Ludhiana: Three arrested with 290 gm heroin, ₹1 lakh drug money recovered
The accused have been identified as Mohammad Gufran, 19, of New Radha Vihar of Bhamian Kalan, Mohammad Shehnawaz Ansari alias Danish Ansari, 20, of Bhamian Kalan and Mohammad Kamil, 43, of Village Jagirpur of Meharban. While Mohammad Gurfam and Mohammad Shehnawaz are natives of Bihar, Mohammad Kamil is from Uttar Pradesh.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) Investigation Amandeep Singh Brar stated that in the first case the crime branch police arrested Mohammad Gurfam and Mohammad Shehnawaz from Sadhu Ground, Bhamian Road following a tip-off. The accused were going to deliver the consignment riding a bike. The police stopped them for checking. When frisked the police recovered 270 gm heroin, ₹1.05 lakh drug money and a bike from their possession.
The ADCP added that an FIR under sections 21, 29, 61 and 85 of NDPS act has been lodged against the accused at Jamalpur Police station. The police are scanning their forward and backward links.
Inspector Beant Juneja, incharge crime branch, stated that Mohammad Gufran works at a salon, while Mohammad Shehnawaz is a daily wager who paints buildings. Mohammad Gufran is facing trial in two cases of assault and setting a bike on fire following a scuffle. The accused was wanted by the police in both cases. Mohammad Shehnawaz Ansari has two cases of assault and snatching lodged against him. He was bailed out on March 28 from the jail.
The inspector added that in the second case the police arrested Mohammad Kamil and recovered 20 gm heroin from his possession. The police arrested the accused from Tibba road following a tip-off. An FIR under sections 21, 29, 61 and 85 of NDPS act has been lodged against the accused at Tibba police station.
18 villages declared drug-free
In a strong push against drug abuse, Punjab cabinet minister Hardeep Singh Mundian on Thursday led the 'Nasha Mukti Yatra' through villages in his Sahnewal constituency, declaring 18 villages as officially drug-free. The campaign saw spirited participation in Tajpur Bet, Khasi Kalan, and Khasi Khurd villages, where residents pledged to support the state's anti-drug mission.
Marking a significant milestone in the government's ongoing war against drugs, the panchayats of these villages took a united stand—resolving not to provide legal guarantees for anyone involved in drug-related crimes. 'This is not just a campaign. It is a people's revolution,' said Mundian, addressing the gatherings.
The Minister highlighted that under the state's 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' initiative, properties of 86 alleged drug peddlers have been razed so far in an effort to dismantle the network from its roots. He said the momentum gained from these public-driven initiatives has injected fresh energy into the state's war against drugs.
'This movement is being powered by the people themselves. Our goal is to reclaim the future of Punjab's youth by freeing every street and every home from the grip of drugs,' Mundian said. He also encouraged people to report drug-related activities using a dedicated and confidential WhatsApp helpline (97791-00200), and assured free treatment at government de-addiction centres for those seeking help.

Notorious drug peddler arrested after two years on the run
The Delhi police have arrested a 58-year-old woman wanted in a case under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), along with multiple other criminal cases, after she remained absconding for over two years, a senior police official said on Friday. The accused, identified as Meeta, a resident of Nand Nagri in north-east Delhi, was booked in 2023 under MCOCA for her involvement in the illegal trade of alcohol and narcotic substances. Since then, she had been evading arrest. 'She is a known bootlegger and drug peddler, with as many as 20 criminal cases against her,' said DCP (Central) Nidhin Valsan, adding that she was a listed history-sheeter at the Nand Nagri police station. The police received a tip-off that the accused would be arriving near a Delhi Milk Scheme (DMS) booth in central Delhi to meet an associate. A trap was laid, and she was apprehended at the spot, the officer said. During interrogation, Meeta revealed that she entered the world of crime at a young age. Her first arrest came in 1985 under the Excise Act. Since then, she has been booked several times, particularly for dealing in narcotic substances such as charas, Mr. Valsan said. Over the years, she and her associates ran a racket in illegal alcohol and drugs, prompting authorities to invoke the stringent MCOCA against her in 2023. Following the registration of the case, Meeta went underground, frequently changing locations to avoid detection, the officer said. Her criminal record spans charges under the NDPS Act, Excise Act, and various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including drug trafficking, bootlegging, assault, obstruction of public servants, and harbouring proclaimed offenders, the officer added.

MDMA worth3.35cr seized in Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer: Police Friday seized MDMA drugs worth approximately Rs 3.35 crore from an SUV near the railway station, making it Jaisalmer's biggest-ever drugs haul. Two people have been arrested in this regard. A search revealed 336.4 grams of MDMA drugs which were intended for sale in Jaisalmer city in small packets. The Gujarat-registered SUV used in the smuggling was also seized. During interrogation, it was found that Prakash was involved in a prior case under the NDPS Act. The police are now questioning both suspects to uncover the roots of this drugs network. This operation is part of a special campaign to curb illegal . The success is considered a major victory for Jaisalmer police in their efforts to control the drugs trade in the district.

Over 26,000 bottles of cough syrup seized, 1 arrested
Cuttack: The special task force (STF) in collaboration with the drugs control department seized 26,658 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup from courier hubs in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. The operation, conducted on Aug 1, led to the arrest of Ansuman Abhijit Sahoo, alias Raja, from Bharatpur in Bhubaneswar. Acting on a tip-off, authorities raided a private firm in Badambadi, Cuttack, and another in Mancheswar, Bhubaneswar. They recovered 13,158 bottles from Cuttack and 13,500 from Bhubaneswar, each containing 100ml of cough syrup. "Total market value of the seized consignment is estimated at Rs 52.78 lakh," said Dharmadev Puhan, assistant drugs controller, Cuttack. Sahoo was apprehended while attempting to receive the consignment. Investigations revealed that he had forged documents of a pharmaceutical company in Cuttack to procure the cough syrup for unauthorised sale. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act, 1985, and Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. Authorities are conducting further investigations to find out if more persons are involved in the operation. The seized cough syrup was manufactured by a company in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh. "We are intensifying surveillance across the state to curb the misuse of pharmaceutical narcotics. More coordinated actions will follow," said DSP (STF), Pradeep Kumar Rout.
