10,300 Indian illegal immigrants caught at US border in 2025. That's a 70% dip

There has been a 70% decline in Indians attempting to illegally enter the US between January and May 2025, with 10,382 Indian nationals, primarily from Gujarat, arrested during this period, seeking to enter the United States. This also included 30 unaccompanied minors. The development comes amid tighter border controls and raids on illegal immigrants under President Donald Trump. The data was released by US Customs and Border Protection (USCBP).advertisement
This is a substantial decrease from 34,535 arrests between January-May 2024 to 10,382 in the same period in 2025, averaging 69 daily arrests. During the same corresponding period in 2024, the daily arrest average was around 230 under the Joe Biden administration.Anticipating Donald Trump's return to power, many of these smuggling syndicates began scaling back their operations in late 2024, according to a report in The Times of India."The moment it became clear Trump would likely win again, routes started drying up," a source connected to a Gujarat-based human smuggling ring told TOI.The desire to migrate remains strong, but smugglers have either reduced their activity or increased their fees, and fears of tougher deportation policies are very real, according to the source.USCBP data also reflects a wider drop in border apprehensions across all nationalities – from 81,492 in January down to 28,617 in February – while it remained over 29,000 in the next three months. A total of 590,069 illegal immigrants were caught while entering the US, according to the data.advertisementA total of 1,233,959 illegal immigrants were caught during the same corresponding period in 2024.DATA OF UNACCOMPANIED MINORS FROM INDIAIn fiscal year 2024, US authorities apprehended over 500 unaccompanied Indian minors. Now, under the Trump administration, there's a much tougher stance on "unaccompanied children" left at the border by their parents.Thousands of individuals, including those from India, leave their children on the US-Mexico or US-Canada border in the hope that they will be taken in and granted American citizenship.Reports suggest children are often in the age bracket of 12-17, but sometimes they are younger also.According to an April 2024 report by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), there are an estimated 2.2 lakh (220,000) undocumented Indians living in the US. Since January 2025, more than 332 Indians have been deported.Yet, people from India keep trying to enter the US, often via perilous routes. Migrants sometimes take risky sea routes offered by smugglers to bypass heavily fortified land borders. On May 9, a tragic boat accident occurred near Del Mar, California, in which a 14-year-old Indian boy and his 10-year-old sister died off the coast of California. These boats often depart from Mexico's coast, sometimes travelling hundreds of miles.advertisementSince October 2024, the US Coast Guard has tracked 277 vessels suspiciously entering US waters from Mexico in the San Diego area.- Ends

Argentina holds the world's second-largest shale gas reserves and the fourth-largest shale oil reserves. It also has significant conventional oil and gas deposits, positioning it as a potential long-term energy partner for India. The country is also rich in critical minerals such as lithium, copper, and rare earth elements. These are important for India's plans for clean energy and industrial growth. Along with Bolivia and Chile, Argentina is part of the Lithium Triangle, a region that holds a large share of the world's lithium reserves. Lithium plays a central role in rechargeable batteries, which are used in electric vehicles, mobile phones, laptops, and systems that store renewable energy. He is the first foreign leader to receive this award. After Argentina, Modi will travel to Brazil to attend the 17th Brics Summit and then make a state visit. His final stop will be Namibia.

Masterstroke by Modi govt as India, Greece, Cyprus, Armenia may form a..., bad news for Pakistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan due to... Pakistan is teaming up with its friends Turkey and Azerbaijan to work against India. We saw clear signs of this in May during 'Operation Sindoor.' After terrorists hit Pahalgam and India struck back at camps inside Pakistan, Turkey and Azerbaijan openly backed Pakistan. Turkey even sent military help. India has decided to answer this partnership by creating a new group in West Asia, like a mini‑'Quad.' The four members are India, Greece, Cyprus and Armenia. Each of these three countries has its own disputes with Turkey or Azerbaijan, so they share India's worries. India's ties with Armenia have grown stronger When fighting broke out recently between Israel and Iran, India asked Armenia to help rescue Indians who were trapped. About 110 Indians crossed the Nurduz‑Agarak border into Armenia and then flew home on a special plane. This rescue showed how close India and Armenia have become and how the new four‑nation group could raise more pressure on Pakistan, Turkey and Azerbaijan. Cyprus also supports India A few days ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited West Asia and Eastern Europe. During this trip, he also went to Cyprus. While there, he visited a location from where one can see Northern Cyprus, a region under Turkish control. This move was seen as a strong and clear message to Turkey. India has openly supported Cyprus's sovereignty and territorial unity. The two countries have also announced a strategic partnership to strengthen ties further. In the near future, Cyprus may buy a large number of weapons from India. This could include advanced weapons like the BrahMos missile. This growing defence and diplomatic bond is another sign of India's plan to counter the group of Pakistan, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. India and Greece: An old friendship India and Greece have shared a friendly relationship for a long time. This bond became even stronger in 2023 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Athens in August. During the visit, the two countries signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreement and agreed to deepen their military ties. PM Modi even called Greece the 'gateway to Europe' for India. Both countries also have common concerns especially regarding Pakistan and Turkey which brings them even closer. Today, the defence partnership between India and Greece is growing stronger. Indian Navy warships now make stopovers in Greece during their visits to the Mediterranean Sea.
