Liberty star Breanna Stewart reveals when she'll ‘definitely be back' by after knee injury

Liberty star Breanna Stewart was all smiles Sunday and said she felt 'great' after she wrapped up an individual workout on the Liberty's practice court while her teammates warmed up for New York's game against the Lynx.
Stewart has been sidelined for the past two weeks with a bone bruise in her right knee. While she said her rehab process is going well, the team's training staff hasn't established a target return date.
Stewart echoed Liberty coach Sandy Brondello's hope that the two-time league MVP will be cleared to play by the end of this month.
Stewart went as far to say that she'll 'definitely be back' before her 31st birthday on Aug. 27.
'That's a non-negotiable,' she said. 'I have to be back before my birthday.'

In the meantime, though, Stewart will have no choice but to continue to practice patience while nature runs its course.
Stewart left the Liberty's July 26 loss to the Sparks after three minutes of action with an apparent leg injury.
Speaking with reporters for the first time since her injury Sunday, Stewart said she didn't know when she initially suffered a bone bruise.
'When I stepped, I just felt something in my knee a little bit,' Stewart said. 'But I don't know. I think I just irritated it. I'm sure the bone bruise was there already.'
July 26 was the second night of a back-to-back for the Liberty.
On the previous night, Stewart looked gassed and shot 3-for-12 from the field, though she said after the game that she wouldn't use fatigue as an excuse for her performance.

Right now, Stewart said she's able to do just about everything but play competitive five-on-five basketball. She's been shooting and moving around the court during her solo sessions.
'There's kind of no restrictions,' she said. 'It's just about keeping the load lower. So the time period of me working out is a little bit shorter.'
Her next two weeks will consist of her ramping up her cardio and lengthening her individual workouts.

'Progressing the on-court workouts to get into playing so then when I do come into the game, it's not as much of a change,' she said. 'Obviously, some things you can't recreate but as close to that as possible.'
Of course, Stewart would much rather be playing than sitting out, especially considering Kennedy Burke (right calf sprain) and Nyara Sabally (right knee) are also out.
Stewart has been practically begging the training staff to give her the green light to return for the past two weeks.
But as much as she wants to be back, Stewart also knows she'll be better able to contribute to this team when she's fully healthy.

Still, that didn't make watching the Liberty struggle through a four-game losing streak from the sidelines any easier. Seeing the obvious void Stewart's absence left was almost as painful as her nagging knee injury.
'It's the worst,' she said. 'Just knowing I want to be out there helping them and fighting and battling with them is the hardest part. But they got my back. And while we're gonna go through some struggles, we went through some, it's really about the bounce back and they want me to be back healthy, too. So they don't want me to rush into it either.'

The Flames were coming off a 13-1 campaign, they had Kaidon Salter returning after a monster year under center and head coach Jamey Chadwell was entering his second year. Liberty was a clear favorite to win Conference USA and there was a lot of buzz about the Flames representing the Group of 5 in the College Football Playoff. Not so fast. Liberty finished 8-4 overall, and just 5-3 in C-USA. It was a reminder to assume nothing in this sport, especially in the Group of 5. 2025 Conference USA odds Team Odds Liberty +120 Western Kentucky +350 Louisiana Tech +800 Jacksonville State +850 Sam Houston State 10/1 FIU 14/1 UTEP 14/1 Middle Tennessee 18/1 New Mexico State 25/1 Kennesaw State 33/1 Odds via bet365 (Delaware and Missouri State are ineligible to win the conference). The Favorite Despite their down year and the transfer of Salter to Colorado, Liberty is once again the runaway favorite in Conference USA, perhaps the weakest in the Group of 5. It may seem odd to install the Flames as such a short favorite, but the reality is that this program can outspend the rest of the teams in the conference by a wide margin. The Flames may be breaking in a new quarterback — Ethan Vasko, a transfer from Coastal Carolina, is the projected starter — but he will have plenty of experience in front of — and around — him. Getty Images It's also likely that Vasko and the offense won't be asked to be prolific because Liberty's defense projects to be one of the best in the Group of 5. With a terrific coach, plenty of money and a lot of talent and experience throughout the roster, Liberty remains a step above the rest of C-USA. We could have said the same thing last year, though. Dark horses Western Kentucky is the second favorite behind Liberty, and that seems a bit crazy considering the amount of turnover in Bowling Green. The Hilltoppers saw 80 total transfers (in and out) take place over the offseason, and they'll have new coordinators on both sides of the ball. Tyson Helton has been steady as she goes for WKU, but he'll need to work some serious magic for this team to win eight-plus games for the fifth year running. There will also be upheaval at Jacksonville State (Rich Rodriguez has departed for West Virginia) and Sam Houston State (K.C. Keeler left for Temple, and defensive coordinator Skyler Cassity took a bunch of his players to North Texas), making them unappealing at their short prices to provide a challenge for Liberty. The case for Louisiana Tech is that there's not much of a difference between the Bulldogs and the teams priced above them, but it's been pretty dire under Sonny Cumbie, and the odds are not enticing enough to bet on a turnaround just because the rest of the conference is wanting. Long shots The path to success for the also-rans in C-USA is that the rest of the conference won't put up that much resistance. That's the starting point, at least. For a team like Middle Tennessee State, it may be enough if Derek Mason gets things moving in Year 2. Getty Images Then there's FIU, which is just hoping Willie Simmons can lead them out of no man's land in his debut season with the Panthers. Kennesaw State returns plenty of its roster, but that may not be a good thing considering how it played in 2024. There is one team, however, that does stand out as a good bet in this range. Betting on College Football? Best bet to win Conference USA UTEP to win Conference USA (14/1, bet365) | UTEP to make the CFB Playoff (300/1, DraftKings) We'll start with UTEP, who profile as a potential bounce-back candidate after a poor but also quite unlucky 3-9 campaign in Scotty Walden's first year in El Paso. Walden tried to accelerate the turnaround by getting aggressive in the transfer portal, notably adding former five-star recruit and USC quarterback Malachi Nelson to his ranks. Nelson immediately becomes one of the most interesting players in the Group of 5. His ceiling is as high as anybody's at this level, but he's not come close to hitting it while at USC and Boise State. If Nelson can click with his new offensive coordinator Mark Cala, the Miners could turn this conference on its head. I think the Miners are absolutely worth a bet to win C-USA at 14/1 odds, and I'd also consider a very small sprinkle on them to make the Playoff at 300/1. Picks up! 2025 preseason predictions for SEC football champion, award winners
College football's premier conference, the start of the 2025 season is now only two weeks away for the SEC. Yes, beginning the weekend of Saturday, Aug. 30, all 16 of the SEC's teams will be in action to kickoff the season, one in which the conference has multiple national championship contenders. Having recently made predictions for the College Football Playoff and Heisman Trophy as well, why not make some preseason picks for the SEC as a whole this year also? A group loaded with multiple ranked teams to begin the year, here are some preseason predictions for the 2025 SEC football season, featuring the conference championship matchup, individual awards, and more. 2025 SEC Championship Game matchup The two teams predicted to make it through the SEC regular season gauntlet to Atlanta to play for a conference championship are Alabama and Texas. However, Georgia, as well as even LSU, could potentially be here also in place of those two, but as for a prediction, I'll go with the Crimson Tide and Longhorns meeting in Atlanta for the first time as SEC foes. 2025 SEC champion As for the eventual SEC champion, I'll go with Texas in that aforementioned matchup in Atlanta. However, should the Crimson Tide and Longhorns meet, that potential matchup should certainly be close. 2025 SEC Offensive Player of the Year The former top recruit takes over as the Longhorns starter this season, leaving many across college football making preseason predictions surrounding just how good Manning could be in 2025 at the helm of Texas' offense. Manning is also garnering preseason buzz surrounding a potential Heisman Trophy caliber season, and I'll say that it does in fact happen for the Texas signal caller this fall, winning SEC Offensive Player of the Year honors along the way. 2025 SEC Defensive Player of the Year A popular pick for SEC Defensive Player of the Year in the preseason is likely Stewart, who enters his sophomore season at South Carolina. As a freshman, Stewart racked up 23 tackles, 11 TFL, and 6.5 sacks a year ago. 2025 SEC Coach of the Year If the Florida Gators take the next step in 2025, Napier might just be the potential favorite for SEC Coach of the Year. Other potential options for this honor could be Auburn's Hugh Freeze and Oklahoma's Brent Venables if those two programs improve in 2025. 2025 SEC Freshman of the Year While numerous potential options to choose from, keep an eye on Athens this fall where Griffin could easily make an immediate impact at defensive tackle. Griffin comes to Athens as a five-star prospect in Georgia's 2025 recruiting class, and was one of the highest-rated players in the nation this past cycle, per 247Sports. 2025 SEC Special Teams Player of the Year While another Georgia special teams starter, punter Brett Thorson, is also an option, I'll go with the Bulldogs to take home this honor via Woodring. The Los Angeles Sparks have started to turn their season around ever since bringing in Julie Vanloo and getting Cameron Brink back from injury, but they still couldn't overcome the defending champs on Tuesday night. Despite a valiant fight at home, the Sparks fell short against the New York Liberty in a very competitive 105-97 loss. Despite the defeat, the Sparks continued to show the positive momentum that they have been displaying of late, especially on the offensive end. Kelsey Plum led the way with 26 points on just 13 shots, and Dearica Hamby added 21 of her own. Hamby also affected the game on the glass, leading the team with eight rebounds. In the process, she passed the legendary Diana Taurasi for 26th on the WNBA all-time rebounding list, according to the team in an announcement on social media. Hamby has been a stellar rebounder all season, coming into the night averaging nearly eight boards a game. She was also the team's second-leading scorer at just under 18 points a night, so she has been one of the engines for Lynne Roberts' club in multiple facets of the game. There is some reason for concern in Los Angeles coming out of this game after Brink tweaked her ankle and missed the entire second half. The second-year standout just recently got back after recovering from a torn ACL that kept her out for more than a calendar year, so any minor setback will be met with a heightened level of concern. Even with Brink out, the depth and variety of scorers that the Sparks have was on display on Tuesday night. In addition to the great showings from Hamby and Plum, Los Angeles got double-figure nights from both Rickea Jackson and Azura Stevens. This loss dropped the Sparks to 15-17 on the season, but they are still 7-3 in their last 10 games and are playing some of their best basketball of the season at this point as the final push gets closer. At the moment, they are just a game behind the Seattle Storm for the eighth and final playoff spot with eight games to go until the playoffs, so urgency will be high. However, if the Sparks can continue to play good basketball and get contributions from Hamby and the rest of the roster, it will be very difficult to keep them out of the postseason.
