Danny Wilson relishing chance to help Wales end losing run
Wilson has joined the Wales coaching staff for the upcoming two-Test tour of Japan, with Cardiff boss Sherratt resuming interim head coach duty.
Sherratt, who filled in for the final three Six Nations games after Warren Gatland left in February, worked as Wilson's assistant at the Cardiff Blues in 2016-17 but those roles have now been reversed.
'I left Wales and my role at Cardiff in 2018 and I have some really happy memories,' said Wilson, who was Dragons forwards coach between 2010 and 2012 and also had a spell in charge of the national Under-20s side.
'I first worked with Matt at Bristol and then having seen how good he was, I was desperate to bring him to Cardiff.
'We had a pretty good time together and then went our separate ways into different projects after a pleasing end by winning a bit of silverware with Cardiff (2018 European Challenge Cup).
'We work well together and dovetail a fair amount, but we are responsible for different areas.
'I'm very respectful of who is in the head coaching role. He was very supportive of me in our period together at Cardiff, and likewise me now.'
Wilson left Wales to forge his career in Scotland, working as forwards coach for the national team between 2018 and 2020.
He then spent two years at Glasgow Warriors before moving on to Harlequins in 2023, a role he will resume 'when I get off a flight from Japan'.
Wilson knows plenty about the challenges facing Wales in Japan after being part of the Scotland set-up at the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
Scotland were eliminated at the group stage after suffering a shock 28-21 defeat to Japan in Yokohama.
'There are big challenges around the humidity and cultural differences,' said Wilson.
'We did a huge amount of work on the humidity side of things and that is already being done.
'Greasy balls is an obvious challenge. I remember going out there and in the first few training sessions there were a lot of balls on the floor.
'There is a very passionate and hungry group of players here. In the short time I've got to know them I've found them to be a very responsive group to coaching.'
Wales suffered a 17th straight Test defeat – a record for a Tier One nation – when hammered 68-14 at home by England in March.
They play Eddie Jones' Japan in Kitakyushu on July 5, with the second Test in Kobe a week later.

‘I felt it was unjust' – Wrexham legend Paul Mullin accepts his fate and ‘doesn't know' why manager no longer trusts him
PAUL MULLIN has accepted his fate at Wrexham despite not knowing why Phil Parkinson has lost trust in him. The striker became a hero at the club following his arrival from Cambridge United in 2021. 3 Mullin, 30, provided many of the goals that helped catapult the club from the National League to League One in back-to-back promotions. However, last season he struggled for gametime as the Welsh outfit made it a historic three promotions in a row. Manager Parkinson favoured the likes of Steven Fletcher, Sam Smith, Jay Rodriguez and Ollie Palmer over Mullin last term. This saw the striker's gametime severely limited as he only made 26 appearances, scoring three goals. Mullin has now admitted that his journey with the club could be over. The striker made the revelation during a recent episode of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary. Mullin suggested that he would want to play just once in England's second division to complete his time at the club, but does think he no longer has a role. He said: "Just to play one game in the Championship with Wrexham would be worth absolutely everything. "I've enjoyed every minute here, and if we could get to the Championship, then that'd be phenomenal. Mullin has also been left feeling resentful of Parkinson as he feels his absence from the squad has been "unjust". The run out of the team came after his return from a back injury and surgery from last summer. He added: "I let that get to me, to be honest, from where I've been to then only being allowed to play four games and finding myself being left out of the team. "I resented it and I carried that for weeks because I felt it was unjust. "I think I'm more annoyed now. It's the annoyance of training every single day, doing everything I can, and looking back on everything I've done. "I feel like I was a main part of why we got into this situation, and then I'm not being allowed the platform to get back there, or the opportunity to go and do it again. "It's difficult. I don't know what's caused him [Parkinson] to trust me less, but he clearly does." Mullin has scored 105 goals for Wrexham in just 165 appearances since his arrival. He will be further down the pecking order at the club following the recent arrival of Ryan Hardie. The forward was signed from recently relegated Plymouth Argyle on a three-year deal. The former Pilgrim netted 74 times in 248 appearances in Devon and is believed to have been signed after his £700,000 release clause was activated. 3

Fin Baxter ready for bigger role with England this summer
The Harlequins prop burst onto the scene with Harlequins last season, a standout performance in place of the absent Joe Marler in a win away to Bordeaux-Bègles serving as a warning shot of just how good he could be. That led to a first England call-up for last summer's tour of New Zealand, and he has been a firm fixture in Steve Borthwick's plans ever since. With first choice loosehead Ellis Genge away with the Lions in Australia this summer, Baxter now has the chance to take on an even bigger role for England. And while the modern game might be asking more of props with ball in hand, Baxter believes that is the nuts and bolts that will determine how far he goes in the game. He said: 'I want to keep showing that I'm a key part (of the England team). I've got a real point of difference, my set-piece is hopefully that difference, and the stuff I bring around the park in my carrying and tackling, is going to hopefully overshadow that aggressive stereotype that Argentina brings. That label has been thrown around so much whereas for me, you have to scrum, you have to maul, you have to be very good at that first, to then be able to do the rest of it. "At the end of the day, you are picked on your scrummaging and the rest of it makes you a brilliant player. That is something I wanted not to miss. 'Coming through at Harlequins, I would think 'what's stopping me? What's not getting me picked?' and it was scrummaging. It's an easy answer. If you've got that ticked, you can bring the rest of your skills.' Baxter's emergence with England coincided with a string of narrow defeats, finding himself on the losing side in his first five caps. None of that was Baxter's responsibility, but he made a match-winning cameo against eventual Six Nations champions France in February at the Allianz Stadium, scoring a try in a dramatic 26-25 victory. He describes that game as 'mega' and has relished the upturn in results since as England finished their campaign with four straight victories on their way to second – their best result in the tournament for five years. He added: 'With England, it was a tough start results-wise. Come the Six Nations, to get the results like that and perform was brilliant. We beat Japan but before that, I'd not won a game for England, so to go from that to finishing off with four games not losing, it was nice to be on both sides of that. 'Being new into a team, you are not quite sure what is off, what's changed, what is different, because it's your first experience. "I did say to myself 'don't let this taint the start of my career', I had good times in those games, it's not just the result, I was enjoying myself, camp was fun, and the boys were playing well. It was nice to get the balance.' The challenge now is to kick on against the Pumas, renowned for their powerful pack, particularly on home soil. But for a player who has seized every opportunity that has come this way, Baxter is desperate to do it again and show that old-school skills still have their place in the modern game.
