The Chicago Cubs are in the midst of what has the makings of being a second half collapse for the ages.

ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - AUGUST 9: Drew Pomeranz #45 and Reese McGuire #20 of the Chicago Cubs react after defeating the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium on August 9, 2025 in St Louis, Missouri.Coming out of the All-Star break, Chicago sat 18 games above .500 and increased that margin to as much as 20 games over.
Since reaching a 59-39 mark, the Cubs have lost 11 of their last 19 games and entered Monday trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by six games in the National League Central.
A combination of things has led to what is an ice-cold stretch for Chicago but if there were one issue to focus on more than others, it would be the offense.
Led by Michael Busch, Kyle Tucker, Seiya Suzuki and Pete Crow-Armstrong, the Cubs offense has been one of the best across MLB the entire season.
Tucker and Crow-Armstrong represented the team in the All-Star Game, and arguments could have been made for both Busch and Suzuki to be in the game as well.
Those four have gone cold in August, combining for just two home runs and seven RBI in nine games played.

Combine those struggles with the torrent run the Brewers are on and it makes sense as to why Chicago has fallen six games out of first place.
Crazy stat:
Since May 25, the Cubs have the 2nd-best record in the NL (5th in MLB).
They have lost 12 games in the standings to the #Brewers since that time. — Tim Muma (@TimMumaMKE) August 10, 2025
The Cubs have six games (three versus Toronto, three versus Pittsburgh) this week before welcoming first-place Milwaukee to town for a five-game series beginning next Monday.
The NL Central showdown between the two teams could very much make or break the season for Chicago. It is of utter importance that not only the four players previously mentioned, but the rest of the Cubs lineup get rolling before their biggest series of the season.

Sky's Angel Reese to miss sixth straight game, still doesn't have timeline for return
Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese hasn't played this month, and she still leads the WNBA in total rebounds. Unfortunately for the Sky, Reese doesn't have a timeline for return from the lower back injury that she's been dealing with since late July. "She wants to be out there. She's a competitor, she's fighter, she's a winner," Sky head coach Tyler Marsh told reporters Wednesday. "So it's hard for her not to be out there for her teammates, but we want her to be as healthy as possible when she is ready to come back." Although the Sky have not shut down Reese for the season, she has not been cleared for basketball activities, according to The Chicago Tribune, which reported Wednesday that the team's medical staff advised the two-time All-Star not to travel for last Saturday's road game against the Indiana Fever. Reese participated in this year's All-Star Game, but her back injury surfaced on the team's availability report after she played in Chicago's first game back from the break on July 22. The LSU product missed the next two games before making a one-game return versus the Washington Mystics. She played 32 minutes and pocketed her 17th double-double of the season, recording 22 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. But she posted a field goal percentage below 40% for the first time since June, and the Sky suffered a 17-point loss. Since that July 29 defeat, Reese hasn't seen the court. And the Sky have gone 1-4, slumping to an 8-23 record. Chicago is second-to-last in the WNBA standings, ahead of only the Connecticut Sun. The Sky are just 1-7 without Reese in the lineup this season and 7-16 with her on the floor in 2025. Reese is averaging 14.2 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.7 blocks per game during her sophomore season in the W. She's notably bumped her field goal percentage up to 44.4% — she finished her rookie campaign with a 39.1% clip — and she's demonstrated improved passing and a 3-point shot that remains a work-in-progress but is more capable than before. While the playoffs may not be attainable, the Sky still have an incentive to make a late-season push. After all, the Minnesota Lynx have Chicago's first-round pick in 2026. Getting Reese back would help the Sky try to will their way up the league table, except time's running out. Including Wednesday's game against the Sun, Chicago has only 13 games remaining in a regular season that ends Sept. 11.

Scottie Scheffler explains how he chose his fill-in caddie for Ted Scott for the BMW
Ted Scott has been on Scottie Scheffler's bag for all 17 of his victories since they started working together in late 2021. OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Nathan Hubbard, the brother of veteran pro Mark Hubbard, may have described Scottie Scheffler's dominant stretch this season best in a humorous tweet: 'The only thing beating Scottie Scheffler head-to-head right now is his hairline.' Scheffler has won four times, including two majors, and hasn't finished outside the top 8 in his last 12 starts, the longest stretch of such form since Tom Weiskpof did so more than 50 years ago. But Scheffler will have a new twist to deal with this week as he pursues his fifth victory of the season at the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club. He'll be without caddie Ted Scott, who is dealing with a family matter. Scheffler didn't want to speak about whether Scott might return for next week's Tour Championship but said, 'I think Ted's where he needs to be right now, and I think caddying is probably the last thing on his mind, as it should be.' He added: 'I've been able to talk to him a few times. The family is in good spirits. Everybody seems to be doing well. I'm not going to comment any further on anything going on with his family.' Scheffler had Brad Payne, a Tour chaplain and president of College Golf Fellowship, fill in on the bag on Sunday for the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He shot 67 and finished T-3, one stroke shy of a playoff. 'That was definitely a bit more of a surprise for me and Ted,' Scheffler said of Scott's departure on Saturday evening. 'Brad did a great job stepping in, but Brad is a friend, he's not a professional caddie.' Who will be Scottie Scheffler's caddie at the BMW Championship? Scheffler has elected to use Michael Cromie, an All-SEC golfer at University of Georgia and winner of the 2014 North & South Amateur at Pinehurst, as his caddie this week. Cromie works for his former Georgia teammate Chris Kirk, but was available to step in for Scheffler because Kirk finished 51st in the FedEx Cup standings and failed to qualify for the BMW, an event where only the top 50 advance for the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. 'Mike's a great guy,' Scheffler said on Wednesday during his pre-tournament press conference. 'He's just going to try to fill in as best he can this week. Just asking little stuff. A lot of it is just more routine, like, 'Hey, how do you like me to give you the numbers?' When I say I'm hitting a hold shot, he's like, 'Well, what does that mean?' Just little stuff like that that we're figuring out as the week goes on. I'd say most of it is just little stuff like that. He's like, 'Hey, what's your hydration?' When do you like to eat?' Just little stuff like that. I think there's a lot of little stuff that caddies do that go kind of unnoticed throughout a round, and Michael is doing his best to try and figure those things out. I'm trying to also help remember what those things are as well.' Several caddies reached out to the Scheffler camp offering to help the world No. 1 with Scott on the sidelines but Cromie received the Scott seal of approval. 'Ted's good buddies with him. I always liked him. He's a young guy, works hard,' Scheffler said. 'Chris was very nice to let Cromie come work with me this week. He had a good finish to the season. He was a little bit on the outside looking in, but played really good and was close at the end. It was really nice of him to lend his caddie for the week. That was very kind of him.' Scheffler noted that he had to walk off his numbers on Sunday just to double check what Payne came up with and that having a professional caddie by his side will remove some of the stress for him. 'Doing the numbers myself, it's just a bit more work doing that over a four-day event, and that can take a toll on you. It's nice for me to be able to walk up to the ball, see the shot that I can imagine hitting, and then when the numbers come, we start trying to really dial it in,' he explained. 'I think when you have a professional on the bag, it's a bit different, and Michael is someone -- it's not that I don't trust Brad to do the numbers. It was just something that I think both of us probably thought it was a good idea to be double-checking each other.' Scheffler will be in good hands this week but it still marks a significant change and something worth keeping an eye on in regards to how Scheffler handles being without Scott, who has been on the bag for all 17 of his victories since they started working together in late 2021.

Eagles' Jalen Hurts Opens Up on Long Talk With Shedeur Sanders
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Following a joint practice session between the Cleveland Browns and the Philadelphia Eagles, Jalen Hurts and Shedeur Sanders were the last two players on the field. From a distance, reporters could see the two quarterbacks having a conversation, which was described as lengthy. After they spoke, Hurts gave Sanders a ride back to the locker room. After the conversation, the Eagles' star quarterback addressed reporters and spoke on the young rising star. "I'll keep the conversation intimate," Hurts told reporters. "We had a very lengthy conversation. He came to me and just wanted to talk. I'm always my perspective on what I see and how I've gone about things. Ultimately, it takes a great deal of patience and hard work and a sense of resilience. You've got to want it. You've got to want it. I'm supporting him from where I am and wishing him nothing but the best with his opportunities." Jalen Hurts #1 of the Philadelphia Eagles looks on after the NFL Preseason 2025 game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Lincoln Financial Field on August 7, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Eagles defeated the Bengals 34-27. MoreSanders' path to the NFL is starting off sort of similar to Hurts. He had stints with two different teams in the NCAA, and entered the NFL Draft with a lot of questions regarding his ability to translate to the pros. Hurts' draft stock didn't take a massive hit, as he ended up selected by the Eagles in the second round. As for Sanders, he slid down to the fifth round, which raised a lot of question marks. At the end of the day, Sanders ended up in a situation with the Browns, where he has a chance to play early. A strong preseason could give Cleveland a lot to consider. So far, Sanders is off to a good start. In the team's Week 1 matchup against the Carolina Panthers, Sanders completed 14 of his 23 passes. He racked up 138 yards in the air and threw for two touchdowns. He also rushed four times for 19 yards. While Hurts is still doubted plenty at this stage of his career, his overall success can't be denied. Five years in, he's got two Pro Bowls and one All-Pro honor. The veteran quarterback has led the Eagles to the Super Bowl twice and was the MVP of Super Bowl LIX, when the Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs this past season. With Hurts once being in Sanders' shoes, the Texas-born quarterback was more than willing to give the young rookie some of his time following Wednesday's session.
