Ludhiana: Three arrested with 290 gm heroin, ₹1 lakh drug money recovered
The crime branch of Ludhiana police commissionerate arrested three accused for drug peddling in two separate cases on Wednesday evening. The police recovered 290 gm heroin and ₹1.05 lakh drug money from their possession.
The accused have been identified as Mohammad Gufran, 19, of New Radha Vihar of Bhamian Kalan, Mohammad Shehnawaz Ansari alias Danish Ansari, 20, of Bhamian Kalan and Mohammad Kamil, 43, of Village Jagirpur of Meharban. While Mohammad Gurfam and Mohammad Shehnawaz are natives of Bihar, Mohammad Kamil is from Uttar Pradesh.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) Investigation Amandeep Singh Brar stated that in the first case the crime branch police arrested Mohammad Gurfam and Mohammad Shehnawaz from Sadhu Ground, Bhamian Road following a tip-off. The accused were going to deliver the consignment riding a bike. The police stopped them for checking. When frisked the police recovered 270 gm heroin, ₹1.05 lakh drug money and a bike from their possession.
The ADCP added that an FIR under sections 21, 29, 61 and 85 of NDPS act has been lodged against the accused at Jamalpur Police station. The police are scanning their forward and backward links.
Inspector Beant Juneja, incharge crime branch, stated that Mohammad Gufran works at a salon, while Mohammad Shehnawaz is a daily wager who paints buildings. Mohammad Gufran is facing trial in two cases of assault and setting a bike on fire following a scuffle. The accused was wanted by the police in both cases. Mohammad Shehnawaz Ansari has two cases of assault and snatching lodged against him. He was bailed out on March 28 from the jail.
The inspector added that in the second case the police arrested Mohammad Kamil and recovered 20 gm heroin from his possession. The police arrested the accused from Tibba road following a tip-off. An FIR under sections 21, 29, 61 and 85 of NDPS act has been lodged against the accused at Tibba police station.

The Minister highlighted that under the state's 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' initiative, properties of 86 alleged drug peddlers have been razed so far in an effort to dismantle the network from its roots. He said the momentum gained from these public-driven initiatives has injected fresh energy into the state's war against drugs.
'This movement is being powered by the people themselves. Our goal is to reclaim the future of Punjab's youth by freeing every street and every home from the grip of drugs,' Mundian said. He also encouraged people to report drug-related activities using a dedicated and confidential WhatsApp helpline (97791-00200), and assured free treatment at government de-addiction centres for those seeking help.

Injured actor Shine Tom Chacko to undergo surgery after father's funeral on Monday
Thrissur: Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko, who was injured when his car crashed with a lorry at Dharmapuri in Tamil Nadu, will need to undergo surgery on his left hand, according to doctors attending on him. Speaking to the media here on Saturday, doctors attached to a private hospital in Thrissur said the surgery will take place anytime after the funeral of Chacko's father on Monday. "The actor and his mother were brought from Dharmapuri late on Friday night. Chacko has left humerus multiple fractures, an issue in the backbone's vertebrae, besides having multiple concussions on his body," said Sujoy, the treating orthopaedic surgeon. "All his vitals are stable, and when we informed him about the need for surgery, he said that since his father also passed away in the car crash, the funeral is fixed for Monday," added Sujoy. "His mother also has injuries. She is also stable. She has suffered hip injuries and a minor head injury. She will need rest," added the surgeon. "Chacko asked us when he can resume shooting, and we told him that he needs rest and rehabilitation for six weeks after surgery. He can resume light shooting activities after six weeks, but for doing fight scenes, he will have to wait for three months," said Sujoy. The accident took place on Friday at 6 a.m., and Chacko's father passed away while he was being taken to the hospital. The car occupants included the actor, his father, mother, brother and driver. The family which left from here in the wee hours on Friday was on its way to Bengaluru for the treatment of the actor, who is presently undergoing de-addiction rehabilitation. The actor was in the news since April after he was arrested after nearly three hours of questioning under Sections 27 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

New Delhi, Jun 7 (PTI) While technology enhances transparency of police investigation and ideally every effort should be made to use such aids, adopting the use of video or audio recording might not be feasible in some cases, the Delhi High Court has said while dismissing the bail plea of an accused in a narcotics case. The petitioner, who was allegedly found to be in possession of 10.860 kg of poppy straw, argued that there was a violation of provisions pertaining to entry, search, seizure and arrest under the NDPS Act. Subsequently, several more sacks of the contraband were allegedly recovered at his instance by the police. His counsel argued that the contraband was recovered in a crowded place but no sincere effort was made to join the public persons or to videograph the search and seizure proceedings conducted at the spot. In the judgement passed on June 5 dismissing the bail plea, Justice Ravinder Dudeja said that although there was admittedly no independent public witness of recovery or any photography/videography, it was at best a 'key irregularity' and there was nothing on record at this stage to suggest that the petitioner was not guilty. 'The use of technology certainly enhances the efficacy and transparency of the police investigation and assures fairness, and therefore, ideally, every effort should be made by the investigating agency to use technological means in aid of investigation. However, there may be situations where audio/video recording may not be feasible like the present case,' said the court. 'The absence of independent witnesses and the videography at best may be regarded as a key irregularity in a search and that would cast an added duty upon the court to scrutinise the evidence regarding the search more carefully,' it added. It noted that in the present case, there was information that contraband was being transported in a vehicle from Alwar, Rajasthan, to Azadpur in Delhi via Punjabi Bagh, and at the time when the petitioner and his co-accused were apprehended, they were shifting the contraband from the car to a motorcycle. The court said the period of the petitioner's custody since August 2023 or that the trial had commenced were by themselves not persuasive grounds for granting relief to the petitioner under the NDPS Act. Ganja seized from woman passenger at Coimbatore airport
Officers of the Air Intelligence Unit and Baggage Officers of Air Customs Unit seized 3.15 kg of ganja (hydroponic weed) from a woman passenger on June 6 at the Coimbatore International Airport. Sources said the passenger, who is aged 22-23 years and is from Idukki in Kerala, was carrying ganja worth more than ₹3 crore in her checked-in baggage. She arrived at the Coimbatore airport from Bangkok via Singapore by flight TR 540 (Scoot flight). Investigation is in progress under the NDPS ACT, 1986, read with the Customs Act, 1962. The operation was carried out by the Air Customs Office at the airport under the leadership of the Deputy Commissioner of Customs, Coimbatore Airport, the sources said on Saturday (June 7, 2025).
