Luciano Spalletti says he has been sacked as Italy head coach
Luciano Spalletti says he has been sacked as Italy head coach ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Spalletti confirmed the news at his news conference on Sunday ahead of Italy's World Cup qualifier against Moldova. That followed increased pressure after Spalletti's side opened their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 3-0 defeat by Norway on Friday, a result which Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma described as 'not acceptable'.

Spalletti took charge of Italy in August 2023, replacing Roberto Mancini. He oversaw a difficult 2024 European Championship campaign as they exited with a 2-0 defeat by Switzerland in the round of 16, winning just one match in the tournament. The 66-year-old has won 11 of his 23 matches in charge of Italy.
Italy reached the knockout stages of the UEFA Nations League but were ousted by Germany in the quarter-final after a 5-4 aggregate defeat.
Four-time champions Italy have not qualified for the World Cup since 2014, despite winning Euro 2020 under Mancini. They sit fourth of five in their qualifying group for the 2026 edition with zero points, but have played one match as opposed to two so far due to their participation in the Nations League.
Spalletti led Napoli to the Serie A title in the 2022-23 campaign, the club's first Scudetto in 33 years.

Real Madrid star hits new milestone with latest international goal
Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé has on Sunday secured for himself another altogether impressive goalscoring feat. This comes owing to the 26-year-old's latest efforts on the international front. France are currently locked in action, in a Nations League 3rd-place playoff meeting with fellow heavyweights Germany. Advertisement Mbappé, for his part, was in from the off in the clash, leading the line for Didier Deschamps' Les Bleus. And the Real Madrid man has since gone on to make his presence firmly felt once more. Picked out by Blancos teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni courtesy of a pinpoint ball to the back post, Mbappé did superbly to control, work the ball onto his right foot, before finding the far corner of Marc-André ter Stegen's net. And opening the scoring on the day aside, the former PSG attacker's latest goal has also proven significant when it comes to the history books. This comes with Mbappé having now racked up 50 goals in the colours of France, just seven shy of the country's all-time record. Conor Laird – GSFN

FIGC insist to appoint Claudio Ranieri as Italy coach
The Italian federation led by Gabriele Gravina are not giving up in their pursuit of Claudio Ranieri. After the decision to part ways with Spalletti, FIGC president Gravina has opted to try and convince Claudio Ranieri to lead Italy next. Advertisement According to Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sport, today a summit was held between Ranieri, Florent Ghisolfi and Gian Piero Gasperini, the new Giallorossi coach. Ranieri reiterated his intention to continue acting as Roma's new senior advisor as he would like to keep his word to the Friedkin family, with whom he has established an excellent bond. Nagelsmann upbeat despite France defeat: Good for the overall feeling
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann is pictured during the UEFA Nations League soccer match between Germany and France at Stuttgart Arena. Federico Gambarini/dpa Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann entered the Nations League finals with the intention to deliver a first title since 2017 but then refused to be too downcast after it all went up in smoke. Nagelsmann rather wanted to see the positives from a 2-0 defeat against France in Sunday's match for third place, which came on the heels of a 2-1 semi-final loss against Portugal. Advertisement While the team lacked in almost every aspect on Wednesday in Munich, there was determination and some creativity in Stuttgart where they were however too wasteful, especially in the opening minutes. "The game did us good as far as the overall feeling is concerned, but the result obviously not," Nagelsmann told broadcasters RTL. Looking at World Cup qualifying against Slovakia, Northern Ireland and Luxembourg in autumn, he said: "If we are ready not to invest less than today in the qualifiers then we will win the games." Nagelsmann highlighted that "we showed that we can create chances against top teams despite missing several players" while also conceding that "we must score against such top teams." Advertisement Germany were missing the likes of centre back Antonio Rüdiger, creative Jamal Musiala and forward Kai Havertz for the mini tournament. Nick Woltemade, Karim Adeyemi, Pascal Gross and Niclas Füllkrug had top early chances, and Florian Wirtz hit the post, before France captain Kylian Mbappé scored just before half-time and then set up Michael Olise late on for the second. Germany also had to swallow two video review decisions against them when a penalty call and a goal were nullified. France however could have also scored more in the second half as Nagelsmann admitted "we wanted to force things." Advertisement Captain Joshua Kimmich said: "If you look at the first half, I think we should have been 3-0 up after six minutes. In the second half we lost patience." Germany lost two games in a row for the first time since the early days of Nagelsmann's reign when they were beaten by Turkey and Austria in November 2023. The team has made huge progress since then, with their only defeat prior to this week coming against eventual champions Spain in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals. The Nations League shows that Germany may not have enough depth like other big teams and that a 100% effort is required in every match against such high quality opponents. Advertisement The Bild paper said on its website that "many question marks remain ahead of the 2026 World Cup", where four-time champions Germany are desperate to do better than in their group stage exits in 2018 and 2022. "Are we perhaps not able to match the real top teams?" Bild asked, while for Kicker sports magazine this is a fact: "A lot is missing from the world's best."
