Hyderabad: At least one police personnel was killed, while two others were injured in a blast caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by Maoists near Dondra village of Sukma district in Chhattisgarh on Monday morning.
The incident took place a day ahead of a nationwide bandh called by the Maoists to protest the encounter killing of Communist Party of India (Maoist) general secretary Nambala Kesava Rao in an encounter in Narayanpur district of Chhattisgarh on May 21.
A 42-year-old additional superintendent of police, identified as Akash Rao Giripunje, succumbed to injuries during treatment at a hospital in Konta. Rao was a direct recruit DSP of 2013 batch. He was posted at Konta last year.
Meanwhile, DSP Bhanu Pratap Chandrakar and Inspector Sonhal Gavla – who were injured in the blast – were given first aid before being airlifted for treatment at a hospital in Raipur.
Bastar Range Inspector General of Police Sundarraj P. said that their condition was out of danger.
The incident happened around 10 AM on May 21 when ASP Rao was leading a police party on foot on Konta-Errabor road. The police were on foot patrol after receiving information that the Maoists had burnt an earth mover in the area.
According to Sundarraj, Rao faced the full impact of the explosion as he stepped on the IED pressure bomb.
Another senior police officer said the Maoists have planted IEDs deep inside the surface of several roads passing through forests in Chhattisgarh whereas the detection equipment of police are designed to identify explosives only up to a depth of two feet.
In this case, it was buried more than five feet below, the officer noted.
Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai said in a post on X warned that the 'Naxalites' will have to face its consequences.
'Our security forces have been fighting a big battle against Naxalites in Chhattisgarh and achieving continuous successes in it. Frustrated by this, the Naxalites have carried out such cowardly acts and they will have to face its consequences. The day is not far when their existence will end in Chhattisgarh,' he said.
Sundarraj said any attempt by Maoists to break the morale of the police will fail. 'Our unwavering commitment to root out Maoism has only become stronger after the incident,' he said.

SIB ex-chief: Did political snooping, destroyed hard discs

Hyderabad: In a major development in the high-profile phone tapping case, former chief of Special Intelligence Branch (SIB), T Prabhakar Rao, admitted that a special operations team (SOT) within the SIB was engaged in political surveillance during his tenure. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Rao maintained senior police officials were fully aware of these activities and did not name any political leader as being involved. During a nine-hour-long interrogation on Wednesday, Prabhakar Rao claimed he continued as SIB chief after his retirement in June 2020 only at the insistence of top police officials. He presented a two-page recommendation letter from a senior officer backing his reappointment. Investigators focused on the formation of the SOT in 2018, which Prabhakar Rao confirmed was tasked with political surveillance—far outside SIB's original anti-Naxal mandate. Prabhakar Rao asserted that he acted under the instructions of senior police officials above him in the chain of command. He also admitted that hard disks containing phone tapping data were destroyed in 2023, well before the mandated retention period and just ahead of the Congress coming to power. He remained evasive on whether the decision was made under instructions from higher-ups in the police department, but made no mention of any involvement by the political leadership. The case, registered at Punjagutta police station on March 10, 2024, has raised serious questions about privacy and the alleged misuse of state intelligence for political purposes. Prabhakar Rao had fled to the United States via Chennai shortly after the probe began. However, on June 8, following a Supreme Court order restoring his passport and granting him protection from arrest, he returned to India and appeared before investigators on June 9. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In his latest round of questioning on Wednesday, Rao appeared prepared, with responses closely aligning with earlier court submissions. He remained evasive when asked to name individuals who were under surveillance, often citing lack of memory or knowledge. He said the SOT operated under deputy superintendent of police G Praneeth Rao's supervision and that sensitive data was destroyed before its due date. No electronic devices were seized from him so far, but investigators are considering seeking written responses to clarify further points. Officials plan to question Praneeth Rao again on June 13, while Prabhakar Rao will face another round of questioning on June 14.

Naxalism nears collapse as only 4 Politburo, 18 Central Committee members left

India's decades-long battle against Left-Wing Extremism is entering its final stage, with security agencies confirming a near-complete dismantling of the Communist Party of India (Maoist)'s leadership. According to Bastar IG Sundarraj Pattilingam, only four Politburo members and 18 Central Committee members remain active, most of whom are either in hiding or too old to operate effectively."The Maoist movement is in its final days. Their leadership is disjointed and demoralised. Only 300 armed cadres remain in the Dandakaranya zone who must surrender or prepare for a decisive war," Sundarraj Central Committee, typically the highest decision-making body, has not convened in years due to security pressures. In its absence, the Politburo assumes charge. According to former DGP and naxal expert RK Vij, these bodies once drove strategy through a three-pronged model: the Party, the Army, and the United Front. But that structure is now on the verge of collapse. The four remaining Politburo members include Muppala Lakshmana Rao alias Ganapathi, Thippiri Tirupathi alias Devuji, Mallojula Venugopal alias Sonu, and Misir Besra alias Sunirmal. Eighteen others continue as Central Committee members, including high-profile figures like Madari Hidma, the field commander behind multiple deadly deaths of leaders such as Basavaraju, Bhaskar, and Sudhakar have further dismantled the group's core. 'The ideological vacuum is glaring. Maoist leadership has shifted from revolutionary rhetoric to criminality,' Vij said, noting that only around 20 members remain in the Dandakaranya decline is not just ideological but territorial. Areas like Abujhmaad - once Maoist strongholds - are now seeing roads, mobile towers, and security camps. Villages like Kohkameta and Puvarti are no longer data indicate a massive crackdown between 2023 and May 2025. Over 2,25,000 Maoists were arrested, 4,41,000 surrendered, and nearly 1,19,000 were neutralized. More than 6,699 security personnel were killed, and 1,12,000 injured in over 4,499 encounters. Forces seized 2,200 AK-47 rifles, over 2,21,000 country-made weapons, and dismantled nearly 5,53,000 explosives and 184 major development efforts have also transformed the region. More than 115,000 Maoist camps have been destroyed, 6,66,677 km of roads built, and 1,16,677 villages connected to the mainstream."The fight isn't over until the ideology is rejected in every corner. But this is the closest we've come to ending the insurgency," said Watch

11 years of Modi govt: Infra revolution boosting 'ease of living', says PM

The Union government and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled state governments on Wednesday continued to highlight the achievements of the 11 years of the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) dispensation, with the Prime Minister posting on social media details of the 'infrastructure revolution' during this period. "It's been 11 years of infrastructure revolution with outstanding infrastructure being added that has enhanced India's growth trajectory," Modi said on X. From railways to highways, ports to airports, India's rapidly expanding infrastructure network is boosting 'Ease of Living' and enhancing prosperity, he said. In another post, Modi said: 'India's push for next-gen infrastructure is powered by sustainability and long-term vision.' It is laying the foundations of a self-reliant India, he said. In a document prepared by the newly launched Press Information Bureau (PIB) Research, the government also pointed to the efficacy of the Pragati (pro-active governance and timely implementation) platform, which was put in place 10 years ago, in fast-tracking of infrastructure projects. It said the most recent meeting of Pragati, which the PM chairs, took place on May 29. This was its 47th meeting since its inception in March 2015. The government said since its launch, over 363 projects have been reviewed under the Pragati initiative, which enables the PM to directly engage with the secretaries of the government and chief secretaries of states via videoconferencing. The government also highlighted the external challenges that it has faced — whether in its response to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism with the Uri surgical strike in 2016, the Balakot air strike of 2019, and Operation Sindoor in 2025 — and how it has dealt with challenges of internal security, such as the threat of Naxalism. In Raipur, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the PM's target of uprooting Naxalism by March next year is being fulfilled. In Chhattisgarh, 425 Maoists have been neutralised, 1,443 arrested, 1,388 others have surrendered in the last one-and-a-half years, Sai said. 'Our security forces have broken the backbone of Maoism by neutralising top Naxalites like Basavaraju and Sudhakar,' he said. According to government data, left wing extremism (LWE) districts have reduced from over 100 in 2014 to a mere 18 now. The Opposition Congress on Wednesday said 'anti-people policies' have been the hallmark of the 11 years of the government at the Centre. Congress general secretary and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel pointed to a recent report to accuse the Uttar Pradesh government of concealing the number of people who died during the Kumbh stampede earlier this year, as the numbers were more than what was claimed. He said the number of deaths during the Covid pandemic, recently released data has shown, was much more than what the government had claimed. On govt's agenda: Delimitation, women quota implementation before 2029 LS polls Top government sources on Wednesday said the intent was to complete the process of delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies, as also reserving a third of the Lok Sabha and legislative Assembly seats for women, by the time the 2029 Lok Sabha elections are announced. The delimitation of seats and women's reservation will have to be based on the Census-2027 data, and a delimitation commission will have to be set up for the purpose. The Centre, on June 4, announced that the Census will be completed by March 1, 2027, and include enumeration of castes. However, there has been skepticism whether the data would be available in time for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. The provisional data for the 2011 Census was released on March 31, 2011, 25 days after its population enumeration phase ended, while the final data was released two years later on April 30, 2013. However, the government is hopeful of completing the process of delimitation by the 2029 polls since the Census-2027 will be the first digital Census, where enumerators will enter data into apps that it can process in real-time, facilitating quicker publication of datasets.
