Cam Ward's advice to Carson Beck as he takes over as Miami Hurricanes quarterback

Miami Herald25-03-2025
At this point last year, Cam Ward was in the position that Carson Beck is in now. He was the Miami Hurricanes' new quarterback, a veteran who transferred in for his final season of collegiate eligibility hoping to raise his draft stock.
Things worked out well for Ward, who set just about every notable single-season record for a UM quarterback on his way to being a Heisman Trophy finalist and very likely the No. 1 overall pick in next month's NFL draft.
So what advice would Ward give to Beck as he attempts to follow up Ward's efforts?
'I think the biggest thing that I would tell Carson is just be himself and try to win games,' Ward said Monday after UM's Pro Day. 'At the end of the day, they can talk how bad they want about you, but if you win games, you've got the one-up on them.'
Ward led Miami to a 10-3 season in 2024, the Hurricanes' first 10-win season since 2017. They started 9-0 and had an inside track to make both the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Game and the 12-team College Football Playoff before dropping two of their final three regular-season games and then ultimately losing in the Pop-Tarts Bowl to wrap up the campaign.
In his one year at Miami after spending two seasons apiece at FCS-level Incarnate Word and then Washington State, Ward set the Hurricanes' single-season school records for completions (305), passing yards (4,313), passing touchdowns (39) and completion percentage (67.2 percent). He was Miami's first Heisman Trophy finalist since 2002 and could potentially become just the third player in the Hurricanes' storied history to be selected first overall in the NFL Draft, joining quarterback Vinny Testaverde in 1987 and defensive tackle Russell Maryland in 1991.
Beck has a track record of winning from his time at Georgia. He went 24-3 during his two seasons as a starter at Georgia. That included leading the Bulldogs to the SEC Championship Game last season before sustaining a season-ending elbow injury in that game. Beck has not yet gone through a full practice with the Hurricanes while rehabbing that injury.
Statistically, Beck was dominant in 2023, his first season as Georgia's starter. He completed 72 percent of his passes for 3,941 yards and 24 touchdowns against six interceptions.
He took a step back in 2024. In 13 games, he completed 65 percent of his passes for 3,485 yards and 28 touchdowns but also threw 12 interceptions — tied for the most among quarterbacks at Power 4 schools this season — before sustaining the elbow injury in the second half of the SEC Championship Game.
Beck has 51 pass plays of at least 30 yards over the past two years. He's cerebral and knows when to audible at the line of scrimmage.
But Ward said Beck should be able to thrive at Miami. Ward praised offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson's scheme for being quarterback friendly.
'Don't really look at the stat sheet and what I did this year, because at the end of the day, it wasn't hard,' Ward said. 'You're talking about a quarterback playing in coach Dawson's offense. You should at least throw 30 touchdowns a year.'

WVU quarterbacks to throw more than Rich Rodriguez is used to

MORGANTOWN — If you think of a quarterback on a Rich Rodriguez-led West Virginia team from the early 2000s, most would think of quarterback Pat White. White was Rodriguez's most successful quarterback, leading the Mountaineers to a 33-5 record as a starter under Rodriguez, and finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2007. White was a decent passer, but he was known more for his running ability. He rushed for 4,480 yards in four seasons with the Mountaineers and had his two best seasons under Rodriguez. Part of White's rushing success was his athleticism, but more was due to Rodriguez's offensive scheme, which focused more on the quarterback run. Through all of his stops, Rodriguez's quarterbacks rushed a lot, and it'll be the same in his first season back in 2025. However, Rodriguez said this year they'll 'probably' pass more than people think. 'We are putting a lot more pass plays in than run plays,' Rodriguez said. That doesn't mean the West Virginia quarterbacks aren't going to run. Rodriguez clarified he's still going to run his quarterbacks a lot, which was the case during WVU's Gold and Blue Spring Showcase and in the limited time the media could watch at preseason practice. WVU showed a bunch of designed quarterback runs at the Aug. 8 practice, and it didn't matter who was at quarterback. Rodriguez thinks all five quarterbacks have the ability to run the ball the way his offense needs to. 'They don't have to be Pat White fast to be a 1,000-yard rusher,' Rodriguez said. 'We don't have any slugs back there. We're running them.' Quarterback Nicco Marchiol, who many project as the favorite to be the starter, said he could be a 1,000-yard rusher if Rodriguez needed him to. Marchiol wasn't the biggest runner in his limited playing time over three seasons, but Marchiol said he's in the best running shape he's ever been. The more pass plays come down to the strengths of the quarterbacks. White's strength was his athleticism, so the offense was built around letting him run wild. Rodriguez is still learning what his quarterbacks' strengths are, but one of them is their arm strength. 'All five can really throw it,' Rodriguez said. 'I've never had that many that could throw it that well, as far as arm strength goes and all that. There's not really a past play that's out there, or a route package that is out there that we're like, well, we can't do that because we don't have the arm strength to make that throw.' Rodriguez is also putting in more pass plays because the offensive line is still learning Rodriguez's offense, so pass plays are a bit easier to learn to block. The season is fastly approaching. Rodriguez said this is the last week of install and evaluation, and next week, WVU needs to start game preparation. Rodriguez is still figuring out what he has in his quarterbacks and what he should focus the offense on. It's still going to be very run-heavy, but don't be surprised if the quarterbacks take more deep shots. 'That's certainly a thought for us going into the next two weeks,' Rodriguez said. 'When we tear this thing down, I'm not worried about 50% run plays, 50% pass plays. I'm worried about these are the plays we can execute.'

Michael Penix Jr. has a lot to prove with the Atlanta Falcons in 2025

Former Washington Huskies superstar quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is widely expected to be one of the NFL's biggest breakout stars ahead of his first full season at the helm with the Atlanta Falcons. However, a 50-person panel of general managers, executives, and coaches around the league believes that the rocket-armed lefty has a lot to prove. In a poll conducted by The Athletic, the panel ranked all 34 veteran quarterbacks who are expected to contribute to their teams in some capacity during the 2025 season, and placed Penix at No. 28. Of the six quarterbacks selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft, Penix came in fifth behind Jayden Daniels (No. 6), Bo Nix (tied for No. 20), Drake Maye (No. 22), and Caleb Williams (No. 23). He was only ahead of Minnesota Vikings signal caller JJ McCarthy (No. 29) who missed all of his rookie season with a torn meniscus in his knee. The ranking isn't surprising for Penix, who made just three starts during his rookie season. Although the Falcons went 1-2 in those games, the runner-up to Daniels for the 2023 Heisman Trophy proved that he offers immense upside to Atlanta's offense as he threw for 737 yards and 3 touchdowns and a rushing score as the Falcons scored 96 points over the final three weeks of the regular season. Heading into the 2025 season, Penix is determined to lead Atlanta to one of the NFL's best passing offenses and bring the Falcons back to the playoffs for the first time since 2017. "We should be the best in the league," Penix told reporter Will McFadden in late July. "With the guys we have around us, we've got a great offensive line as well. Those guys work extremely hard in the trenches with [offensive line coach Dwayne] Ledford out there leading those guys, doing a great job. With those guys, we should be unstoppable. That's our goal. We want to be No. 1 in all the categories on the offensive side of the ball."
