McKenzie on Kunene's visit to DJ Sumbody murder accused: ‘He was set up'

News2423-07-2025
The PA's deputy president and Johannesburg MMC for transport, has been suspended for one month.
Businessman Katiso Molefe was arrested in connection with DJ Sumbody's November 2022 murder but Kunene claims he was only at his house during the police raid to facilitate an interview.
PA leader McKenzie has ordered an internal investigation by lawyers to protect the party's integrity.
Kenny Kunene was set up and had nothing to do with the murder case of Oupa John Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody in 2022.
This is according to Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie, who added that Kunene 'would never get involved with murderers'.
However, McKenzie said he was left with no choice but to suspend his deputy for a month. Kunene was found at the Sandton home of businessman Katiso 'Kat' Molefe during a police raid on Monday. Molefe was arrested in connection with Sefoka's murder.
Kunene told eNCA on Tuesday that he was at Molefe's house to facilitate an interview with a young journalist.
McKenzie said Kunene's presence at the time of the raid was an unfortunate incident which led to him making the 'difficult decision' to suspend the 'sushi king'.
Taking to social media platform Facebook on Tuesday, McKenzie announced in a video that an internal investigation would be launched and Kunene would be required to step down temporarily from his position as deputy president of the PA, to allow for the investigation to proceed without interference.
'Kenny Kunene will be investigated and I'm going to tell you who will investigate him – lawyers of good character,' he said.
While he is being investigated, I will remove him as an MMC [in the Johannesburg metro]. I'm also going to tell him to stay away from politics for a month until the investigation is completed. That is the most difficult thing I have ever had to do in my life.
Gayton McKenzie
Kunene denied any wrongdoing, insisting that he had no relationship with Molefe and that he was only at Molefe's house accompanying a journalist who was going to interview him.
I was there to take the journalist to interview him. Since I took office, I have not been able to focus on my Africa News Global [website], which has not been active as I have not been able to focus on it since I took office.
Kenny Kunene
'There was an opportunity to interview Mr Molefe, he is interesting because he has been accused of having masterminded a murder. There are interesting things surrounding him and it would have been a great exclusive for the young journalist to interview him.
I've never been to his house before and I don't even have his contact details.

Meanwhile, the DA in Johannesburg has called on Johannesburg executive mayor Dada Morero to take urgent action against Kunene and remove him permanently from his position as transport MMC.
'A political party has no power to suspend an MMC in government. The mayor appoints or removes MMCs. The PA must not play with the intelligence of the residents. Is Kenny removed as a councillor or not? The Speaker hasn't indicated any letter from his party to remove him,' DA Johannesburg caucus leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku posted on X.
She told Newzroom Afrika:
What is concerning to me is that during the day, the MMC of transport has the time to visit a murder suspect, to take a journalist to a murder suspect's house. It is very concerning that one of the members of the executive, who has no time to explain to residents why potholes are not fixed, has the time to visit a murder suspect. That is why we are concerned.
Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku
Despite Kunene's explanation, McKenzie stressed the importance of transparency and accountability, especially given the seriousness of Sefako's murder case.
McKenzie said he would be writing to the Johannesburg council to formally inform the metro of his decision to remove Kunene from the transport portfolio. He also reiterated that the suspension did not imply guilt but was a necessary step to protect the PA's integrity and ensure that the investigation proceeded without any perceived bias or interference.
The popular DJ was gunned down in a drive-by shooting in November 2022. The case had remained a high-profile investigation with few public developments, until Molefe's recent arrest.

Man sentenced to 12 years, 9 months for 2013 Minneapolis gas station shooting

A man who pleaded guilty to shooting a man at a Minneapolis gas station in 2013 was sentenced Thursday to 12 years and nine months. Suleiman Ali, 31, pleaded guilty in July to one count of second-degree murder for the Oct. 30, 2013 shooting. The victim was found at the intersection of Washington Avenue South and 12th Avenue South in the driver's seat of a car with multiple gunshot wounds to the head. Documents say that the victim had been on the phone with a woman, who later told officers she had driven to the gas station with her friend and another man to buy weed for the victim. Surveillance video showed Ali getting out of the woman's car and entering the gas station. He was wearing a letterman-style jacket, pieces of which were later found at the scene. During the initial investigation, police learned that Ali had fled the country, likely to Somalia. The case went cold until mid-2022 when another woman told police that Ali had called her after the shooting and asked for money to help him leave the country. Ali had admitted to shooting the victim, charging documents said. In 2024, investigators learned Ali was back in the country and living in Fargo, North Dakota. He was taken into custody on May 1, 2024. He was sentenced to 153 months with 465 days credit for time already served.

Bag of animal organs found in Morris County town, police say as investigation continues

A suspicious garbage bag found at a car wash in East Hanover contained animal organs, not human remains, authorities said July 30. Police were called to The Finish Line Car Wash at 84 Route 10 around 9:33 a.m. July 29 after employees discovered the bag inside a trash can, according to a statement from East Hanover Police Chief Christopher F. Cannizzo. The Morris County Medical Examiner's Office examined the contents and confirmed the bag contained animal remains. No human tissue was found, Cannizzo said. The investigation into how the remains ended up at the car wash is ongoing. Authorities have not said what kind of animal the organs belonged to. Who is Lucas Paqueta? The Premier League player who won his case against betting charges

Editor's note: A version of this article first appeared on The Athletic in May 2024 It is not hard to imagine a parallel universe in which Lucas Paqueta spent this summer playing in the Club World Cup for Manchester City. In summer 2023, he was on the cusp of a transfer move to City after a breakout 2022-23 season for West Ham United. That fell apart when an FA investigation into alleged breaches of betting regulations came to the fore. Advertisement Instead of competing in the U.S., he has spent the majority of the summer — and the last two seasons — with the threat of a significant ban from playing football hanging over his head. The Athletic reported earlier this year that a verdict was meant to drop during this time. Paqueta was charged last year, accused of 'intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market in order for one or more persons to profit from betting'. The charges related to four Premier League matches: one in 2022 and three in 2023. He always denied the charges. Now the verdict has been given. An independent regulatory commission have found the misconduct charges around the betting breaches not proven. They did, however, find the charges for breaches of FA Rule F3 — failing to comply with obligations to answer questions and provide information to the FA's investigation — to be proven. Even so, Paqueta is now free to continue his career. The midfielder, born Lucas Tolentino Coelho de Lima, grew up on — and gained his nickname from — Paqueta, a small island in Rio de Janeiro's Guanabara Bay. He played academy football for Flamengo, Brazil's biggest club, graduating to the first team in 2016. There were, initially, a few doubts over Paqueta's physique. He was a late developer and did not always seem to have the strength to thrive in central midfield. But his technical quality shone through, as did his knack for making his mark in big games: Paqueta scored in the 2017 Copa do Brasil and Copa Sudamericana finals, becoming a fan favourite in the process. Like most talented young Brazilians, Paqueta made his way to Europe. His destination was Milan in Italy in 2019, who hoped he might replicate the success of Kaka, a fellow Brazilian. But despite showing the odd flash of inspiration, Paqueta was unable to nail down a starting berth and was sold to Lyon for a loss only one year after his arrival. Advertisement It proved to be the fresh start he needed. 'I put myself under a lot of pressure in Milan,' Paqueta told the French newspaper L'Equipe. 'Too much even. When I moved to France, I told myself I didn't have to put myself through that again. I just had to do my best.' In Ligue 1, his best was more than good enough. Paqueta became the league's great entertainer — his repertoire of nutmegs, through balls and insouciant celebrations enchanting supporters in the Rhone Valley and beyond. Paqueta had made his Brazil debut as a Flamengo player in 2018, but it was his form for Lyon that helped him to become a regular at international level. He appeared 26 times for the Selecao in 2021 and 2022, playing in a variety of positions and going to the World Cup as an undisputed starter. His telepathic understanding with the team's star player, Neymar, made him particularly indispensable; it was no coincidence that the best goal scored in Qatar — Neymar's strike in the quarter-final against Croatia — was the result of a combination between the two players. By that point, Paqueta was already starting to establish himself as a Premier League star. Some had questioned whether West Ham — or English football in general — would be a good fit for his mercurial skill set when he joined the club in August 2022, but they soon fell silent. Paqueta settled well and proved that he could put in the hard yards as well as perform conjuring acts with his left boot. He finished that first season with five goals and seven assists in all competitions. Those numbers rose to eight and seven respectively in 2023-24. The investigation did not seem to affect his performance. It did, however, temporarily cost him his Brazil place: interim coach Fernando Diniz was unwilling to pick him due to the uncertainty. 'I consider Paqueta to be one of the best players of this generation,' Diniz said. 'I really admire him. But there's an investigation ongoing, with no new details. I have to be coherent and ethical.' Paqueta returned to the Brazil setup earlier this year when Diniz was replaced by Dorival Junior, his former coach at Flamengo. Advertisement He continued to feature for the national team throughout last season, making five appearances — although none once 2024 ended and 2025 began. Paqueta's form went up and down last season, but he still played frequently for West Ham, making 33 appearances in the Premier League and scoring four goals. On Thursday, he had the news he had been waiting for all summer. He said: 'Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations. I can't say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face. 'To my wife who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on, and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me — thank you for everything.' The 27-year-old will now try to continue the career that seemed so bright before those charges initially dropped. That will only be to West Ham's benefit.
