Josh Taylor retires from boxing due to eye injury

Leader Live2 days ago
Taylor underwent eye surgery last year and has been advised by specialists that to continue could endanger his eyesight.
The 34-year-old will go down in history as one of Scotland's greatest boxers, having won and then unified the world light-welterweight titles.
Taylor said in a statement: 'As has been publicised before, I've had a recurring issue with my eye that unfortunately means I now have to call time on my career or risk losing my eyesight.
'While the fighter in me always wants to box on, I know I have to listen to the medical professionals and save me from myself.
'It is certainly not the way I wanted to bow out but I have to listen to the doctors and those around me.'
Taylor, from Prestonpans, turned professional one year after winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
He claimed the IBF version of the world light-welterweight title with a points win over Ivan Baranchyk in Glasgow in May 2019, and added the WBA 'super' title by beating Regis Prograis in his next bout.
Taylor went on to beat previously undefeated Jose Ramirez to become the undisputed champion in Las Vegas in May 2021.
Taylor suffered his first defeat to Teofimo Lopez in New York in June 2023 and was also beaten in a rematch by British rival Jack Catterall in his following bout.
After undergoing surgery, Taylor returned for a bout against Ekow Essuman in Glasgow in May this year, but suffered his third consecutive defeat.

Wales boost fitness in hunt for Lynn's first win

Women's summer series: Australia v WalesVenue: Ballymore, Brisbane Date: Saturday, 26 July Kick-off: 05:00 BSTCoverage: Watch on BBC Sport online and BBC iPlayer, listen on Radio Wales, Radio Cymru and BBC Sounds Georgia Evans says she and her Wales team-mates are the fittest they have ever been after being pushed to their limits in coach Sean Lynn said a lack of strength and conditioning was a concern after Wales finished bottom of the 2025 Women's Six Nations, his first campaign in the summer, Lynn's players trained in army boot camps and also spent time running up Wales' largest sand dune in preparation for a two-Test tour of Australia and next month's Rugby World Cup in England. "He (Lynn) wasn't lying when he said he was going to put us in a dark place, he definitely did that," said back-rower Evans."He set us standards before we left for off-season of what he expected when he came back in, so the work didn't stop, it was about grinding away." Evans thinks the hard work will pay off as Wales go in search of a first win under Lynn during their trip to take on the Wallaroos in Brisbane on Saturday before a repeat fixture in Sydney on Friday, 1 August - the day before the third British and Irish Lions Test in the same recorded their first victory over Australia at Rodney Parade last September, but suffered a sobering defeat when the two sides met again in South Africa at WXV2."It (pre-season) has been really tough, but looking to your left and looking to your right, you're seeing PBs (personal bests) week-in, week-out. We're getting fitter," said Evans."I think everyone is glad to see the back of block one purely because now we're into more rugby."We've got the ball in our hands way more than we did before. Just getting around the park, it makes life a lot easier when you can breathe a bit better. The tour of Australia will show us where we are rather than just training against each other." On a personal note, Evans will be hoping to hit the same levels which made her a standout player in the Six Nations in terms of tackle count and ball carrying. The 27-year-old Saracens star can play in the second row but is hoping to make the number eight jersey her own amid some stiff competition."I felt I did myself justice in the Six Nations but it's about building - the job is never done," Evans said."Wales have some world-class players. Unfortunately all of them play in my position, so it's all about that competition and making sure they're pushing you for your shirt and making you're a better player."I'm looking forward to it and hopefully I'll get my chance."

Eva Okaro relishing trailblazer status ahead of World Championships

Okaro became the first black British swimmer to compete in the pool at an Olympic Games at the age of just 17 in Paris last summer when she was part of the women's 4 x 100m freestyle relay team which reached the final. Now 18, she is heading for the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore delighted to be inspiring other young swimmers. Sprint Queens 👑👑 Scarlett Humphrey (S11) takes the Multi-classification British title by a single point, with Eva Okaro setting a big lifetime best to win the Women's 50m Freestyle A Final secure ➕ secure her Singapore world champs team place 👉 — Aquatics GB (@Aquatics_GB) April 17, 2025 Okaro, who won the 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly at the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships in April, said: 'I think it's a privilege to be in this role and I like to be a role model to especially young girls of any ethnicity, any colour, it doesn't matter. 'But it's just nice to know that I'm not in this alone as well because they don't just look up to me, but they encourage me and want to see me do well and I think that's also a big thing, just knowing that there are people behind me and people that I don't even know that just believe in me. 'That helps a lot with my confidence and being able to perform.' Asked if she was aware anecdotally of youngsters who had been encouraged by her rise to prominence, Okaro added: 'I've had a few messages before and I've been stopped a couple of times by little girls who are basically just telling me that they keep swimming because of me, which is really nice.' Okaro, who still trains with her twin sister Izabella, is scheduled to compete in the 50m and 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly in Singapore, although is yet to make a decision on whether to take part in all three after missing a week and a half of training while she sat her A-levels. Whatever happens at the World Championships, she will be heading for the United States later this year to continue her athletic and academic careers at the University of Texas, glad her exams are out of the way. She said: 'It's definitely made me feel more relaxed, 100 per cent, because little things like even homework or turning up to lessons and waking up at 7.30am for breakfast, stuff like that, I don't have to do that anymore so I can solely be focused on swimming. 'That's definitely something I've got in my locker now and it's just made it a lot easier for me.'

The ultimate guide to Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and AC Milan's football matches in Hong Kong

After much fanfare and waiting, it is finally time for some of the world's best football teams to take to the pitch in Kai Tak Stadium. Premier League clubs Liverpool FC, Arsenal FC, and Tottenham Hotspur FC, as well as the Serie A club AC Milan will all be playing pre-season friendly matches this summer as part of the Hong Kong Football Festival 2025, and footie fans are all abuzz. Read on for all the details of these matches. When are the pre-game training sessions? The three Premier League clubs will indeed be holding open training sessions on July 24, 29, and 30 in Kai Tak Stadium – these will be open for the public to watch in addition to the matches. The Reds will be training on July 24, the Spurs on July 29, and the Gunners on July 30. AC Milan's opening training session will be held on the evening of July 25, in Hong Kong Stadium instead of Kai Tak. Schedule for the pre-season friendly matches Saturday, July 26: Liverpool will face off against AC Milan The last time the Reds were in town was back in 2017, and it's been even longer for the Rossoneri, who last played a game in Hong Kong in 2004. Thursday, July 31: Arsenal will play against Tottenham Hotspur This will be a fantastic opportunity to see the two north London rivals playing outside the British capital city – this is actually also their first match against each other outside of the UK. The last time Hong Kong saw Arsenal was 13 years ago in 2012. What is the seating plan within the Kai Tak Stadium for Liverpool vs AC Milan? Category A seats are located on the east and west sides of the stadium. This means they run the length of the pitch and offer the best view of the match. There is also a special fan zone for Liverpool supporters on the north stand, split into two price categories, while the AC Milan fan zone is on the south stand. Refer to the seating chart below for details. What is the seating plan for the Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur match? As with the previous match, the most expensive seats are along the east and west sides of the stadium. The Arsenal fan zone will be on the south stand, while the Spurs fans will be grouped into the north stand. Are there still any tickets left? As you might expect from a large sporting event with such well-known names, tickets to see Liverpool vs AC Milan and Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur have already long since sold out months ago. However, it seems that there are still some tickets available for the open training sessions for all four teams, so if you didn't manage to snag match tickets, at least you'll still get to watch them in action on the pitch for some time! Things to note before the football matches Physical tickets will need to be picked up at Cityline kiosks before entry. Nine of these kiosks will be available on event days in Kai Tak Sports Park and in the Kai Tak area. There will be security checkpoints in place, so make sure you allocate enough time to get through the checks. Re-entry to the venue will not be permitted after tickets have been scanned. What items are not allowed in the stadium? Go through the list of prohibited items below to make sure you won't need to waste time putting your belongings in storage on the match days. Footballs or any other variety of balls Whistles Plastic, glass, or metal containers of any capacity Canned or bottled beverages Food (excluding baby food and medicine) Light-up banners and cheering materials Professional cameras, camera equipment, tripods, or recording devices Selfie sticks Wheeled recreational devices including skateboards, bicycles, and scooters Folding stools, chairs, and footrests Folding ladders or long umbrellas Laser pointers and glow sticks Drones or remote-controlled flying devices Bags, boxes, or luggages larger than 38 x 30 x 20cm Balloons or inflatable items In case you do need to store items, there is a baggage storage area on level 1M of the Kai Tak Arena, near Central Square. There are also lockers available in Kai Tak Mall 2 and the Airside mall. Will there be merch stands? Yes, there will be merchandise on sale. One counter will be located at Central Square within Kai Tak Sports Park, while the other can be found at Dining Cove towards the waterfront. These pop-up stores will open at 2pm on match days and training days, and are also available for the public to purchase without match tickets. During the training days for Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal on July 19 and 30, a third official merch stand will also be open at level two of Celebration Hall 2 in the Kai Tak Main Stadium. This pop-up stall will be available to ticket holders. Refer to the map above for the merch stand locations, marked in green and red. How to get to Kai Tak Stadium Traffic tends to get tedious when there are big events in Kai Tak, so the best way to get there is by MTR. Ticketholders for gates A, B, B2, and C should alight at Sung Wong Toi MTR station and take exit D. Security checkpoint 2 is at the West Bridge, while security checkpoint 1 is located towards Dining Cove, near gate C. Ticketholders for gates D, D1, E, F, G, H, J, K, and K1 should alight the MTR at Sung Wong Toi or Kai Tak Station, taking exit D at either station. Head towards Central Square, where security checkpoint 3 is located. There are also over 40 bus routes servicing the vicinity of Kai Tak Sports Park from all across Hong Kong. The stadium is a 15-minute walk from the Kai Tak Public Transport Interchange or the bus stop on Shing Kai Road, or a 20-minute walk from the Kowloon City Interchange (Richland Oriental Hotel / Sung Wong Toi Park). If you absolutely must arrive by car, there are taxi pick-up and drop-off points at Kai Tak Stadium, Kai Tak Arena, and along Sung Wong Toi Road. Private cars can head to the drop-off areas at Kai Tak Stadium, Kai Tak Arena, or the Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground. How to leave Kai Tak Stadium Leaving the premises with a stadium full of people can be daunting, but the MTR is still probably your best bet. There will be trains that run later on event days, the latest being the 12.55am service from Kai Tak Station towards Wu Kai Sha. Aside from the aforementioned 40 bus routes servicing the area around Kai Tak Stadium, there will also be special buses on July 26 and 31, running to 11 major destinations such as Central, Siu Sai Wan, Mong Kok, Tseung Kwan O, Tuen Mun, Sheung Shui, the airport, and more. Taxis can pick up passengers from the designated points at Kai Tak Stadium and Kai Tak Arena, while private cars are only allowed to pick up from Muk Wo Street, near exit A of Sung Wong Toi MTR station, or Ma Tau Kok Road.
