Australia to recognize Palestinian state, leader says

The Hill5 hours ago
Australia will recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations in September, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Monday, joining a wave of Group of 20 nations that have moved to rebuke Israel over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
'A two-state is humanity's best hope to break the cycle of violence in the Middle East and to bring an end to the conflict, suffering, and starvation in Gaza,' Albanese said at a press conference. 'The international community's vision for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East always encompassed two states living side-by-side with internationally recognized borders.'
Australia joins Canada, Britain and France in moving to recognize a Palestinian state, a largely symbolic gesture, as international outrage builds over Israel's war in Gaza, now approaching its two-year mark.
Like the recognitions planned by other Western countries, Australia's comes with conditions: a commitment to demilitarization, democratic elections and assurances that Hamas will play no part in a Palestinian government.
Albanese said he spoke on Thursday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has largely resisted international pressure to shift the war from his own timeline.
'Most of the Jewish public is against the Palestinian state for the simple reason that they know it won't bring peace. It'll bring war. To have European countries and Australia march into that rabbit hole, just like that, fall right into it and buy this canard, it's disappointing,' Netanyahu said at a Sunday press conference, prior to Australia's announcement. 'I think it's actually shameful.'
The Israeli government late last week confirmed its military would seek to control Gaza City, one of the last slices of the besieged enclave not already under Israeli control. The Israeli prime minister has doubled down in response to international condemnation of the move, including Germany saying it would halt certain military exports to Israel.
New Zealand is also weighing recognizing Palestinian statehood, Foreign Minister Winston Peters said Monday.
The Palestinian Authority currently has observer status at the United Nations, allowing it to engage with the international community but without voting rights in the U.N.'s General Assembly. The Vatican holds similar status.
Admission of the Palestinian Authority as a member state with full voting rights would require the assent of the U.N. Security Council, where the United States holds veto power.

Ukrainian drone strike kills 1 in Russia ahead of the Trump-Putin summit

KYIV, Ukraine — A Ukrainian drone attack killed one person and wounded two others in a region some 260 miles east of Moscow, a Russian official said Monday, as fighting continued ahead of Friday's Russia-U.S. summit in which President Vladimir Putin seeks a peace deal to lock in Moscow's gains. Nizhny Novgorod region Gov. Gleb Nikitin said in a statement that drones targeted two 'industrial zones' and caused the casualties and unspecified damage. A Ukrainian official said at least four drones launched by the security services, or SBU, struck a plant in Arzamas city that produced components for Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss operations, said the Plandin plant produces gyroscopic devices, control systems and on-board computers for the missiles and is an 'absolutely legitimate target' because it is part of the Russian military-industrial complex that works for the war against Ukraine. Russia's Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed a total of 39 Ukrainian drones overnight and Monday morning over several Russian regions as well as over the Crimean peninsula that Russia annexed in 2014. Friday's summit, which President Trump will host in Alaska, sees Putin unwavering on his demands to keep all the Ukrainian territory his forces now occupy and to prevent Kyiv from joining NATO, with the long-term aim of keeping Ukraine under Moscow's sphere of influence. Putin believes he has the advantage on the ground as Ukrainian forces struggle to hold back Russian advances along the front. On the front lines, few Ukrainian soldiers believe there's an end in sight to the war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky insists he will never consent to any Russian annexation of Ukrainian territory nor give up his country's bid for NATO membership. European leaders have rallied behind Ukraine, saying peace can't be resolved without Kyiv. With Europeans and Ukrainians so far not invited to the summit, Germany sought to prepare by inviting Trump, Zelensky, the NATO chief and several other European leaders for a virtual meeting on Wednesday. The German chancellery said the talks would seek additional ways to pressure Russia and prepare for peace negotiations and 'related issues of territorial claims and security.' Steffen Meyer, spokesperson for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, said earlier Monday that the German government 'has always emphasized that borders must not be shifted by force' and that Ukraine should decide its own fate 'independently and autonomously..

Netanyahu's plans for expanded Gaza offensive spark anger and dismay at home and abroad

TEL AVIV — Outrage is growing over Benjamin Netanyahu's planned new Gaza Strip offensive, with news of the Israeli leader's broadening military campaign met with anger at home and condemnation abroad. An association of Israel air force reserve and retired pilots have issued a statement calling for an 'immediate end to the futile war and urgent action to bring the hostages home.' 'The war being waged in Gaza is exacting an unbearable toll from hostages who have languished in captivity for 676 days, is risking our soldiers' lives in vain, is causing unnecessary harm to innumerable innocent civilians, and is degrading Israel's standing in the world to an unprecedented low,' it added on Sunday. The statement — which was the first time the group had explicitly called for an end to the conflict — was issued as Palestinians continued dying from both Israeli fire and hunger. Families of hostages were, meanwhile, growing increasingly desperate. 'The decision to send the army deeper into Gaza is a danger to my husband, Omri,' Lishay Miran-Lavi, wife of hostage Omri Miran, told a news conference Sunday as Netanyahu defended a previously unannounced operation in the besieged and bombarded Palestinian enclave. Calling on Israel's largest companies, trade unions and the tech sector to strike, she said they should 'stop everything in order to save our hostages and our soldiers.' 'My husband and the other hostages are facing extreme danger,' Miran-Lavi added. Hamas, other militants and Palestinian civilians seized about 250 hostages during the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack. Of the 50 hostages who remain in Gaza, about 20 are believed to be alive. The families have called for the strike to take place Sunday, according to the Reuters news agency. The Israeli security Cabinet had approved the destruction of Hamas strongholds in the 'central camps' and Al-Mawasi, In addition to Gaza City, Netanyahu said Sunday. 'The timeline that we set for the action is fairly quickly,' he said. 'We want, first of all, to enable safe zones to be established so the civilian population of Gaza City can move out.' Israel's goal was not to stay in Gaza — just free it of Hamas, Netanyahu added. 'We have two remaining strongholds, OK? These are Gaza City and the central camps and Mawasi,' he said. According to the United Nations, the camps are housing more than a half-million Palestinians displaced during Israel's military campaign triggered by Hamas' Oct. 7 terrorist attack, in which 1,200 people were killed. The goals, he said, included demilitarizing the entire Palestinian territory, with the Israeli military having 'overriding security control' but a non-Israeli civilian administration taking charge. He also continued to deny there was starvation in Gaza, claiming the situation is being exaggerated. 'No one in Gaza would have survived after two years of war' if Israel was implementing a 'starvation policy,' Netanyahu said. More than 200 Palestinians have died from extreme malnutrition in Gaza, according to Palestinian health officials, even as Israel allows more aid to trickle into the territory. According to local health officials, more than 61,000 Palestinians, including thousands of children, have been killed since Israel began its military campaign Oct. 7, 2023, after Hamas' terrorist attack. World leaders also condemned Netanyahu's new plan at an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting. 'Expanding military operations will only endanger the lives of all civilians in Gaza, including the remaining hostages, and result in further unnecessary suffering,' Denmark, France, Greece, Slovenia and Britain said in a joint statement. 'This is a manmade crisis, and therefore urgent action is needed to halt starvation and to surge aid into Gaza.' Later Sunday, Al Jazeera said five of its staff members — Anas al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa — were killed 'in a targeted Israeli strike on a tent housing journalists in Gaza City.' The Israeli military said that al-Sharif was 'the head of a terrorist cell in the Hamas terrorist organization and was responsible for advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops.'
