28 Tourists From Kerala Missing After Deadly Cloudburst In Uttarkashi
At least four people were killed and over 100 missing after twin landslides were triggered by a cloudburst in Uttarkashi on Tuesday, prompting rescue operations.
At least 28 tourists from Kerala have gone missing, according to family members, after a massive mudslide struck Dharali village following a cloudburst in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi area on Tuesday, killing four people.
The flash floods, caused by a cloudburst over the Kheer Gad area, sent a massive surge of water and debris through Dharali village and nearby regions. Dharali, a key halt on the route to Gangotri, saw widespread destruction. Several houses, homestays, restaurants, and hotels were either damaged or swept away in the flood.
While 130 people were rescued from the flash floods in Dharali as authorities carried out rescue operations on a war footing, more than 100 people are still missing, including the 28-member group of tourists.
Of these 28 tourists, 20 are reportedly from Kerala settled in Maharashtra, while the remaining eight live in various districts of Kerala, news agency PTI reported, citing a relative of one of the couples in the group.
'They said they were leaving from Uttarkashi to Gangotri at around 8.30 am that day. The landslides occurred along that route. We have been unable to contact them since they left," the relative said, having last contacted them a day ago.
She added that the Haridwar-based travel agency, which arranged the 10-day Uttarakhand tour, was also unable to provide any update on the group's whereabouts. 'Their phones may have run out of battery by now. There is no mobile network in that region currently," she said.
Rescue and relief efforts are ongoing in the area, led by the Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
Rescuers have retrieved two bodies from the rubble in flood-ravaged Dharali village. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met MPs from Uttarakhand at the Parliament House on Wednesday in view of the cloudburst incident.
'We are putting in all efforts to rescue everyone safely," said Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, confirming that damaged roads and a collapsed bridge were making access extremely difficult. 'The Disaster Operations Station in Dehradun is working 24 hours to provide all possible assistance."
