian Express. 'Sales too remained significantly high in the areas over the years as developers sought to launch projects here based on homebuyer demand,' Kumar added. As per data gathered by ANAROCK Research, here are the top five areas where real estate prices have appreciated the most from 2015 to 2025 (till date): Greater Noida West saw the maximum price appreciation of 225 per cent during the period, from Rs 2,750 per square foot in 2015 to Rs 8,950 per sq ft in Quarter 1 (Q1) of 2025. New Gurgaon was the second top locality that saw average property prices rise by 215 per cent during the period. They rose from approximately Rs 3,700 per sq ft in 2015 to nearly Rs 11,670 per sq ft in Q1 2025. Dwarka Expressway in Gurgaon saw average prices rise by 160 per cent during the same period, from Rs 4,730 per sq ft to nearly Rs 12,300 per sq ft as of Q1 2025. Sohna saw an average property price rise of 88 per cent, from Rs 3,600 per sq ft in 2015 to nearly Rs 6,780 per sq ft in Q1 2025. Golf Course Extension saw average prices rise by 108 per cent during the period. They rose from Rs 6,500 per sq ft in 2015 to Rs 13,500 per sq ft in Q1 2025.
