Super Bowl: Philadelphia predictably loses its mind, climbs poles after Eagles' second championship

Philadelphia was never going to win a Super Bowl and relax. Not when there are still poles to climb, to despite strong and recent evidence they probably shouldn't.
Fans swarmed downtown Philly in the wake of the Eagles' dominant 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. They knew they would probably have some celebrating to do when their team took a 24-0 lead into halftime, and the game was all but over by midway through the third quarter.
As fans congregated downtown, it was inevitable people would start climbing light poles, a dangerous thing to do that killed a Temple University student two weeks ago after the Eagles won the NFC championships.

In addition to climbing poles, a group of Philadelphia fans took over a garbage truck.
The streets of downtown Philadelphia after the Eagles won the Super Bowl. Celebratory chaos. Reminder an 18-year-old college student fell off a pole and died after the NFC Championship game. Truly hoping this is safe tonight… pic.twitter.com/mugOClQ3FL

Despite near-freezing temperatures, the crowd on Broad Street was simply massive.

The celebration wasn't limited to Philadelphia either. State College, home of Penn State University, was also having a good time.

As was former Eagles quarterback Koy Detmer, currently working as a high school coach in Texas.

There was, of course, plenty of celebration, and imbibing, in the Eagles locker room as well.
The championship is the second in Eagles franchise history, after their triumph at Super Bowl LII in 2018. A franchise that struggled to get over the hump for decades finished the 2024-25 season looking like an unstoppable machine, led by Super Bowl MVP and Philadelphia's adopted son Jalen Hurts.

New York Giants' Jaxson Dart says Brian Burns opened his eyes to NFL speed

New York Giants' Jaxson Dart says Brian Burns opened his eyes to NFL speed New York Giants first-round pick Jaxson Dart is wasting no time in making his presence known to the local media and the fans. On Friday night, Dart and his fellow Giants rookies took in the Yankees-Boston Red Sox game at Yankee Stadium. He was invited on the air by the Yankees' broadcast team of Michael Kay, David Cone, and Paul O'Neill. Dart explained how he came to be a Yankees fan and even showed a picture of himself as a young boy attending a game in the Bronx in 2008. Dart said he had played baseball as a kid and was on a travel team. He believes he could have been a major league player had he not devoted himself to football. Kay asked him if his No. 2 jersey in college had anything to do with another famous No. 2, Yankees Hall of Fame shortstop, Derek Jeter. "There's some ties to that. Are some ties to that. It's kind of crazy. But yeah, that was my, you know, my favorite athlete growing up," he said. Dart went on to say that the notion of playing in New York did not intimidate him but he did notice that the NFL players are a lot quicker than he has been used to. "Oh, yeah, I had my first, you know, I don't think I've had, like, my full experience of kind of seeing that, but I've had a little experience with Brian Burns chasing me," he said. "He had a read option play and just, you know, his ability to come to come back and chase me down was kind of crazy." Dart, the 25th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft out of Ole Miss, is heading into Giants camp the No. 3 quarterback behind Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston but could end up under center in a game at some point this season. "I think that when you come into a situation like this, first of all, I'm in a super special position to be able to learn from guys like Russ (Wilson), Jameis (Winston), and Tommy (DeVito), guys who have competed at the highest level," Dart said. "Russ winning the Super Bowl, and, you know, to kind of pick their brains each and every day has been awesome for me, especially for how young I am. But I think that my focus right now is to try to develop each and every day and do whatever I can to make the team better, and I just want to win. I can't stand losing, and I'm gonna do whatever it takes, to not let that happen. So whatever my role is, I'm gonna play the best way that I can."

NFL analyst doesn't believe New York Giants will go from worst to first

NFL analyst doesn't believe New York Giants will go from worst to first Almost every season, it seems, an NFL team that finished last the year before wins their division. That team isn't expected to be the New York Giants, who finished 3-14 last season, per the experts at ESPN. The Giants are being given just a 3.3 percent chance of going "worst-to-first" and a 10.1 percent chance of qualifying for the NFC Playoffs. It's a little surprising that FPI doesn't have the Giants lower, as they are currently 27th in the NFL after being 31st before the 2024 season. But their QB room -- with Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston and Jaxson Dart -- should be an improvement over the options they had last season. I also expect them to have a better defense, which had a very poor turnover rate last season and adds edge rusher Abdul Carter to an exciting pass rush. The problem for New York is the schedule, rated as the toughest in the NFL based on both FPI and projected DVOA. That starts with the games in the Giants' own division, which now has a strong Commanders team, along with games against the NFC North and AFC West. Plus, the Giants play the 49ers and Patriots, who are both mentioned above as teams that should be better in 2025. Valid points on all sides, but the truth of the matter is the Giants have had little success against division rivals Philadelphia and Dallas over the past decade. Big Blue has come up small against the Cowboys, losing 15 of the last 16 meetings. Against the Eagles, they've only managed to win three times in 17 tries since 2017, including playoffs. With Philadelphia the reigning Super Bowl champions and Washington making it to the NFC Championship Game last year, the Giants will have a long climb out of the NFC East cellar.

Is ESPN's hypothetical Trey Hendrickson trade feasible for the Lions?

Is ESPN's hypothetical Trey Hendrickson trade feasible for the Lions? Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson continues to be in a contract dispute with the team. Until the issue is resolved, Hendrickson will continue to be the subject of trade speculation. With that speculation, and with the need for extra help on the edge, the Detroit Lions will be linked to any potential trade discussion for Hendrickson. But is a trade actually feasible for the team? Before getting into that, let's discuss the hypothetical trade idea for Hendrickson to the Lions that was proposed by ESPN's Ben Solak this week. Solak proposed Hendrickson and a 2026 fifth-round pick to the Lions for a 2026 second-round pick and a conditional 2027 fourth-round pick that can become a third. Solak wrote: "Lions general manager Brad Holmes has acknowledged the fan base wants a secondary edge rusher far more than he does, but I imagine a player of Hendrickson's caliber would change Holmes' calculus slightly. Hendrickson isn't the sort of run defender the Lions might prioritize, yet a pass-rush duo of Aidan Hutchinson and Hendrickson might be the scariest in the NFL. "The Lions are still legitimate Super Bowl contenders and should behave as such with aggressive veteran trades. They have plenty of cap space to extend Hendrickson, which he would demand of an acquiring team." The Lions currently have $40 million in salary cap space for 2025, but are currently projected to be about $14 million over the cap for 2026, according to Spotrac. That can easily be addressed by restructuring contracts, including that of quarterback Jared Goff, for example. Goff is currently scheduled to make $55 million in base salary. The Lions do have other players set for new contracts coming up and the money will start getting pretty high. Not the least of which is Detroit's leading edge-rusher Aidan Hutchinson. In addition, safety Brian Branch is also due for an extension after this season. Tight end Sam LaPorta will also be coming up. All three have two years left on their rookie contracts -- Hutchinson had his fifth-year option picked up, Branch and LaPorta were not eligible for fifth-year options.
