Latvia: Kanimozhi-led all-party delegation pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi bust at National Library in Riga
Riga [Latvia], May 30 (ANI): The all-party delegation led by DMK MP Kanimozhi paid tribute to the Mahatma Gandhi bust installed in the National Library in Riga on Friday.
DMK MP Kanimozhi garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. The other members of the delegation also paid their respects.
Earlier in the day, the Kanimozhi-led delegation met with Andzejs Vilumsons, the State Secretary of Latvia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Andrejs Pildegovics, the Ambassador of Special Tasks of the Secretariat of the Candidate of Latvia to the UN Security Council and Permanent Representative of Latvia to the UN on Friday.
The delegation led by Kanimozhi also held a joint meeting in Latvia's Riga with the chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Friendship group of Parliamentarians for India.
The meeting was held at the Latvian Saeima, which is a unicameral parliament of Latvia.The delegation members also interacted with think tank members and senior officers from the foreign and other ministries.
The Kanimozhi-led delegation arrived in Latvia's capital, Riga, on Friday. India's ambassador to Latvia, Namrata Kumar, welcomed them.
Following the arrival of the all-party delegation in Latvia, the Indian Ambassador to Latvia, Namrata Kumar, stressed the importance of the Indian delegation's visit to Latvia.
She said that the delegation will stress India's position on terrorism and its zero tolerance for the issue and mentioned that during the first high-level visit following the opening of the resident mission in Latvia, the delegation will also speak about mobilising a global alliance for the fight against terrorism.
'The delegation is here especially for a very specific objective to stress our position on terrorism, zero tolerance for terrorism and our continuous fight against terrorism. India and Latvia share very strong and friendly relations. This is also testified by the fact that last year we opened our resident Mission here, which shows that the bilateral relations between the two countries are growing. This is the first high-level visit after the opening of the resident mission in Latvia... Our delegation will speak about mobilising the global alliance for the fight against terrorism,' she told ANI.
Namrata Kumar further informed that the all-party delegation will meet the Latvian parliamentarians. The delegation is also scheduled to meet with the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Latvian Parliament, which is called 'Saeima.'
'They are going to be meeting the parliamentarians - amongst the parliamentarians, they are specifically going to carry out meetings with the chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee of their Parliament, which is called Saeima... When it comes to the Baltic Assembly, where the parliamentarians of the three Baltic countries - Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia are represented. It means when our delegation, coming from India, is going to speak to the members of the Latvian parliamentarians, they are also going to promote the idea and the whole objective that they are coming with to the other two countries,' Kumar further said.
On Thursday, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, leading an all-party delegation to Greece, said India has made it clear that it will no longer distinguish between individual acts of terror and state-sponsored terrorism.
The delegation, led by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, includes Rajeev Rai (Samajwadi Party), Mian Altaf Ahmad (Jammu and Kashmir National Conference), Brijesh Chowta (BJP), Prem Chand Gupta (Rashtriya Janata Dal), Ashok Kumar Mittal (Aam Aadmi Party), and Former envoys Manjeev S Puri and Jawed Ashraf. Deendayal's ‘integral humanism' behind Modi govt's welfare measures: Nadda
The Narendra Modi government has empowered women, farmers and marginalised sections of society by taking various measures for them, while others only talked about doing so, BJP president and Union Minister J P Nadda said on Sunday. From putting the country on the path of economic progress to lifting 25 crore people above the poverty line, the government under PM Narendra Modi's leadership has launched varioius welfare schemes for all sections, drawing inspiration from Jana Sangh ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya's idea of 'integral humanism', Nadda said. The BJP chief was addressing the valedictory session of a two-day conclave to commemorate 60 years of Upadhyaya's lectures on integral humanism. 'Our traditions were not created in two days; they are a result of experiences of thousands of years,' he said, stressing the need to expound Indian economic thought. Nadda said that India as a country of 140 crore people cannot be centralised. 'We have to be a decentralised system,' he said. 'World standards cannot be the standards we have to adhere to; we have to have our Indian standards,' he said. He said this might not have seemed possible in Upadhyaya's time, but under PM Modi's leadership every parameter was being prepared around Indian standards. He said Upadhyaya at that time advocated 'swadeshi' and India could say today that self-reliance is the order of the times. 'We were even purchasing idols of Ganesh ji from China. Today, we are third in the toy industry,' Nadda said. 'We are also third in the automobile market.' He said that India had made strides in defence production too. 'We witnessed the success of Operation Sindoor and that of the BrahMos (missiles) as well. Our defence production has reached `1.3 crore,' he said. Under PM Modi, India had established an economic model aligning 'integral humanism; with 'Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas', he said. Recalling Upadhyaya's message that the economy was not assessed from the person on the top of the ladder but the one at its bottom, Nadda said, 'We have taken inspiration from his Antyodaya concept (uplifting the poorest).' Nadda underlined that Upadhyaya was the inspiration for the free gas cylinder scheme — PM Ujjwala Yojana — for women. He said Swachh Bharat Mission and welfare schemes for farmers launched by the PM were also inspired by Upadhyaya. He said the government has provided cooking gas connections to more than 10 crore households, constructed 12 crore toilets and built four crore pukka houses. There is a need to understand how the government under Modi's leadership has empowered women, farmers and the marginalised sections of society, and brought them into the mainstream, he said. Lt General Dinesh Rana assumes charge as 18th Commander-in-Chief of Andaman and Nicobar Command
New Delhi [India], June 1 (ANI): Lieutenant General Dinesh Rana on Sunday assumed charge as the 18th Commander-in-Chief of Andaman and Nicobar Command. Rana relinquished the appointment of Director General Defence Intelligence Agency and Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Intelligence on May 31. In a post on social media X, Headquarters of the Integrated Defence Staff wrote, 'Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, #CISC & All Ranks of HQ IDS congratulate and wish him best of luck in future endeavours.' Rana was commissioned into the 10th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles on December 19, 1987 and commanded the same battalion. In a career spanning over 37 years, the General Officer has held diverse operational, instructional, and staff appointments across various terrains and theatres. His service includes tenures with the Indian Military Training Team and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. He has commanded an Infantry Brigade and Division in the Eastern Sector and subsequently led the Gajraj Corps along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Rana has also served as an instructor at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. His staff appointments include Brigade Major of an Independent Armoured Brigade, Deputy Director General Staff Duties, Brigadier Military Intelligence (East), Provost Marshal, and Director General Staff Duties at Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Army). Prior to taking over as CINCAN, the General Officer served as Director General, Defence Intelligence Agency, making history as the first Chief of Defence Intelligence to be elevated to the rank of Commander-in-Chief -- a reflection of the growing importance of defence intelligence and jointmanship in India's military leadership. For his distinguished service, Lt Gen Rana has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Yudh Seva Medal (YSM), Sena Medal (SM), and the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card. As a young officer, he earned the Sena Medal and COAS Commendation for gallantry in Kashmir. He also holds a Ph.D. in China's defence modernisation. (ANI)

"Enthusiasm in Europe to enter into Free Trade Agreement with India": Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal
Paris [France], June 1 (ANI): Highlighting growing global confidence in India's economic prospects, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Sunday said there is strong enthusiasm in Europe to enter into a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India. Speaking to ANI during his ongoing visit to Paris, France, Goyal noted that India's rising reputation has made nations increasingly eager to deepen trade and diplomatic ties. He also noted the positive momentum following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in New Delhi earlier this year. 'There is no time limit for these discussions, but the European Union President, Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Modi had a meeting in New Delhi in February. It was decided that we should conclude a good Free Trade Agreement by the end of this year. Considering the relations that I have built with my counterpart, the European Union Trade Commissioner, Maros Sefcovic, I feel that we will progress very fast and take it forward soon. There is enthusiasm in Europe to enter into a Free Trade Agreement with India, and from the feedback we get from the industry in India, it seems India will also benefit from this,' Goyal said, adding that when both will benefit, it is natural that it is our responsibility to do it quickly. Earlier, while speaking to the media in Paris, Goyal also expressed gratitude towards France for its support following the terror attack in Pahalgam. 'India is very grateful to France for the strong support and solidarity expressed when there was a terror strike at Pahalgam. The French people and government also stand for zero tolerance against terrorism, just like India,' he said. He emphasised the strong personal rapport between PM Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, which he said had given 'fresh momentum' to the robust Indo-French relationship. 'The French Senate delegation that visited India fully supported India's stand and gave us confidence that the world stands with India when we are fighting against terrorism in all forms, whether state-sponsored or non-state actors. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Macron share a very deep personal connect and rapport and have had frequent interactions, giving afresh momentum to the strong French-India ties...' he said. The commerce minister commenced his three-day official visit to France on Sunday, part of his ongoing visit to France and Italy from June 1 to 5. As part of his visit, Goyal will hold bilateral meetings with several French leaders, including Minister of Economy Eric Lombard and Trade Minister Laurent Saint-Martin. The discussions will focus on strengthening the Indo-French economic partnership and exploring new avenues for enhancing trade and investment cooperation. As part of the high-level visit to France, a comprehensive agenda of strategic business meetings and engagements has been scheduled. With top leadership of major French companies such as Vicat, Total Energies, L'Oreal, Renault, Valeo, EDF, and ATR, the visit will feature the India-France Business Round Table and the India-France CEO Forum, fostering dialogue between leading industry stakeholders from both countries. During his stay, the Minister will also participate in the informal gathering of WTO Ministers on the margins of the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting. At this crucial forum, he will engage with global counterparts on key multilateral trade issues and articulate India's perspectives and priorities.
