Scottie Scheffler has competed in 25 majors and has now won four of them and he's now just one U.S. Open win from completing the vaunted career Grand Slam. Scheffler has received - and deserves - endless praise for his accomplishments on the golf greens. But for Tiger Woods' former coach, there's an even higher level of praise he's earned. Appearing on SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio, Woods' former coach Butch Harmon had some of the highest possible praise for Scheffler. Amid a discussion comparing Scheffler to his iconic pupil, Harmon declared that Scheffler is the closest thing he's seen to the golf GOAT himself, Jack Nicklaus. "I got to tell you that the only reason I called in, I was listening to you talk about him and all the comparisons and stuff to Tiger and this and that," Harmon said. "I think his greatest attribute that he has is he's the closest thing to Jack Nicklaus I've ever seen mentally. He makes no mental mistakes. He dumps the ball in the middle of the green when he has to. His iron control is beautiful. "He reminds me more of Jack than he does of Tiger, Tiger in the winning ways, but Jack in the way he plays golf. I've never quite seen a guy that can mimic Nicklaus the way he does." To call that high praise is a bit of an understatement. Nicklaus still holds nearly every record there is for golf's biggest events, particularly with his record for major wins. Whether or not Scheffler can continue his winning ways and someday challenge Woods, let alone Nicklaus, for the all-time major crown is a very different conversation though. Age alone might factor into the occasion. Case in point, Woods had already won eight majors by the time he reached Scheffler's age. He managed to win another six between 2005 and 2008, coming agonizingly close to winning another five between 2005 and 2009. Then the injuries started to pick up. For now, Scheffler is about 25-percent of the way towards challenging the marks set by Woods and Nicklaus. Bryson DeChambeau's stunning 54-hole finish leaves him with major British Open regret
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland — Bryson DeChambeau looked like he'd played his way out of the British Open on Thursday, when he posted an opening-round 7-over 78. From there, though, he went on a tear, shooting 65 in the second round to make the cut on the number. That was followed by a third-round 68 and a final-round 64 on Sunday. It all added up to a stunning tie for 10th for DeChambeau. His total of 197 over the final 54 holes was the second-lowest ever in an Open. Only Henrik Stenson, en route to winning in 2016, bettered that with 196. 'It was a fun three days,' DeChambeau said. 'I was really proud of the way I turned it around and gave myself actually some hope. It was a very emotional week. I came in feeling like my game was right there, and all of sudden it was not there. 'I was able to hold myself together under the pressure and fight for every shot. I'm super proud of the round I played today. Just wish I could have that 78 back.' Harris English finished runner-up to Scottie Scheffler at 13-under, which was four shots out of the lead. It's the second time he's played bridesmaid to Scheffler in a major this year. English was tied for second at the PGA Championship, which Scheffler won in May. 'Losing to Scottie twice in two majors, the only guy to beat me at the PGA and this week,'' English said. 'I'm playing some good golf. Just need to clean it up a little bit. One of my two goals this year were to make it to the Tour Championship and make that Ryder Cup team, and hopefully I've moved myself a little bit closer to that, and hopefully I can get in that top six to lock up a spot.'' Rory McIlroy, of course, is bullish on Portrush because he's from Northern Ireland, but he raved about the venue. 'Honestly, I think Portrush has quickly turned into one of the best two or three venues that The Open goes to,' McIlroy said. 'Talk to every player this week, and they won't say one single bad thing about the golf course. Then I just think the way it sets up, from a logistical standpoint, I think the R&A have worked so well with the local government to make sure everything runs smoothly. 'It's only been six years since 2019. I'm not sure Portrush is going to have The Open every six years — that would be nice — but I would obviously love it to keep coming back.'

The Toronto Blue Jays are giving Proline players plenty to ponder these days. Toronto returned from the all-star break in impressive fashion, sweeping the San Francisco Giants over the weekend. The Jays opened the series with a 4-0 victory Friday night before finishing up with wins by scores of 6-3 and 8-6. According to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp., 69 per cent of players backed Toronto's win Saturday, with 53 per cent having the Blue Jays at +1.5 runs. Seventy-nine per cent had them over at 7.5. Sunday's series-ending victory was supported by 63 per cent of bettors while 51 per cent had Toronto +1.5 runs. But only 48 successfully had the Jays over at 8.5. Heading into the second half of the baseball season, the Los Angeles Dodgers are the top World Series outright pick at 32 per cent, followed by Toronto at 21 per cent. The Detroit Tigers are a distant third at 11per cent. Toronto is a solid 62 per cent pick to win the American League East outright, comfortably ahead of the New York Yankees (21 per cent). Meanwhile, in golf, American Scottie Scheffler cemented his status as the world's top-ranked player by winning the British Open by four strokes.
