Farooq Abdullah boards Vande Bharat from Srinagar, calls it boon for locals and tourism
Srinagar, June 10 (UNI) Days after the launch of the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah boarded the train from Srinagar, hailing the service and calling it a boon for locals and tourism.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two semi-high-speed trains connecting the Valley with Jammu's Katra town began operations on June 7. Since their inauguration, the trains have gained immense popularity among locals, pilgrims, and tourists, with bookings already at full capacity.
Before boarding the train, Abdullah told reporters that the train service would give a significant boost to tourism and ease travel for residents.
"I am very happy to be travelling on this train to Katra. It is one of the biggest benefits for us,' said the former Chief Minister.
He emphasised that the Vande Bharat service offers a much-needed alternative to the Srinagar-Jammu highway, which is often unreliable due to landslides and weather-related disruptions.
'The road gets closed frequently, and airfares shoot up during such times. This train will save spare people from those difficulties,' he said.
Abdullah also noted that the train service will positively impact the tourism sector and the region's horticulture industry.
Vande Bharat Express trains run between Srinagar and Katra via Banihal six days a week, except Wednesday.

Rijiju says Arunachal to become richest state in coming years
Itanagar, June 10 (UNI) Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday said Arunachal Pradesh is on a fast track to development under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and projected that the state will become the 'richest in the country' within the next seven to eight years if the current momentum is maintained. Addressing a gathering in Itanagar to mark the completion of 11 years of the Modi-led NDA government, the Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs highlighted the transformative changes brought to the frontier state in the last decade and said it was time to accelerate progress. 'We have all the natural resources. We only need to bring the necessary reforms to our society. Under PM Modi and CM Pema Khandu's leadership, we must move even faster. The work done over 11 years will be wasted if we do not continue to win people's trust,' Rijiju said. On the contentious Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), Rijiju reiterated its status as a strategic necessity and a well-thought-out initiative vital for both national security and regional development. 'This is not just a power project; it is essential for managing water resources and countering China's hydropower developments upstream of the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) river,' he stated. 'This project is vital not just for power but also for flood control in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and even Bangladesh,' he said, underlining the broader regional impact. The Union Minister warned of the potential threat posed by Chinese engineering capabilities. 'China can divert rivers and build 1,000-km-long tunnels. That's the level of risk we face,' he cautioned. Addressing the concerns of the indigenous Adi community and residents living in the Siang basin, Rijiju emphasized that their culture, tradition, and agricultural livelihoods will be fully protected. 'The project has to be built, but it must benefit the people in front of it. Their identity should not be harmed in any way,' he said. Rijiju acknowledged the opposition to the project, stressing that the protestors are 'not enemies, but our own people.' He urged dialogue, patience, and empathy. 'They are protesting with emotion. We must talk to each of them, explain properly. It is our responsibility to take them along,' he said. The Union Minister also cautioned against what he called 'external elements' allegedly influencing local sentiments. 'Some are coming from outside and misleading people. They must be checked. We have to address misinformation without confrontation,' he added. Referring to past challenges in securing investment, Rijiju said, 'There was a time we had to beg for investment in hydropower, but under Modi ji, things changed. Now, we are making Arunachal self-reliant and economically strong.' He concluded by calling for collective effort and unity, saying that Arunachal's journey towards becoming a state with the highest per capita income must not be derailed. 'We must work even harder to win the hearts of our people,' he said. The SUMP, with a proposed capacity of 11,000 MW, is being implemented by NHPC and has drawn both support and resistance from local communities over concerns of displacement and environmental impact. Congress 'forfeited the right to criticise' in the court of the people: Sonowal
Shillong, June 10 (UNI) Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal has strongly countered the Congress party's criticism of the Modi government's performance over the past 11 years, asserting that the grand old party has 'forfeited the right to criticise' in the court of the people. Emphasising the transformative progress made under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, Sonowal said the Congress, which neglected the aspirations of the people for more than six decades, now stands exposed before a new India that rewards performance and punishes apathy. 'Congress has lost all moral rights. They had destroyed the prospect of Northeast when they misgoverned the country for more than six decades. The dark days of Congress governments were filled with violence, insurgency, terrorism that dragged our beautiful region in to a vortex of deprivation, devastation, discord and division. Peace was a distant dream,' the Union Minister said. He added : 'This was reversed only with the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who took decisive steps to transform the region, respect the aspirations of the people, find solutions, usher a new era of peace and brotherhood, and ultimately, transform it as the Growth Engine of new India.' Highlighting the major achievements of the Narendra Modi-led government over 11 years, Sonowal explained how it delivered unprecedented welfare benefits to every section of the society — uplifting the poor 'Garib Kalyan', empowering the women 'Nari Shakti', transforming agriculture 'Krishak Kalyan' and empowering the youth through skill based training and employment opportunities though innovative policy action via Start Up India or Digital India campaigns. Sonowal also underlined how more than 2.19 lakh farmers benefitted from the Mission Organic Value Chain Development, 434 Farmer Producer Organisations formed, covering 1.73 lakh hectares. Sonowal said the government is working towards building Viksit Bharat during this Amrit Kala by focussing on 'Seva, Sushasan and Garib Kalyan' (Service, Good Governance and Welfare of the Poor). Over 81 crore people now, he said are receiving free rations under the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, more than 15 crore rural households have access to tap water under 'Har Ghar Jal', and Rs. 3.7 lakh crore has been disbursed to farmers through PM-KISAN Sonowal said women's empowerment has seen historic strides—from 33 per cent reservation in legislatures under the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam to direct benefit transfers for more than 3.9 crore pregnant women, and the historic admission of women into the National Defence Academy,' Stating that the Modi government has brought the Northeast into the mainstream of India's development journey with unprecedented investment and focused attention, the Union Minister said, 'The Northeast has emerged transformative with 'Insurgency has declined by 64 per cent since 2014, AFSPA has been withdrawn from 75 per cent of the region,' The government has approved over 3,600 projects worth Rs. 44,859 crore, built 10 greenfield airports, and expanded connectivity and organic farming through focused missions. 'Under Modi's leadership, the Northeast is being repositioned not as a peripheral zone, but as India's vital Gateway to the East, with peace, progress, and prosperity at its core', Sonowal further said.
