Happy Gilmore III? Hockey brawl breaks out on golf course as Florida Panthers ex-enforcer reverts to form

Independent09-07-2025
Former NHL enforcer Nick Tarnasky was caught on video tossing a man into a pond during a confrontation at an Canada golf course on the Fourth of July.
In a scene that could be straight out of the upcoming 'Happy Gilmore 2' movie, a seemingly intoxicated man in a blue and white polo repeatedly yells at Tarnasky's group to get off the green at Alberta Springs Golf Course in Red Deer around 5:45 p.m.
The man became increasingly aggressive, yelling 'Let's f**king go,' as he clapped his hands and walked toward the Tarnasky, 40, who is wearing a white shirt.
Tarnasky, standing at 6-feet 2-inches and weighing 224 pounds, then pushes the shorter man from the grass into a nearby pond.
'I f***king told you. He just f**king came at me,' an irate Tarnasky screamed.
In a twist that's delighted millions of people on social media, the man emerges from the pond and continues to come at Tarnasky, who proceeds to punch him while making cartoon-like 'bang' sounds.
'Enough! Get him the f**k out of here,' Tarnasky yelled at the end of the video. 'I asked you to f**king get moving. I said 'Stop looking like an idiot.''
Born in Alberta, Tarnasky was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the ninth round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in 2005 and went on to play 245 games over five seasons with the Lightning, Nashville Predators and Florida Panthers.
Tarnasky recorded 22 points and nearly 300 penalty minutes in the NHL, earning a reputation for his physical style of play and willingness to drop the gloves. After leaving the NHL in 2010, he extended his career playing for various minor league teams and briefly suiting up for Vityaz Chekhov in Russia.
Following his retirement from professional hockey in the late 2010s, Tarnasky transitioned into coaching and currently serves as a U17 coach with Red Deer Minor Hockey in Alberta.
A Red Deer Minor Hockey spokesperson told The Independent in a statement, 'We are aware of a video circulating on social media involving a coach with Red Deer Minor Hockey. At this time, given that we understand the matter is being reviewed by local policing authorities and we are conducting our own internal investigation into the alleged incident, we will have no further comments. '
The Independent also contacted representatives for the Alberta Springs Golf Course and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for comment.
Thousands of people reacted to the 'very respectable a**-whooping' on social media.
'When you run into Nick Tarnasky on the golf course in 2055,' one person tweeted alongside a photo of the famous 'Happy Gilmore' scene where Bob Barker beats up Adam Sandler on a golf course.
'Can you imagine running your mouth at the golf course only to get fed by former NHLer Nick Tarnasky?' another user wrote. 'The 'bangs' were straight out of the WWE, and the guy was warned. Mess with the bull, you get the horns! Hockey players are the best.'
A third person suggested, 'If anyone has an old Nick Tarnasky jersey lying around, this would be a great week to dust it off and wear it again.'
'The more I watch this, the funnier it gets,' another person quipped.
Tarnasky has not publicly addressed the altercation.

2025 BMW Championship prediction, best bets & golf odds: Maryland made to measure for McIlroy

Attentions turn to the Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland on Thursday when the BMW Championship gets underway, and Tommy Fleetwood will be hoping he can put the disappointment of last week behind him for the second event in the FedEx Cup play-offs. The world No. 15 went into the final round of the St Jude Championship with a one-stroke lead, but after bogeying the penultimate hole, he finished one behind Justin Rose and JJ Spaun, who went on to play the play-off. Rose was eventually victorious, extending Fleetwood's winless streak on the PGA Tour to 162 events. Could this week finally be the time he breaks his duck? Betting sites rated Fleetwood's chances pretty highly, and the only players with shorter BMW Championship odds are the usual suspects: Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele. BMW Championship Betting Preview: Scheffler to be the pick of the Americans The BMW Championship has only been held at Caves Valley once, and that was back in 2021, when Patrick Cantlay was victorious after beating Bryson DeChambeau in an epic six-hole playoff. The pair both carded second rounds of 60, finished four shots clear of the rest of the chasing pack. You can get 25/1 on golf betting sites on Cantlay winning again, but he's not had the best 2025, failing to win any of his last 17 tournaments and recording just four top 10 finishes. The course should suit Scheffler more than the one at TPC Southwind last week, where he still finished on 15 under in a tie for third. So far this year, the American has finished in the top ten in 14 of the 17 tournaments played and won four of them, including the PGA Championship and The Open. Unsurprisingly, 1/4 is the best price available on betting apps for him to finish in the top 10, but William Hill are offering 6/4 on him finishing as the top-ranked American. Well-rested McIlroy to reap rewards McIlroy opted to miss last week's St Jude Championship, and he will hope that the break will give him the edge over the rest of the field in Maryland. Power and accuracy off the tee could be key at Caves Valley which historically favours big-hitters who can find distance on the fairway and that is a key aspect to McIlroy's game. The Northern Irishman has also been gaining shots on the green this season with his putting helping him hole clutch pars and record low scores at major tournaments. McIlroy also finished fourth here back in 2021 propelled up the leaderboard by an opening-round score of 64, though shooting 70 on the Friday effectively ended his chances at a win. He's 14/1 to make another hot start and lead after the first round, but our preference is on him celebrating his fourth win of the year. Fleetwood to bounce back He might have been disappointed last week, but Fleetwood has had a consistent year so far, missing the cut just once in his 17 tournaments played. He has also finished in the top 10 six times and was runner-up at the Travelers Championship in New England back in June. Ernie Clement's home run helps Blue Jays take opener from Cubs

August 13 - Ernie Clement hit a three-run home run, and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Chicago Cubs 5-1 on Tuesday night. Daulton Varsho added a solo homer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three singles for the Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series which kicks off a six-game homestand. The Cubs fall to 1-3 during their current six-game road trip. Toronto scored once in the first against Javier Assad (0-1), who was making his first start of the season. Bo Bichette, Guerrero, and Alejandro singled in the first against Assad, who had been out all season with a strained left oblique. Toronto had two hits but failed to score in the second. Ty France led off with a double off the right-field wall but was thrown out at home by left fielder Ian Happ when he tried to score on Andres Gimenez's single. Gimenez returned from a sprained ankle on Tuesday. Jose Berrios (9-4) needed 38 pitches to navigate the Cubs' third and left the bases loaded when Carson Kelly took a called third strike. Varsho led off the home fourth with a single, Ty France was hit by a pitch and Clement hit a first-pitch hanger to left for his third homer in as many games and his ninth of the season. Ben Brown replaced Assad, who allowed four runs, eight hits and one walk with two strikeouts in four innings. Berrios was replaced by Mason Fluharty after Kelly's one-out single in the sixth. Fluharty pitched around a wild pitch and a walk to strand two runners. Berrios finished with no runs allowed on two hits and four walks with three strikeouts. The Cubs scored once against Tommy Nance in the seventh. Dansby Swanson walked and pinch-hitter Willi Castro and Michael Busch followed with consecutive singles. Brendon Little replaced Nance with one out. A walk loaded the bases with two out before Pete Crow-Armstrong struck out to end the inning. Toronto's Louis Varland pitched a perfect eighth with two strikeouts. Varsho led off the home eighth with a homer to right against Brown. Jeff Hoffman pitched a perfect ninth for Toronto. -Field Level Media

World No 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler suffers huge blow ahead of PGA Tour playoff event

Scottie Scheffler will be without his caddie Ted Scott when he tees it up at this week's BMW Championship in a huge blow for golf's world No 1. Scott has been a mainstay in Scheffler's professional career for the past four years, but a family emergency last weekend saw him rush back to his home in Louisiana. The change in circumstance led to Scheffler turning to a chaplain and close friend to help him out with the final round of the FedEx St Jude on Sunday, and now it'll be all change again this week. The recent Open champion and four-time major winner will have Mike Cromie on his bag instead, as he continues his foray into the FedEx Cup playoffs. Scott's personal matter has so far not yet been disclosed, but it is expected Scheffler will field questions about his close friend's absence as the week progresses. The world No 1 is due to begin the tournament on Thursday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, where he will be paired with Rory McIlroy for the first round of the penultimate tournament of the season. Cromie has served as the caddie for six-time PGA Tour winner Chris Kirk in the past. Kirk, however, fell short of qualifying for the BMW Championship at 51st in the FedExCup rankings - the top 50 advanced to this week's event. It could turn into a lucrative weekend for the stand-in caddie if Scheffler is in his usual imperious form... form that has earned Scott an eye-watering amount over the past few years. The American's regular wins have even seen Scott earn more than most players on the PGA Tour, as he takes home an estimated 10% of Scheffler's prize money. This season he has already banked $20.36m in tournament prize money, giving Scott just over $2m for himself. On top of that, Scheffler has another $23m in bonus money - but it is unclear how much commission his caddie is on when it comes to that.
