EXCLUSIVE Doctors thought I had a brain aneurysm - Ashley Roberts reveals how stress of life in the Pussycat Dolls caused her 'body to shut down'

Daily Mail14-07-2025
Pussycat Dolls singer Ashley Roberts revealed the devastating physical toll the music industry had on her in the latest episode of the Mail's The Life of Bryony podcast.
Ashley, 43, told Mail columnist Bryony Gordon how being forced to give up dancing - and discovering breathwork - pulled her back from the brink of a mental breakdown.
The performer was only 22 years old when she joined the group in 2003, eventually moving to London from Los Angeles after their split in 2010.
Ashley's new book, Breathwork, transforms the hard-won lessons from her difficult past into practical techniques for improving mental and physical health.
'My body was literally shutting down', Ashley told the podcast.
'The Dolls were in London doing a show. I was sat in my hotel room and all of a sudden I had this extreme headache.
'The pain was unreal. I also felt really sick. We were supposed to do a show in Germany the next day, so I called my manager - who told me to go to the hospital.
'The doctors thought I'd had a brain aneurysm. When I went to have an MRI, my knee locked up and that was viral arthritis entering my body.
'My mentality at the time was all about making it to the next show – but that was the moment I remember thinking: what's going on here? I need to take a second because this isn't cool.'
Ashley revealed how the cutthroat music industry had instilled a toxic work ethic that was destroying her health.
'The early 2000s was a whole different era honey', the performer told Bryony.
'No one ever spoke about mental health or the importance of checking in. I am grateful there has been a shift – people cancelling shows now when they need to look after themselves.
'I felt I was weak. It was instilled in us from a young age that we were interchangeable. There was a pressure of like, if you don't show up, who knows what might happen.
'I grew up in the dance world and there is still an attitude of – if you break your toe, you need to keep going. Your mind is programmed to think: the show must go on.
'In the end, I had to take some time off. It was a viral infection with extreme side effects – what was probably a manifestation of being so rundown.'
Following the Pussycat Dolls' split in 2010, Ashley began building her career in the UK, finishing runner-up on I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! in 2012.
After making the move to London permanent, the Heart radio presenter told Bryony how feeling 'spiritually lost' in her new home led her to discover breathwork - her second great love after music.
Breathwork is a practice that uses controlled breathing techniques to reduce stress, improve mental clarity, and promote physical and emotional healing.
'After the Dolls, I stopped dancing completely', Ashley said.
'Being in a pop group for so long, I just shut all that down and wanted to go in a different direction.
'I decided to go to Bali – I went because I knew this life coach who was putting on a retreat out there. I went on my own for 12 days, no cell phones, no technology, I completely disconnected.
'I remember doing my first breathwork class and oh my God, it felt so good. It created this sense of calm that I can't explain.
'I always felt this chaos internally and suddenly, for a few moments, it felt like I wasn't battling it anymore.
'I didn't quite realise how then how great a tool it would be in helping me process life.
'When my dad died, that ability to reflect gave me the motivation to stay strong – and I want to share that.'

Katie Price's ex Kieran issues public apology to Princess saying walking away from family was the ‘hardest thing'

KATIE Price's ex Kieran has issued a heartfelt public apology to their daughter Princess - admitting walking away from the family was the 'hardest thing he's had to do.' Kieran Hayler has publicly apologised to his former stepdaughter Princess Andre after she opened up about her unhappy childhood. 5 5 The 38-year-old personal trainer told the Daily Mail he was deeply saddened by Princess, 18, revealing how tough things got after Katie's marriage to Kieran fell apart following his cheating scandals with multiple women. On her new ITV2 show The Princess Diaries, Princess recalled watching her mum Katie, 47, go through dark times — heartbreak, drug battles, PTSD, and even a suicide attempt — all triggered by the messy split. She said: "He was in our lives for five years, so we got really close to him, obviously we loved him, he did a lot of stuff and when they split up everything went downhill. "My mum was obviously heartbroken, she didn't deal with that the best way, she went through a very, very dark time which was understandable." Now Kieran has admitted he 'regrets' cheating on Katie — with her former best mate Jane Pountney and their ex-nanny Nikki Brown. He revealed it became impossible to shield Junior, 20, and Princess — whose dad is singer Peter Andre — from the fallout. Leaving the family home where he'd lived with the kids for five years was 'one of the hardest things I ever had to do,' he said, adding he's 'deeply sorry' for letting them down. He said: "It makes me feel so sad. I am as sorry as I can be to Princess witnessing us go through such a horrible separation. Leaving them was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. "I would love to apologise and really know how she felt during that time when mine and Kate's marriage broke down." Kieran confessed he's been watching Princess's ITV2 show and wants to reach out. EXC Princess and Junior Andre reveal deal-breaker demand for I'm A Celeb and why they don't care about 'nepo-baby' label He said he thinks he was the "best stepfather that I could have been," but he admits the bonds with his stepchildren have faded over time. He added: "Life moves on and you no longer play a role in their lives anymore." But he saw Princess at a celebrity event in December and said: "We spoke to each other, I gave her a cuddle, and I would be exactly the same with Junior. Nothing ended badly between me and the children." Katie and Kieran tied the knot in January 2013, but their marriage only lasted five turbulent years before their divorce was finalised in March 2021. Katie Price's relationship history We take a look back at the highs and lows of Katie Price's relationship history. 1996-1998: Katie got engaged to Gladiators star Warren Furman - aka Ace - with a £3,000 ring. But their relationship didn't make it as far as 'I do'. 1998-2000: Katie described Dane Bowers as 'the love of her life' but she broke up with the singer when he allegedly cheated on her. 2001: Footballer Dwight Yorke is the father of Katie's eldest child Harvey. He has had very little to do with Harvey throughout his life. 2002: Rebounding from Dwight, Katie famously had one night of passion with Pop Idol star Gareth Gates, allegedly taking his virginity. 2002-2004: Katie was dating Scott Sullivan when she entered the jungle for I'm A Me Out Of Here!. He threatened to "punch Peter's lights out" when chemistry blossomed between her and Peter Andre. 2004-2009: The jungle romance resulted in Katie marrying Aussie pop star Peter. They had two kids, Junior and Princess, before their bitter split in 2009. 2010-2011: Fresh from her break-up with Peter, Katie enjoyed a whirlwind relationship and marriage with cage fighter Alex Reid. They split 20 months after their Las Vegas wedding. 2011: Katie briefly dated model Danny Cipriani... but it ended as quickly as it begun. 2011-2012: They didn't speak the same language, but Katie got engaged to Argentinian model Leandro Penna in 2011. He later fled home to South America. 2012-2018: Wedding bells rang once more after Katie met Kieran Hayler in 2013. They had two kids together, Jett and Bunny, before their break-up and divorce. 2018-2019: Katie moved on quickly with Kris Boyson. They had an on-off romance for one year and even got engaged. They split for good in 2019. 2019: Katie was linked to Charles Drury during her on-off relationship with Kris. Charles, who also dated Lauren Goodger, has always denied being in "official relationship" with her. 2020-2023: Car salesman Carl Woods took a shining to Katie in 2020. Their relationship was up and down for three years. They broke up for a final time last year. 2024-present: After weeks of rumours, Katie confirmed her relationship with Married At First Sight star JJ Slater in February this year. Katie and Kieran met over online chat service Blackberry Messenger in November 2012, and just two months later they tied the knot in the Bahamas, after Kieran proposed on Christmas Day 2012. It was Katie's third marriage, after cage fighter Alex Reid and singer Peter Andre. Kieran cheated on Katie with two of her friends. As well as having an affair with her pal of 20 years, Jane Pountney, Kieran was also seeing her friend Chrissy Thomas, 41. Kieran later admitted that he had 25 secret trysts with Jane over the course of seven months and also confessed to his other affair during a lie detector test. Heartbroken Katie discovered cheating husband Kieran Hayler had sex with their nanny all over the house — even romping in their children's bathroom. The estranged couple were in the process of getting a divorce, and as of 2019 it was finalised. Kieran then started dating Michelle Penticost in 2018, after meeting at the primary school their children attended. Their relationship quickly blossomed and Kieran popped the question in 2020 on a luxury holiday in the Maldives. But they split in February - after seven years together. A representative for Kieran said: "The couple separated on good terms and remain close with their focus first on their son Apollo." Kieran is now attempting to rebuild his life following his divorce and split from Michelle by attending regular therapy sessions. 5 5 5

Real Housewives of London: 'Producers told us to tone down the drama'

The Real Housewives franchise has spread around the world, with viewers lapping up the partying and catfighting of wealthy socialites in locations from Orange County to Sydney to Nairobi. But there hasn't been a series based in London - until now."Go back to Paddington."On its own, it sounds harmless enough, more like directions than an insult. But for Belgravia's gilded set, being told to leave the rarefied streets and return to a supposedly less desirable part of the English capital cuts Amanda Cronin, a former model and now skincare founder, who makes the remark in a clip from The Real Housewives of Cronin and her five co-stars - Juliet Angus, Karen Loderick-Peace, Juliet Mayhew, Panthea Parker, and Nessie Welschinger - it's just one of the many dramatic moments as the international franchise arrives in the in a West End hotel, Cronin laughs about how quickly the insult went viral and stands by the fact that her co-star Angus, an American socialite who also appeared in Ladies of London, should be banished from SW3. Cronin says she "didn't hesitate" when she was asked to be on the show. "It's just a massive opportunity and such a blessing - to be a housewife is huge so I grabbed it and ran with it."Parker, an Iranian-born north London socialite, admits she had her doubts about joining, but didn't want to live with the regret of turning down such a big franchise. And the brand really is huge - there have been 11 US editions and more than 30 international London version's cast claim their exploits put the rest in the shade, with producers cutting the cameras and telling the women to dial down the drama at times. 'Too much drama' Angus says producers of other reality shows often bemoan that everyone is getting on and there isn't enough drama. "But that did not happen once" on this series, she says: "The producers came to my room one day and said 'You're too strong, your blows are too low and there was too much drama'."Parker adds that producers told her they were doing her a favour by cutting out parts of an argument in the first episode."I don't think anyone has seen anything like this before," says Welschinger, an award-winning cake designer whose creations have graced Buckingham Palace. Perhaps the reason for so much friction is the fact that the group of six women weren't friends before the knew of each other, but the links are tenuous - some share a dentist, others mingled in the same circles, while a few attended similar exclusive soirées in the certainly did run high when they came together for the show, and many of the women admit to having regrets about saying certain things, or feel embarrassed about how they acted when the cameras were Loderick-Peace, a Housewives veteran from Jersey UK and Cheshire, says she doesn't dwell on her mistakes."You cannot live your life looking in the rear view mirror, you're going to stress yourself out. You just have to own it and life is about making mistakes, rising up, brushing yourself off and starting all over again."The group grew closer "because we spend so much time together filming", she adds."Filming feels like a year, so you get to know each other on another level. We even got to know each other better than how we know some of our closest friends." Before stepping in front of the cameras, the London housewives sought advice from women who had previously been in their positions. Mayhew, an Australian-born former Miss Galaxy Universe, jokes that Taleen Marie from the Dubai show advised her to take lots of Valium. Welschinger says Lisa Barlow from Salt Lake City told her to "enjoy every second because a lot of women want this but not everyone can get it".Loderick-Peace adds that several existing housewives told her the most important thing was to "just be yourself" - and all the London cast insist they have put their authentic selves on screen."You can't curate a persona because audiences realise that," she explains. Most of the housewives are no strangers to reality TV, and as a result tend to forget the cameras are rolling after a while. But that's not always the case for their families. We meet spouses and children, some of whom are more enthusiastic than others about being tangentially pulled into the Real Housewives vortex."I sat down and discussed the pros and cons with my family, and after three weeks everyone said yes," Parker says. Except one, that is."My eldest son didn't want to be in it at all and I begged him to be on a FaceTime so he did. Then he was regretting it, but I said he was giving himself too much importance and it was probably only going to be two seconds."Cronin and Loderick-Peace's children chose not to appear, but Welschinger says her whole family, particularly her husband, enjoyed the experience."I think it was because the production team made you feel safe and they know what they're doing so you can trust the process." The husbands, usually dressed in suits as they leave for work or take business calls, appear fleetingly in the first some of the housewives, their lifestyle is made entirely possible through the salaries of their whose husband is the former chairman and owner of West Bromwich Albion football club, says that's not the full picture. "Behind every successful man there's a strong woman and men can't do it on their own," she says. Parker reveals her mother-in-law wanted her son to marry a woman who also worked. "My husband said, 'Why would I do that if I have a woman that's going to be making my home amazing, treating me like a king and making sure there's no stress when I come back from work?'" she critics claim the Real Housewives franchise is inherently anti-feminist - an exercise in pitting women against each other for the cast push back on that narrative. As well as the heightened drama we see on screen, the friendships, mentoring and mutual support have emerged, they say, and continued after the cameras stopped Real Housewives of London is available to watch on Hayu from 18 August.
