Singapore to fork out billions for Changi airport upgrades

Yahoo18-02-2025

Singapore will pour an additional $3.7 billion into upgrades at Changi airport, including a long-awaited fifth terminal, as the nation seeks to maintain its position as a top global aviation hub, its leader said Tuesday.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced the fresh infusion while presenting the city-state's 2025 budget, which also included a wide range of cash incentives for locals ahead of elections later this year.
Serving in a dual role as finance minister, Wong said part of the funds will be used to construct a fifth terminal at the airport, which saw around 67.7 million passengers pass through its gates last year.
"When completed, Terminal 5 will expand our airport's capacity by more than 50 percent and will ensure that Singapore remains a critical gateway for global travel and trade," he said.
The fresh top-up of Sg$5 billion (US$3.7 billion) to the Changi Airport Development Fund will "ensure sufficient resources to develop our air hub", added Wong.
Terminal 5 was first proposed in 2013 and construction is expected to go ahead later this year, following pandemic delays, officials said.
The new terminal is expected to be operational in the mid-2030s.
Singapore's Changi has been consistently ranked as among the best airports in the world, but it has faced challenges from other hubs like Doha and Seoul.
It is one of the largest transit hubs in Asia with more than 100 airlines operating from the airport.
The government put Sg$3 billion in its airport development fund in 2015 when it was set up, adding Sg$1 billion in 2016, and Sg$2 billion in 2023, according to local media.
- Budget giveaways -
Also in Tuesday's budget speech, his first as prime minister since taking over in May, Wong unveiled a raft of government handouts, including to help citizens cope with high living costs and upgrade jobs skills.
The giveaways include Sg$800 worth of vouchers for every Singaporean household to be distributed from May -- part of regular state disbursements.
The budget items came ahead of general elections, which must be called before November.
The People's Action Party (PAP), which has ruled Singapore since 1959, is expected to face a tough challenge from a resurgent opposition, building on gains during the last polls in 2020.
The PAP won 83 of the 93 seats at stake in that election, but the opposition Workers' Party surprisingly captured an unprecedented 10 seats.
Wong also said the government will put in an additional Sg$5 billion to a coastal and flood protection fund and another Sg$5 billion to a pool supporting clean energy.
Singapore was also studying the potential of nuclear energy and would "take further steps to systematically build up our capabilities in this area", the prime minister added.

Crude Oil: Uptrend May Extend on Cautious Trade Deal Optimism, Supply Risks

Oil prices rose 5% on hopes of a US-China trade deal boosting demand. Tensions with Iran and weak nuclear talks raise the risk of regional conflict and price spikes. OPEC+ supply shortfalls and falling US inventories point to a possible crude shortage. Looking for actionable trade ideas to navigate the current market volatility? Subscribe here to unlock access to InvestingPro's AI-selected stock winners. Oil prices jumped by as much as 5% yesterday, bringing WTI crude close to $70 per barrel. The main reason for the rise is positive news about a possible trade deal between China and the US, though no final agreement has been reached yet. At the same time, talks with Iran over its nuclear program have not made much progress. If the negotiations fail completely, there is a risk of military conflict, which often pushes oil prices higher. Adding to the upward pressure, US oil inventories fell more than expected for the third month in a row. Looking at the different parts of the ongoing tariff war, the situation with China seems to have the biggest impact on financial markets, including oil. The latest statement says that the deal is almost complete, but both Donald Trump and Xi Jinping still need to sign it. Given how quickly things can change, nothing is certain yet. Still, the market is already hoping for a return to normal trade, especially for semiconductors and rare earth metals, which appear to be the key negotiating points for both countries. A revival in trade and a stable long-term deal would help GDP growth, which would also increase demand for oil. Yesterday's decision to withdraw some staff from the US embassy in Baghdad is a bad sign for the US-Iran talks on stopping Iran's nuclear program in exchange for easing Western sanctions. People involved in the talks say that Iran is demanding more, and although negotiations are still ongoing, the chances of a deal look slim. In the worst case, the US could launch strikes on Iran's nuclear sites. If that happens, Iran may retaliate, and the conflict could spread across the region, pushing oil prices much higher. Last month, OPEC+ announced a production increase of 310,000 barrels per day but managed to raise output by only 180,000 barrels. Key producers, led by Saudi Arabia, were unable to boost production as planned. Combined with falling US oil inventories, this points to a possible, at least short-term, shortage of crude on the global market, especially if trade activity and GDP growth in the US pick up. WTI crude oil has broken through the resistance level around $65 per barrel, opening the way for further gains. The next target for buyers is the supply zone near $72 per barrel, which is where a strong downward move started in early April. Any possible pullbacks are likely to face support near the intersection of the rising trend line and the previously broken resistance, which now acts as support. In a very bullish scenario, if prices break above $72 per barrel, they could even move toward this year's highs just below $80 per barrel. *** Be sure to check out InvestingPro to stay in sync with the market trend and what it means for your trading. Bitcoin price dips as markets cool after US-China tariff talks

Bitcoin's (BTC-USD) rally faltered on Thursday as financial markets dipped, with investors reacting coolly to US-China tariff talks that US president Donald Trump had touted as a significant breakthrough. Bitcoin surged 10% from around $100,000 (£73,826) to $110,000 earlier this week amid optimism surrounding the ongoing trade negotiations. However, the price has since declined by about 2%, to trade at $107,666, mirroring the cautious mood in stock markets after details of the deal emerged. The market initially cheered the news of a rare-earths agreement announced midweek. But the muted response that followed Trump's declaration that the deal was "done" suggested investors weren't convinced of its broader economic impact. Indeed, US stock futures reflected this caution. As of Thursday morning in New York, Dow futures (YM=F) were down 0.29%, S&P 500 futures (ES=F) dropped 0.27%, and Nasdaq futures (NQ=F) slipped by 0.29%. Bitcoin followed suit with most major digital assets mirroring the pattern. Read more: Crypto live prices 'After recovering from the $101,000 level, bitcoin continues its approach towards its all-time high," blockchain analytics firm Glassnode said. "However, under the surface, volatility appears to be brewing across both the on-chain and options market.' Meanwhile, Trump on Wednesday hailed the deal as a triumph. 'We made a great deal with China. We're very happy with it,' Trump told reporters before a performance at Washington's Kennedy Centre on Wednesday evening. 'We have everything we need, and we're going to do very well with it. And hopefully they are too.' The agreement reportedly includes China removing export restrictions on rare earth minerals and the US reopening access for Chinese students to American universities. Trump outlined on Truth Social that the US would apply tariffs totalling 55% on Chinese imports, while China would impose 10% in return. While the White House has emphasised the robustness of the new tariff structure, the finer points of the agreement remain hazy. US Treasury secretary Scott Bessent clarified that the deal did not involve a quid pro quo on US export restrictions of high-end AI chips in exchange for Chinese rare earths, suggesting limitations to the scope of the deal. Coin Bureau founder Nic Puckrin suggested the broader macroeconomic backdrop is more significant for crypto than the trade deal alone. 'Despite all the doom and gloom predictions, we're now nearly halfway through the year and the inflation genie remains contained in its bottle,' Puckrin said. 'Wednesday's CPI report confirms it, [US] inflation isn't as bad as everyone had feared, and risk assets will love this confirmation.' He added that the anticipated effects of US-China trade talks, including softer tariff policies, could help inflation continue to fall throughout the year. 'This is what will push bitcoin into the final leg of its rally for this cycle and, hopefully, finally bring retail investors back into the crypto market,' Puckrin said.
