Jasprit Bumrah Slammed For 'Pick And Choose' Stance In England Test Series: "Held Back..."

NDTV3 days ago
Former Indian cricket team all-rounder Irfan Pathan criticised Jasprit Bumrah for his 'pick and choose' approach in the recently-concluded Test series against England. The BCCI made it clear ahead of the Test series that Bumrah will not play all the five matches. The pacer ended up playing three games and despite India trailing 1-2 with one match to go, he was rested to manage his workload. Pathan pointed out that Bumrah was holding back on certain occassions and cited the example of the Lord's Test where he could have bowled for a longer period of time against Joe Root.
'There were moments, like when a sixth over was needed. I spoke about this during commentary as well. Joe Root had been dismissed by him 11 times, and in that Lord's Test, Bumrah bowled five overs. Just one more over, the sixth, could have pushed harder. I felt he held back a little there. There was also some pick-and-choose, which I've always been against, and that was visible too," Pathan said on YouTube.
Pathan went on to say that although Bumrah did perform well on occasions, he did not live up to the expectations that the team had.
'Bumrah will get six out of ten. Why? The reason is that when you're a senior player, there is a lot of responsibility on you to win matches. He played in three Tests, and India didn't win any of them."
'Let's go back to the first Test. He took five wickets in the first innings but didn't get a single wicket in the second innings. At that crucial time, when your main match-winner is expected to step up and win the game, it's up to him to find a way, whether it's over the wicket, around the wicket, yorkers, slower balls, bouncers, to create pressure. In the Leeds Test, we didn't see that pressure being built. England ended up scoring heavily, and Bumrah didn't take a single wicket, which was a bit surprising. And this didn't happen just once,' he added.

Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers caught in wrong-number chaos as Rajat Patidar calls police on Chattisgarh boys

Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar had an unusual incident with two cricket fans from Chhattisgarh as he tried to reclaim his mobile number. The Indian batter's previous mobile number had been inactive for over 90 days, which led his telecom operator to deactivate it and subsequently reassign it, according to an NDTV report. The number was reportedly assigned to a boy from Chhattisgarh named Manish, a resident of the state's Gariaband district. Manish activated the Reliance Jio SIM card in late June, and soon after activation, he and his friend Khemraj noticed the RCB skipper's photograph appearing as the WhatsApp display picture— the first sign that the number had previously belonged to a famous personality. Soon afterwards, the boys began receiving phone calls from prominent personalities like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, who were trying to reach Patidar. Patidar himself also contacted the number, explained the situation to Manish and Khemraj, and stressed how important the number was for him, as coaches, teammates, and personal contacts used it to reach him. However, the boys did not believe it was actually Patidar on the other line and humorously replied, 'And we're MS Dhoni.' The RCB captain then warned them, 'Okay, I'll send the cops.' Just ten minutes later, local police arrived at Manish's residence to mediate the situation. After realizing it was indeed Patidar on the other end, Manish cooperated with the authorities and returned the SIM card. Speaking about the incident to NDTV, Khemraj said, 'I got to speak to Kohli because of a wrong number. My life's goal is complete.' Notably, Patidar had shot to fame earlier this year after RCB appointed him as skipper ahead of the season. The MP-based cricketer not only led his side into the playoffs but also secured their first-ever IPL trophy under his leadership.

Akash Deep Looks Back At Oval's Historic Heroics: 'Pressure Made Us Aggressive'

Last Updated: Akash Deep looked back on India's six-run win at The Oval hat tied the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at 2-2 as a test of belief, pressure and execution. The Oval Test will be remembered as one of India's most hard-fought victories in recent memory, marked by a tense six-run win that levelled the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at 2-2. For Akash Deep, the final day was a test of belief, pressure, and execution. Recalling the mindset when India took the field on the last day of the final Test, Akash was quoted as saying on Revsportz, 'We were bowling on the second day when the wicket was not much help and there was no movement. Our belief was that England is such a team where if you can break partnerships and take 1-2 wickets, then they give you wickets in bunches, and come under pressure. The way they were playing, I felt it would have been very stressful for them to bat under pressure and win the match from there. So, our plan was to just bowl in the right areas and they were under pressure. So, overall it worked out." The pressure intensified when England reached 301/3, chasing 374. In the Indian dressing room, the tension was palpable. 'Yes, it was intense and there was pressure. But I guess that pressure made us aggressive and the game turned out to be good for us. The pressure helped us focus and notice what was going on better. The crowd played a big part in the evening, as it totally changed – cheering for us after cheering for England before that. After playing for so long, the body was very tired but the crowd's energy gave us a lot of enthusiasm," Akash revealed. What Is Akash Deep Talking About? In the match, after England opted to bowl first, they reduced India to 153/6. A 58-run partnership between Karun Nair (57 off 109 balls, with eight fours) and Washington Sundar (26 off 55 balls, with three fours) was the most meaningful part of the inning as India was bundled out for 224 runs. Besides Gus Atkinson's five-wicket haul, Josh Tongue (3/57) also performed well. In the second innings, four-wicket hauls from Siraj (4/86) and Prasidh Krishna (4/62) reduced England to 247, despite a 92-run opening stand between Zak Crawley (64 off 57 balls, with 14 fours) and Ben Duckett (43 off 38 balls, with five fours and two sixes), and a fifty by Harry Brook (53 off 64 balls, with five fours and a six). England led by 23 runs. In India's second innings, key contributions came from Yashasvi Jaiswal (118 off 164 balls, with 14 fours and two sixes), Akash Deep (66 off 94 balls, with 12 fours), Ravindra Jadeja (53 off 77 balls, with five fours) and Washington Sundar (53 off 46 balls, with four boundaries and four sixes). Sundar stitched a very crucial 10th wicket stand with Krishna, with the latter scoring nothing and Sundar doing all the hitting. These efforts took India to 396 runs, giving them a 373-run lead and setting a target of 374 runs for England to win the series. India started well, reducing England to 106/3. However, fine centuries from Harry Brook (111 off 98 balls, with 14 fours and two sixes) and Joe Root (105 off 152 balls, with 12 fours) troubled India with a 195-run stand for the fourth wicket. At one point, England was 317/4 on day four. However, a late surge by Siraj (5/104) and Krishna (4/126) shifted the pressure back to England, and they fell six runs short, being bundled out for 367 runs. Asia Cup 2025: Indian Selectors Face Tough Decisions As Shubhman Gill's Inclusion Splits Opinion, Samson's Spot Under Threat

Asia Cup 2025: The focus has now shifted to the Asia Cup 2025, which kicks off on September 9 in the UAE. The Indian selectors will meet later this month to finalise a 15-member squad, with the official announcement expected in the third week of August. Several positions remain contested, creating a tough balancing act for the selection committee. Selectors Split Over Shubman Gill's Inclusion In a significant development, a Telegraph report revealed that the selectors are divided over Shubman Gill's place in the Asia Cup squad. Gill has been in red-hot form, emerging as one of the top scorers in the IPL and finishing as the leading run-getter in the recently concluded Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy. While some selectors believe Gill deserves a spot in the T20 squad, others are hesitant, citing concerns that a switch to the shortest format could disrupt his rhythm and alter the team's structure. Another factor under consideration is workload management, with India's West Indies Test series scheduled to begin just a week after the Asia Cup. If Gill is picked, either Sai Sudharsan or Yashasvi Jaiswal both of whom impressed in the IPL may have to make way. Sanju Samson Faces Competition for Wicketkeeper Slot Even Sanju Samson's position is far from secure, despite being the favourite for the wicketkeeper-batter role. The report suggests that Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel are also strong contenders, pushing hard for a place in the squad. Siraj and Bumrah May Be Rested Fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj could be given a break after a demanding series against England. The management is keen on resting the pace duo to keep them fresh for upcoming assignments. Spin Department Sparks Interest; Kuldeep's Omission Raises Eyebrows According to the report, Washington Sundar, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel are near certainties, with Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi expected to be named as specialist spinners. However, there is no mention of Kuldeep Yadav, India's premier spinner in recent times, leading to speculation about possible surprises in the spin department.
