Little green man becomes little green woman with soccer ball for Euro 2025 in Switzerland
BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Law-abiding pedestrians wait for the green woman kicking a soccer ball before they cross the road during the Women's European Championship.
Authorities in the Swiss city of Basel have installed 12 of the altered pedestrian crossing lights at locations frequented by soccer fans while the country hosts the nearly month-long tournament.
Some are located near the soccer stadium, others near the train station.
'They will stay until the end of the Women's Euro — maybe even a few days longer,' says Nicole Ryf-Stocker, spokeswoman for Basel's transport department.
Ryf-Stocker said the idea and design was provided by the St. Gallen civil engineering department, while the lights were manufactured by the same company that manufactures Basel's traffic lights.
'We thought the idea was fantastic and were allowed to use it,' she said.
Basel will host the final on July 27 among other games.

Merrill's 2 homers off Wheeler help the Padres beat the Phillies 5-4
Associated Press SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jackson Merrill broke out of a slump with two home runs off All-Star Zack Wheeler, and Manny Machado hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh inning for the San Diego Padres, who won their second straight game against the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-4 on Saturday. Merrill hadn't homered since May 27, a span of 35 games. He hit a two-run, opposite-field shot to left center with one out in the second to tie the game at 2. He appeared relieved and gently pumped his right fist as he rounded first base and then motioned toward the Padres' bullpen. His solo shot to right center with one out in the sixth tied the game at 4. Machado's sac fly off Jordan Romano brought in Fernando Tatis Jr., who had greeted Tanner Banks (2-1) with a one-out single. Wheeler was named to the National League All-Star team but won't pitch because of his start Saturday. He was replaced Friday by San Diego reliever Adrian Morejon. Wheeler allowed four runs and six hits in six innings, struck out six and walked one. It was just the fourth time in 19 starts this season that Wheeler allowed more than two earned runs. Edmundo Sosa hit a go-ahead, two-run single with two outs in the fifth to chase Yu Darvish. It was one inning after Sosa replaced injured third baseman Alec Bohm. Darvish allowed four runs and five hits, struck out two and walked three. He had been sidelined by right elbow inflammation from spring training until making his season debut on Monday night. David Morgan (1-1) pitched one inning for the win and Jeremiah Estrada pitched a perfect ninth for his third save. Key stat Merrill is the third player with multiple homers in a game against Wheeler, joining Buster Posey (April 20, 2021) and Cody Bellinger (June 19, 2017). Key moment Merrill's first homer. Up next Phillies LHP Cristopher Sánchez (7-2, 2.59 ERA) and Padres RHP Nick Pivetta (9-2, 3.07) are scheduled to start the series finale Sunday. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 3

Paul Skenes to start 2nd straight All-Star Game for NL and Tarik Skubal to open for AL
Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) — Pittsburgh's Paul Skenes will start his second straight All-Star Game for the National League and Detroit's Tarik Skubal will open for the American League on Tuesday night at Truist Park. Major League Baseball made the announcement Saturday night. Skenes will become the first pitcher to start consecutive All-Star Games since Washington's Max Scherzer and Boston's Chris Sale in 2017 and '18. Sale started three in a row beginning in 2016. Skenes and Skubal are 1-2 in average four-seam fastball velocity among those with 1,500 or more pitches this season, Skenes at 98.2 mph and Skubal at 97.6 mph, according to MLB Statcast. Skenes worked around Juan Soto's walk in a scoreless first at Arlington, Texas, last year, throwing at up to 100.1 mph. He made the start after just 11 major league appearances, the fewest for an All-Star. Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski, with five appearances, could take over that mark Tuesday if he pitches. Skubal pitched a perfect second inning in his first All-Star appearance last year, following Baltimore's Corbin Burnes to the mound. A 23-year-old right-hander, Skenes is 4-8 despite a major league-best 2.01 ERA for the Pirates, who are last in the NL Central. The 2024 NL Rookie of the Year has 131 strikeouts and 30 walks in 131 innings. Skubal, a 28-year-old left-hander, is the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. He is 10-3 with a 2.23 ERA, striking out 153 and walking 16 in 121 innings. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 3 in this topic

Messi has 5th straight multi-goal game as Miami snaps Nashville's unbeaten streak with 2-1 win
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Lionel Messi extended his historic streak to five straight multi-goal games, and Inter Miami snapped Nashville SC's 15-match unbeaten streak with a 2-1 win on Saturday night. Miami (11-3-5) won its fifth straight match and moved to fifth in the Supporter's Shield standings as it aims to win the title for the second-straight season. Messi entered Saturday's match as the only player in Major League Soccer history with four straight multi-goal games after scoring two in Miami's win over the New England Revolution on Wednesday. And he wasn't done. The 38-year-old opened the scoring Saturday on a free kick in the 17th minute. Then after Nashville tied it early in the second half, Messi put his side back on top with a steal and score in the 62nd. Messi now has 16 goals in 16 MLS matches this season, which is tied with Nashville's Sam Surridge (16 goals in 21 matches) for most in the league. Nashville (12-5-5), which had won five straight entering the match, had jumped to third in the Supporter's Shield Standings during its unbeaten streak that went back to mid-April across all competitions. It was also the longest active streak of its kind in MLS and Nashville's best stretch in its six-season club history. On his first goal, Messi bent a low free kick through Nashville's wall of defenders — a spectacular kick from the nine-time Ballon d'Or winner that gave him 55 goals in 66 Inter Miami matches. Hany Mukhtar scored the equalizer early in the second half. Andy Nájar sent a cross into the box that Mukhtar headed past Oscar Ustari to tie the match in the 49th. Messi then scored with ease after capitalizing on a gaffe by Nashville goalkeeper Joe Willis , who mistakenly made a pass directly to Messi for the go-ahead score. ___ AP soccer:
