Pune: The endless travails of city commuters caused by potholes and shoddy road surfaces of various stretches never seem to end, regardless of the season. Many motorists have pointed out that despite the break in rainfall, road repairs have not gathered pace.
Rohit Datar, a regular commuter on Ganeshkhind Road, told TOI, "Potholes are clearly visible on various roads. At University Chowk, which is always a busy junction, giant craters are slowing down vehicles."
While Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has declared an assurance of finishing road repairs and filling potholes before Aug 20, commuters are not convinced.

Shukrawar Peth resident Ashok Kale said, "Ganesh mandals have already started preparations for pandals.
Road repairs should be completed before Ganeshotsav."
An official from PMC's road department claimed they have deployed vans for each ward for road repairs and resurfacing. "Deputy engineers attached to each area have been asked to visit key road stretches. The work will be expedited in the next few days," the official said.
Another concern expressed by commuters is about the broken and uneven drainage chamber lids posing a risk to motorists — two-wheeler riders in particular.
Bikers highlighted that many lids, despite repairs just a few days ago, have come loose as the cement-concrete used to affix them is of bad quality.
An autorickshaw driver from the Pune railway station area, Chand Shaikh, said, "Drainage lids need to be fixed properly and at road level. The most problematic road stretches in this regard are Ganeshkhind Road, parts of Tilak Road, Bund Garden Road, Pune railway station area, and many stretches on the outskirts."
A civic official told TOI, "For repairs of drainage chamber lids, the road and drainage departments are working in coordination."
However, commuters are unhappy with the result. Prachi Gore, a Navi Peth resident who often uses Karve Road stretch to reach Deccan Gymkhana, said, "Almost all chamber lids from Garware College Chowk to Deccan are in bad condition. They are not fixed properly, uneven, or unstable. This poses a major risk to vehicles."

Motorists fume as Telangana RTA drives up service charges

Hyderabad: Applicants attempting to book slots for various transactions at the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) woke up to a rude shock on Sunday as they found a sudden increase in charges across several services. The revision came into effect at 2 am. The new rate-card shows that RTA has revised fees anywhere from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000 — with a fourfold jump in rates for a no-objection certificate (NOC). Available for Rs 100 until now, every NOC will now cost a motorist Rs 435. The cost for terminating vehicle agreements for four-wheelers has also been substantially increased from Rs 2,135 to Rs 3,135. Even commonly availed costs, right from learners' licence to vehicle hypothecation, have been brought under the new price umbrella. Motorists applying for any licence will have to cough up an additional Rs 100. The only exemptions: Permits, vehicle fitness assessments, taxes on vehicles from other states, permit cancellations, life taxes, and quarterly taxes. In 2022, the Telangana govt had raised life taxes under the Telangana Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1963, with increases ranging from 9% to 19% based on vehicle cost and category. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unsold 2021 Cars Now Almost Free - Prices May Surprise You Unsold Cars | Search Ads Learn More Undo Many applicants, while ruing the sharp rise, also complained about the current revision being implemented surreptitiously without prior public announcement or notification. In fact, the RTA website: is yet to be updated with these new charges. Speaking to TOI, some said that they realised that the fees had been hiked only when they went to their RTA office to avail of a service. 'I tried to secure a learner's licence slot two days ago, when the fee displayed was Rs 450. However, I encountered technical issues and couldn't complete the booking. When I tried again on Sunday, I was surprised to see that the total amount had risen to Rs 550, with the service charge component having increased from Rs 100 to Rs 200,' said K Venkatesh, an applicant from Uppal. Move to increase revenue: RTA RTA officials said that the revision was aimed at enhancing revenue. 'Only service charges, which have remained unchanged for several years, have been increased. However, we need to monitor the situation for at least one month to assess how these increased charges contribute to revenue enhancement,' MM Chandrasekhar Goud, joint transport commissioner (IT & Vigilance), told TOI. Sources, on the other hand, hinted at the move being designed to accommodate tax exemptions being offered to EV buyers. Incidentally, since the Telangana govt implemented its EV policy on Nov 16, 2024, Rs 400 crore (approx) tax has been exempted through sales of more than 50,000 EVs. 'The govt's actions are unfair, as they offer complete tax relief to electric vehicles while parallelly raising service charges,' said M Dayanand, general secretary, Telangana Auto and Motor Welfare Union.'The facilities at their offices lack essential amenities for the public, and applicants are forced to wait in long queues for their turn. It is disappointing that despite these ongoing service deficiencies, the RTA has implemented increased service charges. I urge the govt authorities to reinstate the previous fee structure, in the interest of the public.'

PMPML's new CMD tells officials to devise a plan to bring down e-bus breakdowns within a month

Pankaj Deore, the new chairman and managing director of PMPML, has directed officials to devise a plan to bring down the number of e-bus breakdowns within a month. As many as 160 e-buses, inducted into the fleet of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) in 2019, have been facing multiple breakdowns, raising concern among officials of the transport utility. According to figures provided by PMPML, June recorded a total of 1,127 e-bus breakdowns. Till July 22, 961 e-bus breakdowns were recorded. The transport utility's joint managing director, Nitin Narvekar, admitted e-buses were encountering many breakdowns. "Presently, the e-bus fleet consists of 490 buses operated by private contractors. In 2019, these buses were inducted, and 160 of them joined the fleet in the first phase. These buses are facing multiple breakdowns mainly due to their degrading batteries. We are considering ways to salvage them," the official told TOI. He added that they were trying to conduct battery balancing in these buses to reduce breakdowns. "This is an option we are considering. We will be talking to all private contractors to find a way to reduce the breakdowns. Most buses belonging to private contractors are facing breakdowns. However, e-buses are a concern, and we are looking at other ways to contain the situation," the senior official said. Officials said battery balancing in EVs ensures that all the cells in the battery pack charge and discharge at the same rate, thus maximising their capacity and extending battery lifespan. "Recently, the e-bus I was travelling in suddenly stopped and then did not start. I am paying fares and want proper service. PMPML got e-buses before many other public transport utilities in the country, and it is their job to maintain them properly. The administration is still not serious about controlling the breakdowns," Keshav Rajguru, a resident of Camp said. Senior PMPML officials said Deore recently sent a letter to the Maharashtra chief secretary regarding changes in depot development plan. "The plan was announced around 2-3 years ago and involved private parties being leased land in PMPML depots for setting up commercial establishments for a period of 30 years. The same would be done under BoT (build-operate-transfer) model. The letter mentioned that the lease needed to be increased to 60 years, and only then would it attract private players, and PMPML would get non-fare revenue," another official said.
