The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup kicks off in less than a month, but before the first group stage matches begin, there's one spot left to be filled.
Today, May 31, LAFC (from USA's Major League Soccer) and Club América (from Mexico's Liga MX) will face off in a play-in match with the winner advancing into the final Club World Cup slot.
The play-in game is a new addition to the Club World Cup. Mexican team Club León was expelled from the tournament in March for being under the same ownership group as nother Club World Cup qualifier, Pachuca.
LAFC had lost to León in the 2023 Concacaf Champions Cup final, so, as that competition's runner-up, LAFC was given another opportunity to qualify. Club América qualified as the top-ranked Concacaf club not already in the tournament, per the FIFA Club World Cup confederation ratings.

Trent Alexander-Arnold to join Real Madrid early as Liverpool accept £10m deal

Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to complete an early move to Real Madrid after Liverpool accepted a £10million fee for the right-back. Alexander-Arnold was expected to move to the Spanish giants following the expiry of his Reds contract at the end of June, but Madrid have paid an eight-figure fee to expedite the transfer ahead of the Club World Cup. Advertisement Xabi Alonso, Madrid's new head coach, wanted the player in his squad for their first match of the newly expanded tournament against Al Hilal in Miami on June 18. Alexander-Arnold will officially become a Madrid player on the first summer transfer window opens on June 1. Real Madrid have confirmed that Alexander-Arnold has signed a six-year contract with the club, which will begin on June 1, and his debut will come in the Club World Cup. Alexander-Arnold's move brings to an end a 20-year association with Liverpool. The England international confirmed his impending exit earlier in May, issuing a statement which read: 'After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season. Advertisement 'This is easily the hardest decision I've ever made in my life. I know many of you have wondered why or been frustrated that I haven't spoken about this yet, but it was always my intention to keep my full focus on the team's best interests, which was securing No.20.' Alexander-Arnold joined Liverpool's academy at the age of six and has gone on to make more than 350 appearances for the club. He leaves the Reds with a complete set of trophies to his name, having won two Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2019, to go with an FA Cup, a League Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

Liverpool sign Jeremie Frimpong as Trent Alexander-Arnold replacement after £109m Florian Wirtz bid

Contract signed: Jeremie Frimpong has now completed his transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool (Liverpool FC via Getty Images) Liverpool have officially announced the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. The Dutch right-back has signed a five-year contract at Anfield until 2030 after his £29.5million release clause was triggered by the reigning Premier League champions. Advertisement Frimpong arrives on Merseyside as the long-term replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool's stalwart on the right side of defence who is leaving the club after a 21-year association in order to join Real Madrid, who have completed a £10m deal for the out-of-contract England international to join early ahead of the Club World Cup. 'It went quite easy,' Frimpong told Liverpool's official website. 'Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer. 'For me, it was like, 'Whatever you guys do, just get this done', [speaking to] my agents: 'Just get this done.' 'Liverpool fans, I'm going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together. Advertisement 'I'm just excited to be here. Thank you guys for accepting me and I won't let you guys down and I'll give you the energy that you guys want.' New threads: Frimpong's Liverpool squad number will be announced later in the summer (Liverpool FC via Getty Images) The versatile Frimpong can also play on the wing and excelled during four-and-a-half years at Leverkusen, scoring 30 goals and laying on 44 assists in 190 total appearances across all competitions as a key member of the side who came so close to securing a memorable trophy treble under Xabi Alonso last season, winning both the Bundesliga title and the German Cup before losing to Atalanta in the Europa League final. The 24-year-old initially graduated through Manchester City's youth academy but left in 2019 without making a senior appearance, spending two years at Celtic and winning a domestic treble in Scotland. Advertisement Frimpong was born in Amsterdam and represents the Netherlands at international level, earning 12 senior caps for the Oranje so far and going to both Euro 2024 and the 2022 World Cup. 'I spoke to the manager [Arne Slot] a few times,' added Frimpong, whose Liverpool squad number will be confirmed later in the summer. 'He sounds very positive. He says I can bring a lot of energy and my qualities, my speed. 'Especially when a manager is talking positively about you, it gives you very good confidence that he believes in you. I've had good conversations with him. 'I'm really excited [to work with Arne Slot]. Even when I was at [the] national team, some of the Feyenoord boys would tell me about him and be like, 'He's the best coach I've ever had.' Things like this. Next signing? Liverpool will hope to reunite Frimpong with his Bayer Leverkusen team-mate Florian Wirtz (Getty Images) 'So, I've always heard good things about the coach. Now he's going to be my coach, so I'm excited for that.' Advertisement Frimpong is technically the second planned arrival of what is already a hugely busy summer on the transfer front for Liverpool, who are also pushing to complete a separate deal with Leverkusen that would see them beat the likes of Bayern Munich and Manchester City to the signing of highly-rated German forward Florian Wirtz. Reports emerged on Friday that Liverpool have now tabled an improved second offer for Wirtz worth up to €130m (£109.4m), comprised of a fixed fee and potential add-ons. The Reds are also believed to be in talks with Bournemouth over a deal for Hungarian left-back Milos Kerkez as a successor to Andy Robertson, while this week they have also been strongly linked with Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, along with Chelsea. Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili will also move to Liverpool this summer as part of a £29m transfer agreed with Valencia last year. Losing both Frimpong and Wirtz in the same summer would be a huge blow for Leverkusen, who, after relinquishing their Bundesliga crown to Bayern this season, have already lost manager Alonso to Real Madrid following Carlo Ancelotti's move to Brazil, hiring former Manchester United and Ajax boss Erik ten Hag as his replacement.

Florian Wirtz to Liverpool twist as Milos Kerkez addresses transfer links amid Luis Diaz update

On the move? Liverpool want to sign both Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz, while Luis Diaz could leave Anfield this summer (Getty Images) Liverpool have reportedly scheduled fresh talks over Florian Wirtz this week, while Milos Kerkez has also addressed speculation over a switch to Anfield amid a possible new hint on Luis Diaz's future. The reigning Premier League champions are wasting no time this summer after the opening of a first mini 10-day transfer window on Sunday, already confirming the £29.5million arrival of Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong as the replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, whom Real Madrid are signing early for a £10m fee ahead of the Club World Cup. Advertisement Liverpool want Wirtz to join his former Bayer Leverkusen team-mate at Anfield, having been locked in talks over beating Bayern Munich to what would be a blockbuster signing and a real statement of intent ahead of next season's title defence. Two bids are believed to have been tabled for the 22-year-old so far, the second of which was said to have totalled up to £109million including bonuses. However, that offer was not accepted by Leverkusen as negotiations continued, with Sky Germany reporting on Sunday that the deposed Bundesliga champions - now managed by former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, appointed after Xabi Alonso's move to Real Madrid - wanted either Jarell Quansah or Harvey Elliott as part of the deal, while BILD said Leverkusen were looking for €150m (£126.4m) for their top attacking talent. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano then reported on Monday that Liverpool have scheduled a fresh round of talks over Wirtz - whose parents also held talks with Manchester City last month before they eventually dropped out of the race - this week, remaining confident and optimistic of securing an agreement soon. Advertisement Having quickly filled the void on the right side of their defence, Liverpool are also pursuing their long-term successor to left-back stalwart Andy Robertson, with discussions rumoured to be underway with Bournemouth over Milos Kerkez. Awaiting the green light: Florian Wirtz is currently with Germany ahead of the Nations League Finals (Getty Images) Addressing such interest in a new interview, the Hungarian international told MLSZ TV that he was in contact with compatriot and Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai 'every other day', adding: 'Of course, something always leaks into the news. I don't know how. 'At the same time, I think it's normal that if you play well and the team does well, then you get into the news and end up on the front page, and everyone talks about you. Advertisement 'I see this as fuel that drives me forward. All this doesn't break me, but it doesn't 'boost' my ego either, but it teaches me humility and motivates me.' One player who could leave Liverpool this summer is Luis Diaz. The Colombian forward was a key part of the team that clinched the title in Arne Slot's first season in charge, scoring 17 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions. However, he has been linked with both Barcelona and a lucrative switch to Saudi Arabia with Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr, where former Liverpool star Sadio Mane also currently plays. Some fans have now speculated if a heartfelt message from Diaz's partner posted on social media at the weekend could be interpreted as a potential farewell. Advertisement 'To the incredible Liverpool fans,' Gera Ponce wrote on Instagram on Sunday, along with a picture of Diaz and his family in front of The Kop on the final day of the season. 'From the first day we arrived, we felt first hand what it means to be a part of this club. 'We knew the slogan was 'You'll Never Walk Alone', but to hear them sing it with so much passion, support each other at every moment and show such unconditional love… confirmed to us that here you never walk alone. 'This fan doesn't just support, it feels. And what you have made my boyfriend and our entire family feel is something we carry in our souls. 'Thank you for so much love, for so much dedication and for making us feel at home. Being a part of this fan is a privilege. There's no doubt: they're the best in the world. 'This is a real bond, deep and strong, that reaffirms that we'll never walk alone.'
