New Delhi: Consumers of premium cars and SUVs are likely to benefit from the India-UK FTA with New Delhi set to cut import duties on a specified volume of vehicles. As per a statement issued by the UK government, high-end cars made in the country "will benefit from a drop (in import duties) from over 100% to 10% under a quota".It is not immediately clear if the reduced levies will apply on certain categories of vehicles or those in a determined price range. Details are also awaited on the quantum of vehicles that the Indian government will allow for imports under concessional tariffs.Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover has manufacturing plants in the UK. Tata Motors did not comment on the FTA.Auto parts makers in India, industry experts said, should be able to enhance exports to the UK as they will be granted duty-free exemption."This deal should really help our auto component makers sell more in the UK. At the same time, Indian consumers might be able to buy premium cars at the right price point as soon as they are launched globally," said Saurabh Agarwal, partner & automotive tax leader, EY India. "It probably won't shake up our Indian car manufacturers too much because most Indian consumers still prefer the more affordable options."Industry body Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) said while it is yet to examine details of the agreement, it expects expanded opportunities, stronger collaborations, and improved market access.Shradha Suri Marwah, president, ACMA said, "The Indian auto component industry looks forward to enhanced co-operation, technology partnerships and market access through this milestone agreement."

Rupee recovers after breaching 86-mark as dollar, oil prices ease
The Indian currency eased off after breaching the 86 mark on Thursday amid a dip in the dollar index and crude oil prices. The domestic currency opened 7 paise higher at 86.01 against the dollar on Friday, according to Bloomberg. The rupee has witnessed 0.44 per cent depreciation in the current calendar year and a 0.23 per cent fall this week. On Thursday, the dollar buying was largely driven by outflows related to an initial public offering (IPO) that was subscribed 63 times, with allotment completed the same day, Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said. "Exporters, having sold near 86.00–86.05, may wait for further depreciation today or on Monday. Importers are advised to hold for now, though a breach of the 86.10 level could trigger further dollar buying," Bhansali said. The dollar fell after Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said policymakers should cut interest rates this month to support a labour market that is showing signs of weakness, Bloomberg reported. Furthermore, US retail sales rebounded in June above estimates while the US unemployment benefits declined for a fifth straight week to the lowest since mid-April. The dollar index, a measure of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was down 0.3 per cent at 98.45. However, markets remained largely steady on the Fed outlook, with no significant change in expectations for a September rate cut or the total number of rate cuts anticipated in 2025, reports said. In commodities, crude oil prices dropped in Asian trade after sharp gains, fuelled by drone attacks on Iraqi oil fields. Brent crude price was down 0.14 per cent at 69.42 per barrel, while WTI crude prices were lower by 0.16 per cent at 67.43, as of 9:18 AM IST.

Stock Market Updates: GIFT Nifty Hints A Muted Start For Sensex, Nifty; RIL, Axis, Wipro Q1 In Focus
Last Updated: Sensex Today: The benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, are expected to open on a cautious yet slightly positive note on Sensex Today: The benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, are expected to open on a cautious yet slightly positive note on Friday, as investors monitor a range of domestic and global factors. The market sentiment will likely be shaped by corporate Q1 earnings, institutional flows, forex reserve updates, developments on the India-US trade front, Japan's inflation data, and key economic releases from the US. At 8:50 AM, GIFT Nifty futures were trading 16 points higher at 25,190, hinting at a flat-to-positive start for the Indian bourses. Global cues remain broadly supportive. On Wall Street, all major indices ended higher after upbeat economic data and robust earnings lifted investor confidence. US retail sales rose by 0.6% month-on-month in June 2025, exceeding expectations of just 0.1% and breaking a two-month decline. Weekly jobless claims also dropped by 7,000 to 221,000—marking the lowest level since April—contrary to forecasts of a rise to 235,000. This optimism was reflected in US equity markets, where the S&P 500 climbed 0.54% to 6,297.36, the Dow Jones rose 0.52% to 44,484.49, and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.7% to 20,885.65. In Asia, markets offered mixed cues. The ASX 200 in Australia rose 0.69%, touching a new record high. However, Japan's Nikkei slipped 0.20% while the broader Topix index remained flat with a slightly negative bias. South Korea's Kospi also declined by 0.4%. Japan Inflation in Focus Japan's inflation data released today showed signs of easing, which could impact the Bank of Japan's monetary stance. Core inflation dropped to 3.3% in June from 3.7% in May, in line with market expectations. Headline inflation also cooled to 3.3%. Interestingly, the BOJ's preferred core-core inflation measure—which excludes volatile food and energy prices—rose slightly to 3.4% from 3.3%, signaling that underlying price pressures still persist. Overall, with mixed regional cues and a data-heavy day ahead, the markets may see a cautious start, with stock-specific action dominating due to Q1 results announcements. view comments First Published: July 18, 2025, 09:14 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
